Does the title mean I have cured my diabetes? I have been a type II diabetic patient for the last 8 years, the last 6 months requiring insulin in addition to my drugs. Three weeks ago I went with my husband to a trip in South America. We have been saving up so many years for this 20-day trip (and it was worth it!), but my baggage (actually a piece of it) got lost while we were taking a local flight. I only had enough insulin with me to cover my needs for 1 to 2 days. Of course, I got panicky about the whole situation and after contacting a physician, I was able to get some insulin (which we had to pay for in cash) after 3 days without any insulin. Nonetheless, we managed to purchase the insulin, but my measurements were fine. My blood sugar was marginally elevated only. Thus, I decided to only closely monitor by sugar and use the insulin (which for some strange reasons did not feel comfortable using...) only if my sugar would go up significantly. Which never happened? Am I cured - shall I stop using insulin?

There is no cure for diabetes, unfortunately. It can only be managed. You will want to confer with your doctor as to what to do with your insulin regimen. If you can manage by diet, that would be great! See if you can just take insulin when you need it. I am not sure if you are on regular, long-acting, or what but if you can get away with not taking as much of it, all the better! Make an appointment with your doctor and explain the situation. If you can manage your diabetes without insulin, you're not cured of it; you are just in control.

Well, first congratulations on this finding....however, I would really caution other readers and visitors NOT to embark on such quest. There are reasons why you were not experiencing problems with your diabetes during your vacation. One of the reasons could be decreased carbohydrate intake during your stay - may be you were not eating as much as usually. This story could have had a completely alternative ending, since lack of insulin could precipitate severe hyperglycemia, potentially leading to hyperglycemia, dehydration and all other consequences. Nonetheless, regarding your issue - definitely, if your sugars will be within normal values, you should discuss with your physician and continue on oral drugs only. Best, Tom
