Welcome to the torture chamber! First off, i am a healthy 44 and have no other health issues. It all started with a lower back ache. Being the typical procrastinating and complaining male, i would tell my wife that i needed  to see a chiropractor. This went on for 3 weeks. I was working out of town (Las Vegas) and had gone out with "the boys" one night and over endulged on the libations. The next morning i found myself peeing blood! Taking a quick poll with my co-workers, i was self diagnosed with a bladder infection. The cure was to drink plenty of water and see the doctor when i got home. The bleeding backed off or just got diluted but the sore back was ever present. Two days later, at home now, i was climbing into bed when it hit. A sharp agonizing pain from my left kidney that had me toggled in my tracks. I knew there was something terribly wrong and had my wife drag my ass to the ER. We had NO idea what was happening and never even considered it being a stone. The CT scan at the ER confirmed it was a 5mm stone. They gave me some hydrocodon and a strainer and sent me on my way. The next morning...round two! This pain was just as severe and caught me off guard away from home. I figured i had passed the little b****r?! The Urologist and testing were set up for two days later. I was sure I was stone free. No bleeding and no pain. The x ray showed no stone, great news! More blood test and samples and preventative care. Not so fast mister! A week later blood shows up in my pee and just like before, bring on the pain. Back to the doctors to schedule another CT scan and sure enough, there it is, stuck. I was set up for pre op testing and a ureteroscopy, laser lithotripsy and a stent. I am writing this the day after my proceedure. The first two times i peed was very painful. The first looked to be mostly blood. The second was full of clots. The main issue is the feeling of passing a stone every time i piss. The pain is all too familiar with the added painful burning which i assume is from the stent. Pain WILL motivate you and i am developing a fear of urinating! The drugs are ok but not sufficient. Is the worst over? With my experience, i progessively thought " It can't get worse, only better." At this point...not so much!

Hi NY,

Having had two episode of kidney stones myself I can truly sympathize with what you're going through.  I never had to have the the laser, utereroscopy, or stent though.

Personally, I was able to enjoy morphine at the time and don't remember much of the initial diagnosis.  There wasn't any meds involved after though.  If you want fun, try passing that 5mm stone.  I did, no meds!

If you've passed your stones you'll be fine.  Sorry to say You can get them again though.  My first episode was in 1985 (I was 20), the second, 2009, like you at the ripe old age of 44.

Good luck.  Hope you have a speedy recovery.
