Hi Always,

Yes, you can pass out due to a vasovagal response.  When it happens, your blood pressure drops enough that you lose consciousness.

The question is, what caused it?  I'm assuming she's had orange soda in the past and it hasn't happened?

Sometimes it can happen just after eating or swallowing.  It can also just "happen" for no apparent reason.

As long as they're ruled out other causes, cardiac for example, it's likely the correct diagnosis.

Wish I had a better answer for you.

The only other thing I could attribute this to is a brain tumor, but that still isn't anywhere close to that. Your doctor was probably right; it was probably a vagovagal reflex.
