I'm so glad I finally googled 'Night terrors and tonsillectomy." My 6 year old is on day 9, and starting on day 5 or 6, the night terrors got really bad. Flailing her hands in front of her, slapping at her legs, asking for Mommy, emitting a weird high-pitched short shriek. They've increased from 1x per night to 3x per night. We have never given her the codeine, just regular Tylenol every 6 hours (although today we went every 4 hours). Her breath stank is gone and she's eating almost regularly and is a lot more active, but the pain is still there. Good to know there's a light at the end of the tunnel and she's not alone, but yeah, I certainly don't remember "possessed child at night" being on the post-operative information sheet!

My 2 yr granddaughter had her tonsils and adenoids removed 10 days ago and was waking very upset every night and I thought it was pain from the surgery. On night 7 she woke up with blood gushing from her mouth and had to be transported by ambulance to he hospital where they put her on morphine and then hydrcodeine. She’s having a terrible time now that she ‘s back home. She’s hitting her parents and won’t sleep. Any advice would be appreciated.

It’s the referred ear pain that’s probably waking them
Up. My son holds his head and ears and wakes up every hour too at night. He’s only 3 and can’t express what’s hurting him

Similar to several of the other posts, our 6 close to 7yr old has his tonsils removed. He was in pain but did pretty good the first couple of nights. At day 4-6 so far he has been experiencing night terrors. He has had them in the past so we have seen this before but its always a little distressful watching them thrash and whine/cry out and be totally out of it. His eyes are typically dilated as well. We just comfort him as best we can and tell hime go back to sleep lay down relax and stroke his arms/legs to help ease him back to sleep sometimes it lasts a few minutes or as long as 8-10min. I ask him questions like whats your name and can you count to 3 if he doesn't respond I know he is in the sleep terror mode. Another thing that started with our little guy is i can barely understand him after day 3 his voice sounds inaudible a little different and weak when he talks. Good luck to all of you out there, stay strong.
