I started having really severe symptoms back in November but, truth be told, my very first symptom goes back more than a year. That's when I developed a soreness on the bottom of my right foot that just wouldn't heal. I chalked it up to plantar fasciitis and stopped running. Then, in November, I woke up one day with a stiff neck. I've woken up with stiff necks before, but this one hasn't gone away - four months later. Then my shoulders started to ache every day. Then my lower back. At this point, if I'm still in any position for any length of time my muscles get sore and tight. It's especially bad when I wake up in the mornings, but staying in one position for any length of time during the day can cause my muscles to ache. I'm only 46 and it scares me that this is how I'm going to have to spend the rest of my life. I used to be in tremendous shape. I even wrote a fitness book. That's all been taken away from me because, most days, I can barely move anymore. And like most other people here, I've been to multiple doctors ... none of them have any clue what it is. Honestly, they look at me as if I'm making it all up. I'm at my wits end.

I find it interesting when someone has an experience and that experience then becomes THE defacto answer for anyone else experiencing related symptoms. We all wish life were that easy but it's not. Mold is not the answer for all pain just as Fibromyalgia is not the answer for all pain as you pointed out. Certainly both are legit but mold is not high on the list of supects or prevelance. Not all mold causes the same issues as black mold etc.
Some people get nerve damage after an injury which can lead to RSD. Others have low Vitamin D, some may have heavy metal poisoning (environmental, tooth fillings etc.). Thyroid, depression, Low testosterone, low adrenal output THAT CAN BE MEASURED (not to be confused with adrenal fatigue). These are all fairly common in comparison to mold. Let's see what else. Low to no HGH (this can also be measured and does NOT respond to tonics sold on the internet). Endocronologists and some internal medicine M.D.'s can be good resources to get the right tests. Most of these tests can be done in one session.
Some people get body aches etc. from wheat and other food products although its not as prevelant as the media plays up. The easiest thing though is to first find a good doctor who will take 5-6 vials of blood and do a complete work-up including all hormones, Vit D, etc. At least you'll be able to rule some things out. Its a bit more conservative than taking a vacation for a few weeks.

Your experience is so similar to how my symptoms began, just in a different order. First it started in my lower back, then my legs ached so intensely I couldn't stop moving them in bed. I went to a spinal surgeon who performed an MRI and recommended a spinal fusion. Problem is, he only fused one of the two herniated disc levels. Needless to say the surgery didn't help and I will NEVER agree to another back surgery again. My pain management doctor has tried so many different things with me such as different meds, epidurals, and even an implanted neurostimulator, all to no avail. My symptoms have only gotten worse over the years proceeding the surgery. My middle back started to hurt like someone was stabbing me in one spot and then my right shoulder started to hurt/feel tight, and then my right jaw started hurting and feeling tight too. Now everything just hurts and it doesn't matter how much exercise or what kind of exercise I do, I always end up feeling worse. I get frequent headaches, especially when I'm in a lot of pain. No position is comfortable very long and I get irritated and frustrated by the lack of energy no matter how much sleep I get. When my neck starts to hurt really bad, I have to turn my whole body to look to the side or behind me. But the worst is when my pain makes it hurt and difficult just to breathe! The best pain regimen my doctor and I have found so far has been the Fentanyl patches along with some Soma and Vicodin for breakthrough pain and muscle relief. And not only do I experience that physical pain, I also experience digestive issues as well. I've already had my gallbladder removed. But the deep stomach cramps and diarrhea or constipation (depending on the day) are also painful and quite embarrassing. When the cramps are at their worst, the pain is so bad it makes you sick to your stomach! I am SO tired of this and I never imagined my life this way at 28, and this all started at 23. I wish their was a test for Fibromyalgia because I don't have the money for the doctors to run all the necessary tests to rule out everything else before considering Fibromyalgia. Shoot, I can't even afford to have my thyroid checked, but I think I need to talk with my pain management doctor about permanent disability since most days are bad days for me. With the lack of energy, coupled with severe pain and many times intestinal discomfort, it's difficult to hold a job. Most days I barely move from the bed to the kitchen and back to bed. It's a miserable existence.

Michael,
Man that sucks. It sounds very much like RSD or RSDS which can often start ith an injury. A Neurologist or Rheumatalogist would be the best bet. There are nerve blocks, nerve pain meds like neurontin and even Embrel (used off label) have shown promise.

It could also be another nerve disorder.
Because of your age (over 35) and the fact that you used to excerise a lot and stopped, I would get ALL your hormones checked along with Vit D. A thyroid, testosterone, HGH, adrenal or even a Vit D deficiency (each one by itself) can make you ache, stiff, and lower your energy big-time. Even if your were to get diagnosed with RSD or something similar, that doesn't mean you could'nt also have Vit D, HGH or a testosterone deficiency. You often have to push them to run the full panel of hormones - especially HGH. I had 4 of those and they found I have a pituitary tumor. Once treated with replacement hormones, its been much better

Had many of these to extremes... almost lost my job .. doctors including specialists couldn't figure it out. these are a few things that helped me.
ache and sore feeling.. Vitamin D3 It took about a month to really feel the difference and figure out the right levels tiredness, also found it helped with a sound sense of mood. Now I If it start feeling that old way I know I forgot something!
extreme to mild stiffness in back and also had problems with neck, legs... x-rays showed mild problems... I found out from years of leaning forward... I developed changes in muscle and spine tone in the wrong direction... (even 4 years of doctors didn't tell me that.) started out with exercises that helped to strengthen my back and help stand more straight... then I also put a t shirt under my spine in the sore spots.. starting at an hour at a time .. one layer eventually ... a towel folded in half all night.. do it slowly... you didn't get this way over night! It has taken me 2 years of this routine to get rid of the above and muscle spasms.
all of all.... don't quit moving... yes! you don't have to be a work out nut to keep circulation and muscle tone.
One of the other possibilities.. is the lack of a good diet... some people are sensitive to things that can cause a reaction to your body .. for example if I eat eggs.... I literally get a reaction of gas too a flu like reaction.. to the point of fever and aches.
Some people eat to much carbs... sugar.. really... my doctor says I am not diabetic.... but if my sugar runs.. over 100... I start getting sluggish, wake up tired, feel bloated, etc....
good Luck

I suffer from the same thing almost everyday. I'm diabetic and have not been diagnosed with fibromyalgia or arthritis but have found that I get like this after I have eaten certain foods. I have checked into inflammation and found that when I change my diet it helps a lot. Like they say staying active keeps the aches away. Try changing your diet. Good Luck.

much of what you say is how I feel. I tell my wife I just cant do things that are on the floor. Hate washing my feet, and it's a stretch to even wipe my bum. When I get into bed it is hard to relax my leg mussels to go to sleep. When I get up after sitting I am very weak and it is painful. So It sounds like we're in the same boat. I have only just begun to think that it is a medical problem. That is why I'm googling it now.
