Iam 74 and have had these severe and debiliting inner thigh spasams for about a year now. I say spasams rather than cramps as I can feel the muscle begin to contract from the bottom and it is like a wave as it continues up the inner thigh muscle, pulling the muscle down. I liken them to birthing contractions. In the beginning of having these I was hating to go to bed for fear they would wake me up with the horrible contractions.  I was beginning to think of my bed as a torture chamber.  I started documenting the spasams to see if I was doing something different or eating something differntly.  I am prediabetic and very flat footed.  At first I thought it was the strain of the muscle from being flat footed and walking a lot.  After documeting, it seems to happen when I have an overload of carbs or over stress of muscle.  I have tried drinking more ater and I do take a combo of Magnesium/zinc/calcium, but neither seems to help. The best way I have found for me is to treat them like birthing contractions and try to do semi-Lamaze thing by relaxing the rest of my body and lying very still with the weight of my other theigh on top of the one that has the spasam.  These spasams can last anywhere from 10-15, very long and excruciating minutes.  They mostly happen at night, but have occasionally happened during the day when getting out of a recliner chair.  I've had them often enough now that I can notice a twinge of the muscle and I will try to stay very still for a few minutes or slowly change my position and it will slowly go away or not be quite so severe.

I told my doctor about them and she told me to drink more water.  The water did not work for me.  Who ever comes up with the cure for these horrible muscle cramps/spasams will make a mint.

I feel your pain man. I've been getting them for over 10 years. I have passed out from the pain, but have learned to breathe and how to cope a lot better. I tried magnesium, potasium, calcium supplements, eating bananas every day, drink over a gallon of water/gatorade, centrum complete pills, salt on every thing I eat...nothing helps. I have found pickle juice works at getting rid of the cramp almost immediately and stops it from happening if I catch it early enought. My leg will still be tight, as if it wants to lock up on me, but it won't with pickle juice. I worked construction in south florida and some old timers taught me about that trick. I read about it, there is science behind it. It's not the sodium but a chemical reaction the bitterness causes within the body that instantly relieves cramps. Hope this helps...tho it would be nice to know why we get these...

I live in south florida, always played sports, worked construction, and am very athletic, lift weights, jogging, working in the yard for hours in the florida sun. I know cramps and dehydration. I didn't start getting these till my late 20s tho...and have never felt pain like these cramps. I get them mostly in my right inner thigh, at night, usually while sleeping. I've tried magnesium, potasium, calcium supplements, centrum complete, drinking over a gallon of water/gatorade a day, eating 2-3 bananas a day, putting salt on everything I eat. Nothing stopped them from happening. I'm in my 40s now, not nearly as physical as I use to be and they still happen regularly...no clue I have learned to recognize the signs that ones coming tho. The tightness, certain movements you feel it in the thigh more then normal. If I cramp anywhere elsr I KNOW it will hit my thigh at the end of the night as I lay back. Pickle juice works ! Take it at the end of the day or at the 1st signs n it won't lock up at night. It will be alil stiff n sore, but it will hold the cramp at bay. If you cramp up pickle juice will relieve it in minutes. It's nasty but it works very well. I read up on it too, there is a science behind it. It's not the sodium but a chemical reaction within the body caused by the bitterness that relieve cramps 10-40% quicker then water or sports drinks. There is an amish stuff that is all natural for foot n leg cramps that supposedly works great and it's major ingredient is apple cider vinegar...? The pain is so intense I have actually passed out for not breathing while having an 'episode' and have learned to NOT MOVE, lay or stand as still as possible, and breathe. Hope this helps

Yep-I have them now too.  63 year old female.  I do have a slightly herniated disc L3 or L4 and some stenosis and degeneration.  Right side woke me at 2:00 am this morning and this time I timed it - 8 minutes.  It is truly horrible.  I can't put my leg down when I happens.  There is no position that helps.

I'm headed to pain management in a couple of weeks because something has to be done.  Will post if I find any relief.

Just like everyone else, I am so glad I am not alone.  I'm 58. I have arthritis, fibro, neuropathy.  I have these spasms/cramps multiple times a week and always on the inner thighs. Nothing I do will stop them. Mine are worse than any charlie horse anyone could ever describe. It also feels like hot, searing knives slitting up and down the thigh as the cramps continue. It's horibble and I plead for god to take them away. I plead to just pass out. I'm always alone because I sleep in my own bedroom. My husband doesn't understand and everyone just gives me advice for charlie horses.

I've stopped asking doctors because they just give me a puzzled look. The neurologist found mononeuropathy multiplex.  ? Not sure if that is part of it.

Recently I have gotten what seems like a smaller version of this on the back of my legs. Scared the heck out of me. It wasn't anywhere as bad but it was awful.

I don't know what to do. I will follow this conversation in the hopes that someone finds an answer.

As crazy as this may sound, put a sock on your foot and put a quarter in it.  Try to walk and I promise in less than a minute, the cramp/charlie horse will go away.  Not sure why the quarter works, but it works!

I get real bad inner thigh cramps that are so painful that I literally feel like I am ripping the muscle trying to  stand up and stretch it.  Quarters do work.  My co-worker told me her husband use them for his cramps in his feet so I tried putting on socks with quarters in them and the killer thigh cramp went away in about a minute.  Almost instant relief but what do you use to get rid of the soreness the next day?

try putting on a sock with a quarter in it. My thigh cramps use to be so bad that it felt like my muscles were ripping when I tried to straighten up. I now sleep with socks on with a quarter in each sock and I haven't had a cramp in quite some time until the other night when I forgot to put quarters in my footies. Oh my gosh and now I have the worst soreness in my inner thigh..

I to have had spasms in both thighs at the same time. The pain is awful. I'm glad I found this site I have had back problems and now will be getting checked for bulging disc. I thought the cramping was because I'm in my third trimester but reading all the comments I'm starting to think differently..

I totally agree with your statement as to why we cannot find a reason or stop these Have suffered for ten years since a total hip replacement Never will understand how bad this spasm can hurt Even after it leaves you are afraid that it might come back. I asked my doctor why they could not give you an injector or muscle relaxers so that it would help and he laughed and said they have not gotten that on the market yet. Too bad so sad it is plain stupid to make people suffer when they might be able to stop this spasm before your eyes roll to the back of your head with suffering. My husband supports me but gets angry that there is nothing to offer from the medical field. Hopefully someday they will find something that can stop these.

Has anyone tried a deep tissue massage around the area to possibly relieve any pinched nerves or tight muscles?

Born in 1948, male,1st cramp (in diaphragm) at 9 yrs, continued till about 25yrs, mechanic work started at 17 yrs and cramps moved to legs, now 67 yrs cramps in feet legs and occasionally in neck pectorals and lots of shimmering/flicking almost anywhere. Only wholesome non-processed ocean or Himalayan salt by the 1 teaspoonful stops my cramps whether I can stretch them out first or not...and it only takes about 5 minutes for complete relief. Sometimes in summer they'll come back, and I need to take a 2nd dose of fresh ground salt with a large glass of filtered water. I carry ground salt in my pocket whenever I go out for emergencies. I had an acute 10 hr heart attack in 2008 (felt like a cramp in my heart muscle) which came on hours after exercise and mowing. My arteries had only minor plaque except at the T junction on front of heart which they fixed with 2 stents. The doctors kept complaining that the heart attack should not have occurred due to my good state of health. The echogram after the heart attack showed no damage, but the doctors kept that knowledge from me and insisted that part of my heart had died. They put me on a drug regime that I took for 1-2 yrs that nearly killed me, forcing me to abandon doctors and drugs, and has taken 5 yrs since to feel like most of the side affects are gone (I hope). Before the attack I was feeling angina occasionally but didn't know what it was. After the drugs episode, I took 4 per day (2x2, empty stomach 2 hrs before meals) capsules EDTA (calcium disodium) 500mg + malic acid 500mg + deodorized garlic 200mg + parsley leaf powder 50mg TO CLEAR MY ARTERIES of any unwanted calcium debris/plaque or heavy metals accumulation. Because oral chelation also removes some good minerals, you must supplement at meal times. I believe "wholesome" salt is a valuable key because it contains vast array of minerals and trace elements depending on where it was mined/extracted, if it hasn't been interfered with by manufacturers or government. Growing healthy food and supplying safe wholesome water has been severely interfered with by governments, agriculture companies and farmers, industrial chemists, pharmaceutical interests, university studies and experiments, transportation and times, political manipulations, etc., etc. We need to be consuming only the most wholesome food, water, exercise and sleep, and information about health and wellbeing .Most everyone out there has their own agendas (mostly your best health isn't their main priority) YOU MUST BE YOUR OWN DOCTOR OR AT LEAST SUPERVISE YOUR DOCTORING. Is salt safe to consume?? The Bible talks of it in an amazingly good light, unless it has lost its flavour (been interfered with!) It should not contain aluminium anything or have had its best mineral parts removed for otherwise sales. So safe salt is good for you and you will die without it...ask the heart foundation about that!!! EDTA is good for you with breaks to allow your body to accumulate minerals. So clear your arteries and save your life for every second month and reap the rewards of good blood flow and pliable arteries. Chemical drug bandaids can only be temporary. "There is nothing new under the sun" according to the Bible, so your cure is out there somewhere...or in church. Do your research until you find what works for you. Don't be someone else's guinea pig. And don't put your trust in medical professionals who think they know everything or wan't you to think that. Weigh up all the opportunities to experiment on YOUR body before agreeing to anything and perhaps ending up worse than before....signed Dennis McDonnell

hi,you are not alone,my husband gets the same spasms in his upper inner thigh close to his groin area,my husband never cries out when he is hurting, never, ive been with him for almost 25 years, well last night i woke up to him sitting in his chair with a look on his face i will never forget,he was crushed under his truck and was hurt severely but not once cried out in pain,he had a smashed collarbone 2 broken ribs ,fractured wrist, all that,he still didnt have the pain he was feeling when this happens to him,so i understand what you are going thru,i didnt know that if i looked it up like im doing now, that i would find no remedy, this is scarey, because im thinking a blood clot,i always think the worst, your not going to believe this but my husband also sleeps in a recliner because of this happening to him,it started in our bed,and he has never slept back in it again, well we started noticing a pattern,he is a very hard worker, like a dummy that he is,he never asks ffor help at work, even though he has 4 guys working for him and with him, last 2 times we realised that it might be from picking up very heavy objects, time before this last one,he picked up 2 5 gal paints and walked up 2 flights of long stairs, this time he was carrying shingles,so i know it has something to do with heavy lifting and stuff like that, ask yourself, wereyou doing anything differant during that day of your episode, please let me know if you figure out what to do to try and stop this from happening,he is almost 50 yrs old, almost same age as you...thanks for telling us your story and good luck
