What is the difference if your child has been exam by Pediatric Optometrist and not Pediatric Ophthalmologist? They are both eye doctors as I understand and they both can prescribe glasses. Is there any explanation?

My understandings of these two types of eye doctors come from my personal experience. Both types of eye doctors examine and prescribe glasses, diagnose and treat eye disease, however, each profession is unique. Ophthalmologists are trained to do surgery and optometrists are schooled in the developmental (behavioral, functional or environmental) aspects of vision. Optometrists are more apt to use lenses, prisms and vision therapy to enhance and improve visual function, so these interventions often improve children's academic and other abilities.
