Terrell I started to experience that same, I don't want to call them spasm because they are far beyond spasm. The pain is so excruciating until breaks into dripping sweat and feel faint. My doctor really couldn't pinpoint what was causing it. It wasn't until I went to my fitness coach and found out my water level was too low in my body. It wasn't low enough where I had to be hospitalized but low enough for my muscles was warn me. I was advised to eat more foods that was high in water such as iceberg lettuce ( salad) carrot, cucumbers, celery, squash, pineapples, bell peppers, egg plants. After eating this eat a small bowl of soup which will help build the fluids back into the body. Drinking more water was good, however I was peeing as fast as I was drinking. I was advised that eating foods that was high in water along with drinking build the body back into balance quicker. To start off I blended my carrots, cucumbers, celerys with and apple and a little of cranberry juice and drank a glass everyday along with eating salads and other foods that was high in water for a week. Low and behold I do not have those wicked spasm, deadly cramps anymore. I don't drink my vegetable anymore but I make sure I have a healthy size of vegetable that is high in water everyday. I haven't had one in three months now. Hope this helps

Aha! Others have these excruciating cramps, too! I am 67, just started having these cramps this year. Just in my right inner thigh muscle, (so far.) Paralyzing pain. Any movement, or even a thought about movement, causes the muscles to contract tighter. I have had the spasms awaken me in the middle of the night, or come on suddenly while sitting in a recliner relaxing. A couple of times I managed to get to a standing position, (holding on to furniture with hands and teeth,) I got some minor relief by keeping my right foot planted while shifting the rest of me to the left, thus stretching that inner right thigh muscle. Other times, I just can't move or the pain gets worse because the muscle tightens more. I haven't figured out any "trigger", or I would avoid that trigger like the plague. I do have a labral tear in the cartilage of my right hip socket, and that is causing pain. The cramping of the thigh muscle started as the hip joint pain got worse. There may be a connection between the two. I also have many "lumps" that form under the skin around the thigh muscles. They aren't visible on the surface, but they are usually tender when touched. An ultrasound showed I have over a hundred of these lumps in my right thigh. An MRI showed nothing there, so the radiologist and my doctor think they are fatty tissue lumps. The lumps happen to be around and over the muscles that cramp so badly. I had a bad bout of spasming last night. I had spent several hours during the day standing and walking on a concrete floor. Perhaps one of those things to avoid? Thanks for all the information, and reassurance that I am not alone in looking for answers.

You might try Oyster Calcium 1000mg twice a day with food. It doesn't work over night, just give it sometime. I've been taking this for many years and I vary rarely get inner thigh cramps as I use to get them often before taking the Oyster Calcium. When they happened the pain was excruciating.

I too am suffering from the inner thigh spasms, having been woken up this morning at 5:00 AM!!! I also have spinal stenosis with bulging discs...wonder if this is what actually is causing my misery!! Believe me, I know EXACTLY how everyone on here feel...WORST PAIN IN MY LIFE!!!! Feels just like something is twisting my thigh! It even becomes rigid, almost as if it is paralyzed. No doctor has ever given me an answer as to why this happens. After the episode, my muscle twitches, and I can tell if I move a certain way, it will hit again. Also, my muscle becomes very sore. I have the same issue with my abdominal muscles and muscles around ribcage. The only thing I can do at that moment when it hits, is use a heating pad and pray I will pass out! I also do get up and try to walk it out...stepping onto a ice cold surface sometimes actually helps...I think it shocks the muscle. I have an Rx for a muscle relaxer, but cannot take it during the day because it knocks me for a loop!!

I, too, get these awful spasms that occur in both legs, inner thighs and all the way down to my feet.  I am 46, teach Zumba and Zumba Step, and although my life has been a generally active one, I have begun getting these excruciating cramps that bring me to tears only in the last year. Prior to this year, the cramps were only in the calves and/or feet. (Like Teree said, those are a piece of cake.)  After searching the web for answers, I'm glad to see that there are others with the same experience, but saddened to find no real cause or cure.  While I have tried many of the recommended methods of relief (other than medications), I am curious about mustard, and am planning to send my husband to the refrigerator upon the next debilitating spasm.  Thanks for the suggestions!

I am a 59 year old female and had a episode last night, it lasted 8 minutes. I get these about every 6 weeks and can't attribute them to any one thing. Last night I got an inner thigh spasm in BOTH legs, the pain being so severe I vomited. This past summer I went to the ER thinking it was a blood clot. My bloodwork showed fine, doctors said it was dehydration. I drink a lot of water all day long mainly because I have a history of kidney stones, so I don't believe it was dehydration. The way I get through these episode is by pressing very hard on the thigh muscle with my hands to try and stop the muscle from gnarling. For a few days after my muscles are sore. I am at a lose and have discussed this with my doctors, all have said the same drink water and stretch before exercising! I know this is not the solution. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I feel your pain - a very similar one. I get excruciating pain on my inner thighs. It feels like a ball where the pain originates and then it radiates out like it is going through every nerve and neuron in the thigh. I also get cramps in my feet where my toe will get stuck sticking straight up in the air, and I cannot get it down. Finally I get the same type of radiating cramping up the front of my leg from ankle to hip. I can take a lot of pain, but these are so painful I am always afraid I will pass out. With a charlie horse, you can usually walk it off. With these, pressure on my feet makes it worse. I drink water the entire time I have the cramp, and have to put all my weight off that leg - so I lean on a counter and really pray until it goes away. Last night I had one in both legs simultaneously. I was sitting on the edge of a chair and could not move to stand or anything because of the pain. About 10 minutes later they subsided and I was able to move around. I wish I knew what caused them. I take a supplement Standard Process Cataplex F and it appears to help.... but nothing is consistent. I cannot anticipate them. Any idea of causes would be great.

Ditto on everbody's pain descriptions. The shot of mustard or gulp of pickle juice supposedly trips a nerve in the throat according to some research. The other night my husband gave me pickle juice after I'd been yelling and staggering around for several minutes. Don't know if it was coincidence, but things improved within a minute. I had spent the day walking around in rubber Crocs doing yard work. From now on, I'm sticking to my high-arch Birkenstocks for all-day outside work just in case that shift in angle was a trigger. I will add magnesium, too.

I know exactly what you are talking about and if I can get to the shower, sometimes I can't I can get the hottest water on it and it sometimes will release. I've had them so bad that the next day I would be sore. No hard core drugs but it would be nice to find a relief.

same symptoms of extreme spasm in the middle of sleep - in the inner thigh from groin to knee - excruciating pain - cannot stand up, stretch, sit - I have herniated and bulging disks at L4/L5, C1-C3, osteoarthritis, hashimoto's thyroiditis - take Juice Plus tabs daily, so surprised to be hit with spasms again after over a year of no spasms - currently gluten-free and sugar avoidant. HOWEVER, I ate a big bowlful of my son's Captain Crunch this afternoon about 3 hours before sever cramping. Big sugar overload after being sugar-avoidant for so long - letting myself have a break for the Thanksgiving holiday tomorrow - bad decision.

Looked at the Stop Cramps product mentioned in previous posts. Trim Healthy Mama has a similar drink you can make yourself right now at home - I'm going to go make some and see if I can turn this around. It's called "Good Girl Moonshine" - I make it in a quart size Mason jar:

2-3 Tablespoons cold-pressed apple cider vinegar (with the mother)

1-2 tsp ground ginger (I just sprinkle it in there - more or less)

Stevia to taste

put ingredients in quart jar and fill with ice and water

If the Amish Stop Cramps works, then this concoction should also work - same ingredients. Good Luck, all.

I have these also. I can't call them a cramp. Any cramp anywhere is easy to get rid of. I would rather have 10 babies than one of these. I'm immobile when they happen. I have to depend on my husband to fetch me an ice pack or a pillow. I get on the floor, because I feel nauseated as if I'm going to faint. He stands there helpless. Later after one subsides, I am afraid to fall asleep for a while because I'm afraid I will awaken with another one. I have told him, at the point of the pain, I would like to die. (That's not drama either.) I feel hopeless when some one says, "Oh, yeah, I get muscle cramps all the time." They're not talking about what I go through. Once I had one that come and went for 5 hours! I would squirm on the floor, trying to get into a position to relieve myself of the pain. Many times it happens in both thighs and I can't straighten either one.

I know your pain. I am a 47 year old, Hispanic male with diabetes. I have awaken to these almost - seemingly deathly pains. It has me screaming and begging God for mercy. I try to stretch it out but it wont. I try to walk it out and it won't. Exactly what you said. A few years ago, at my mother's funeral, I discovered she was "prescribed" potassium. My sibling also takes Klor-con. A large number of my siblings-nephews and nieces crave tomatoes. I concluded that I also must be suffering from these electrolyte imbalance. I have been taking for the last three months, daily - calcium, magnesium, and I use the salt substitute Potassium Chloride. I also make sure I drink a bottle of water before I go to bed. I had only 1 episode of that terrible cramp at night an I contributed that to forgetting to take my insulin before I went to bed and it dehydrated me over night.

ps: don't you just hate it when - in the center of your legs, just above the knee, you start to feel a "twitch" and you pray to God "oh, no, please don't" ... you know it's coming and you pray it goes away...

Hi All,

Something I've found helpful in avoiding inner thigh cramps is keeping your electrolytes replished (drinking some ORS solution), keeping your legs warm, by wearing some inner wear warmer, and lastly moderate exercise to strengthen and stretch these muscles.

It happens to me too. Nothing can be done. They are worst than labor.
