I read an article in Sciencenews about Rhodiola, and had been anxious for something to help me with my feelings of depression and a need for an uplift in energy. So I bought two different brands of Rhodiola in a store (BlueBonnet, and also Planetary Herbals).

I couldn't get anything other than a headache from those. Still interested in knowing more about this plant that a friend was raving about, I bought some products from other suppliers and paid a bit more for them. Amazingly, suddenly I had a great experience with Rhodiola. I actually felt excited about getting up in the AM. I had paid about $20 for these, versus $10 for the ones from the store (these came from the Internet). While both brands gave me some results (Arctic Root brand, and Verde Botanica's Mind Body & Spirit), I chose to stick with the latter because I was getting this result every day.

My question is this: how can a plant behave so differently from one brand to another? Also, since my experience with them seemed to indicate that the more you spend the better they work, is this true with all herbs? After this experience, I am going to start at a higher grade of product than the low-end sale brands.

THanks!

It can vary from brand to brand depending on how the company extracts the herb, where the herb is grown, how potent they choose to make it, the quality of the herb grown in general, the care put into making it, etc. In other words, a lot of it is based on how well the company chooses to make a good product.

I have found that many expensive brands are better, yes. This is generally because the ingredients are higher quality, more care and therefore more resources are put into the final product, and it's much less processed than others (often, the more you process something, the cheaper it is; just look at fast food).

I will say that different bodies respond better to different brands and different herbs. Not everyone will do well on rhodiola. Also, not all will do well on the brand that seems to be working for you. It is bothersome, but sometimes you have to "shop" for brands or supplements that work best for you. I'm glad you found something that works. :-)
