Mine were after I rode my bike. I added some magnesium to my diet and kept on biking. It helped a lot. I haven't had one for quite a while. But I am sure to keep hydrated too.

After a major episode which brought me to the ER my doctor did reduced my dosage on HGTC. Even after the dosage change I still had more episodes of spasms.

Have you tried the dill pickle juice?
I believe the magnesium worked for me because I also take Prilosec and it sometimes depletes the mag so a bit extra and they stopped. But man o man do they hurt. I hope you find something that works for you. I also tried Gatorade but they make better electrolyte solutions than that. Perhaps that will help? It's such a balancing act.

Thanks Marci I did have my magnesium level checked and it was fine. I will try an electrolyte drink.

Heck, last night I had one. I traced it back to instead of the herbal tea or water I drink after exercise I had a glass of wine. Sigh I hobbled to the fridge and downed some pickle juice and it got rid of it but dang I wish I didn't get them. And I need to buy more pickles. Or maybe just make my juice.

OMG!!!!! I thought I was alllll alone. I would have the deathly spasms from Hell too. I start having them when I turned 57. These spasms was so horrific to the point I would get nausea and I would feel faint. My clothes would be soaking wet perspiration. these spasms were debilitating. I too went to the doctor and had a battery of test. Nothing!!!
I decided to go to my general practitioner. Once they got my blood work back, the lab tech told me that I was dehydrated but not enough to be hospitalized. Advised me to eat more vegetables and fruits that were high in water. Lettuce, tomatoes, melon ,celery, spinach , grapes, berries, carrots, cucumber, and that's what I did. I mix several fruits and vegetables and blended them. I drank a glass everyday for lunch and ate bowl of soup behind it. I was told the soup was to hold the water in your body. Guess what ?? I have a spasms from HELL in over a year

I have this exact thing. I have the same sensation that wakes me up at night and I can tell Im about to have a spasm. I think the doctors think I cant take a little leg cramp. These spasms are about 20 times as bad as a typical leg cramp and the more I try to move or stretch to get rid of them the worse it gets. Ive tried everything including the electrical muscle stimulator and nothing works. The only thing that will relieve it is taking 4 Motrin. It takes several minutes to take hold so I suffer until it starts working. I did give up diet coke and all aspartame products and that reduced the pain to about half and Im only having the leg spasms once every few months. Before I was having them four to six times a week.

As crazy as this may sound put a sock on and put a quarter in it. It actually removes the Charlie horse within 5 to 10 minutes. I use to get the same cramp in my right inner thigh and it is hard to straighten up. It feels like the muscle is ripping. No doctor had an explanation to why this happens.

I also started drinking half bottle of Gatorade before I go to sleep. Since I started drinking the Gatorade and sleeping with a quarter in my footie, I haven't had one of these in about 4 months. Good Luck... I feel your pain.

I'm sorry but you should seek help with a top neurologist. Many conditions including MS higher occurrences are now being seen in Veterans and I suffer these in both feet, toes, ankles, legs and rib cage. I'm here just after screaming and crying through what looks like the exorcism is inside my leg all you can do id watch in horror and these come frequently then go away. The worst event was five locations at once and I'm one tough gal but those times you ask God to take you home.

Beyond ms there's MCTD multiple connective tissue disease and mg myasthinias gravis and many others to rule out including brain studies.

Lupus can do this and you can look perfectly normal like I do my malar rash is more like I overdosed on blush under my freckles.

I'm a spine patient too.

I did see your med list includes three I found listed to cause such cramps but I say get a savvy top neurologist. Mine's taken thirteen vials of blood to reveal many autoantibodies therefore onto top rheumatologist and neurologist isn't just dropping off my case. I've suffered 17 long years weird anomalies began age 20 finally get to the answers and I am a licensed massage therapist and do not touch these spasms they only get worse...you can only wait until they stop.

I'm also a single working mom working in real estate and in fear of the public occurrences I know I'm not in a bubble therefore can occur and it is terrifying. One recent trip to Nordstrom and I diligently made it through the toes bending apart and some up some down either leg....I made it without it climbing up my foot rounding my ankle then into side of shin by God's grace...

ALS also produces cramps like these so don't mess around with bananas....my blood potassium levels are fine.

Your red flag word is swallowing difficulty and weight loss....how are your eyes....those are first symptoms of mg....you can tell my journey has nearly led me back to medical school due to how many docs think we're all just waiting for the next comet to ride....P.S. You can graduate barely passing so study your M.D. You want that top education for real answers there's a reason why prestigious schools exist......

P.S. No one will be able to relate to this pain if they haven't had it so hang in there with me and get to the best neurologist you can. I'm in San Antonio with awesome practitioners finally...

Warm Regards,
TLW

I have just found this discussion group - even though no one has posted for a year. What a relief to read the posts. Honestly when I get them they are so painful I hyperventilate. They seem to attack when I have done too much walking, work out at the gym.

I always have that kind of cramps to the point of passing out because of unbearable pain. I don't know who will be able to help, last night I had cramps that my children almost called 911, I was sweating like hell with chest pain, I am looking for help. I go for massage 2x a month so I am not sure if massage would help.

The only thing which helps these so painful inner thigh muscle cramps where you feel the flesh is being torn away from the bone is to note that they arrive when you, half asleep, stretch your legs straight in bed. You must get out of bed fast when you recognise that first cramp starting, the faster you can do it the shorter the terrible experience. Stand up and keep your weight on the painful leg and start trying to walk as soon as the pain will allow, it hurts but when you walk it will soon calm down. It can be very painful just where the cramp cite is for weeks afterwards. It is so bad sometimes, I am afraid to fall asleep, but this weight on leg then walking is the only thing I find that helps.
