I need to ask about this at my regular place, over on dailystrength, but I've never thought about it before.
they get irritated, especially when running or cycling on machines at gym.

Hi there,
I am a personal trainer and have over 20 years of experience in the fitness field. I've had every exercise-related pain out there from shin splints to tennis elbow.
I have good news, this is normal. You don't have a sickness, disease or anything like that. Basically when you exercise, and sweat is absorbed into your clothes making them wet, you bare chest rubs against it. The constant friction of the damp sweaty shirt causes your nipples to peak. Over extend period of time they become more and more irritable.
I freaked out when this first happen to me too! I went to a doctor, who I am close with, and we had a nice little laugh over it. It is 100% normal, your nipples are just sick of rubbing against your shirt!
I deal with it, but sometimes when I know I am going to exercise for a while and it might become very irritable I do the following:
1. Wear clothes that cling to your chest. This holds your nipples in place so there is no friction. I wear Under-Armor, but there are tons of other brands at your local store.
2. It sounds stupid, but it works. Bandaids. Get the water proof ones so when you sweat they stay in place.
3. Wear a normal undershirt and tuck it in. Tuck it VERY tight, as if you were wearing something equal to step one.
The only way to stop this is to cut the friction or eliminate it all together. I hope this helps and keep up the good work!

I've ha. This happen a lot but it also happens when I don't wear a shirt, so can it just happen from sweat absorption alone?

If friction is eliminated as the problem, then I would have blood work done. This can be a side effect of high estrogen levels. Usually this won't be an issue unless you are under 30 or have naturally high testosterone, and doing high intensity endurance workouts, or are taking steroids, which forces your body to produce more estrogen to offset the testosterone your body is producing/synthetically administering. If estrogen levels are the problem an anti-estrogen can fix this.

Nipples rubbing on shirts can be prevented by going bare chested. Or you can also apply a little vaseline jelly to your nips as lube, talcum powder on your nips as lube, shave chaffing chest hair an inch or so around each nipple, or wear slippery nylon shirts that slide over nips easier. Repetitive motion over time can rub on your nips in shirts or against chest hair as you move around.

I wouldn't recommend shaving anything. When I had bypass surgery they shaved my chest. My whole chest was sore from clothing rubbing on it for weeks after the surgery. It wasn't just where the skil saw ran amok it was the whole surface of both breasts. I figured it had to do with the nerves that had been cut, until they sent me for a stress test. The soreness was beginning to subside by then and they shaved me again to attach the electrodes. The pain was BACK!!! It was the stubble getting caught in the clothing.

The real question is: how do you stop the stinging pain? What do i do? I put vasaline on it but it is still painfull. What topical analgesic can work on the irritating pain?
I will wear my underarmor next time i play 2 hours of hot humid outfield.

What you said really works. I learnt it in the hard way. I realized that after i gained some weight, my nipples never got irritatred, mainly because my gym shirt got a little tighter, and did not rubb against my nipples.
