Has anyone had a fear of hypos and quit taking your insulin?  I am guilty of doing such a thing.  I have been on insulin therapy for about a year, then one day I had taken my insulin and had my lunch.  All of a sudden, I felt like the blood ran out of me.  I felt lightheaded and confused. I wasn't sure what was going on.... my husband looked at me and asked me if I was ok, then I couldn't stand anymore and just sat on the ground.  Everyone was looking at me funny all the while when my aunt thought of giving me something to drink---pop.  The pop brought my sugar back up and I realized I experienced my first hypo.  From then on, I have been frightened that it will happen again. My blood sugars have been high, of course, but I can't bring myself to take my insulin and risk another hypo.  Will someone please help me?

It seems that you had a very bad incident with your hypoglycemia, so bad that you will not risk getting it again, even if it means that you will not take your insulin.  I would recommend that you see a psychotherapist that can help you overcome your fear of hypos.  It will entail you to be subjected to a process called desensitization that will ease you back into the insulin therapy.  You will learn to be prepared in any event that it could ever begin to happen (the hypos). You will learn to recognize when your blood sugars are going low, and you will intervene with suitable food choices to keep your sugar back up.  You will learn that you have control of your blood sugars even when you take insulin.  It is essential you stay on insulin therapy because your body needs it. It is a matter of life and death, to be frank.  I wish you the best in seeking treatment.
