Hey I have a question about driving a HGV and having diabetes.  I have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and I am wanting to drive a class two HGV when I graduate high school.  I am afraid that I won't be able to if I am taking insulin and stuff.  If I have to tell them that I have it, I am sure I won't get my licence .  Is there any way around it?  I want to drive for a living because my dad and my brothers do it.  It's like a family thing.  I want to be able to drive and relate to them as well.  I will feel like I'm not part of the family if I can't to the same occupation as them.  So does anyone know about the rules on this? I live in the UK so I need to know their rules about it.  I hope to hear from another truck driver.   I need help!  Thank you!

Hello, Guest!  How long have you been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes?  You should know how well-controlled your sugars are if you have had it a long time.  Your doctor will know you well enough to know if you are safe to drive commercially over-the-road.  You can still attain that dream of driving truck if you can show that your blood glucose is under control.  If you do not experience severe hypoglycemic episodes that could compromise the safety of you and other on the road, you should be able to drive truck for companies.  Just have your doctor complete documentation for you and give it to your employer so that you can say that you are safe to drive for them.  I wish you good luck on your endeavor!

Are there any other UK HGV drivers that have diabetes that would like to share their experience with attempting to get your license and work for a trucking company?
