There is no cure for IBS but there is relief for flare-ups. A few things your mom needs to do. One, she should keep a food diary of all foods and drinks she consumes and how she feels as this may be the only way to find out what foods trigger flare-ups and then she can avoid them. Coffee and tomatoes are usually high on the list. Two, there are gas-x or bean-o digestimes that help to alleviate the stomach pain, any drug store will carry them. The instructions are included on how to use them. Three, she should have a GI doctor (Gastroenterologist) that she sees regularly to help her with her bowel problems.
I have Celiac disease and a few things that help my abdominal pain when I get it is either a heating pad or hot water bottle against the stomach area. Sucking on a candy size of fresh ginger helps with nausea; do not chew it. Also, with the IBS she may want to try a gluten-free diet for a couple of weeks to see if that helps to relieve the bowel pain as well, doesn't hurt and is a healthy option.
Good luck and if any questions don't hesitate to post back
