I also had a very hard time after my left kidney nephrectomy. (renal cell carcinoma) The pain was unbelievable for a couple of months. I had severe muscle spasms as well. My doctor told me that I was having this pain due to my other organs moving around in shock because everything in there had been disturbed. I'm five years out now, I can tell you it does get better but just took me about a year to get back to normal. Now I'm pretty sure I am dealing with scar tissue where that kidney was. Like you, I am just grateful to God to just be alive and cancer free!

I donated my left kidney to my daughter 13 days ago today. It was a laparoscopic hand assist and went very well. I spent one night in the hospital after surgery and was able to return to work (desk job) one week after the surgery. I'm back to walking my dogs 3 miles every day...albeit at a much slower pace and feel pretty normal. Two days ago I awoke in the night with what felt like a back pain, but it was suspiciously located where my left kidney used to reside. After getting up and moving around, the pain subsided considerably and by the end of the day it was completely gone. I experienced the same pain last night and started searching the web for information. Thank you all for your contributions. Your comments and shared experiences have assuaged my concerns. I wish you all the best.

Why did you have a Nephrectomy to begin with, did you have a cancerous tumor? Why didn't you have a Laparoscopic procedure?
I had the same radical procedure done in 2001. I fought for 5 years to deal with the pain in my back, left side of my stomach and lower thigh. As soon as I stood to walk the pain increased until I couldn't walk, I finally ended up in a wheelchair. My surgeon thought it was a Hernia. So one year after the radical Nephrectomy I had another surgery. My surgeon said I didn't have a hernia, but the incision from the radical Nephrectomy was so large that it severed nerves that have not repaired themselves and there is permanent damage to the nerves and Oblique muscles. I no longer have a waistline, I have a huge bulge above my waist in my back and the left side of my abdomen feels as if I'm carrying a watermelon in it.

I had my right kidney removed 3 years ago due to cancer. I still have swelling under the scariest and also pain when I twist or cough, feels like something moves. My 3 follow up ct scans have been fine. I'm wondering if it's a hernia bit wouldn't it show up on scan?

Had my right kidney removed - in doctor speak: "T3aN0M0 grade 4 renal cell carcinoma state III" one year ago (11/17). Previously suffered slight lower back pain. After and since surgery, have had almost continual lower back pain on right side that radiates around the right hip and down the right thigh. Pain most acute in early morning hours (5-6 a.m.).
I had a "medial branch block", steroid injections in the back and finally, recently, a rhizotomy The rhizotomy has helped but pain persists. I suspect scar tissue from surgery may be the culprit causing the pain. I take hydrocodone pill (10-325) to alleviate pain.....usually one in the early morning and another at bedtime. Occasionally, I take a third pill after golf three times a week. I don't like taking the opiate but can't take anti inflammatory medicine like Mobic/Meloxicam which previously relieved back pains. Will continue to see orthopedic doc in search of solutions/relief. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I had my right kidney removed because of cancer. Fortunately it was confined to the kidney. Have some pain when I sleep on my right side. I change position immediately. Have nausea but can still eat. Lost weight 179 to 165, good but bad. It can 3-6 months to get your full energy back. For pain I take 5mg Percocet. All in all doing well. Get out and walk, the more you exercise the better you will feel.

Have you tried acupuncture? I know it doesn't work for everyone but it's worked for me when pills haven't. Just had my right kidney removed two weeks ago due to RCC. I'm going to acupuncture next week for the first time since the surgery.

I have the”bump” as well. It’s more common with left nephrectomys. It’s called an abdominal flank bulge. I’ll always have it. I too have pain and it’s been 5 mo the ago. Especially if I sit long or ride too long. I’m concerned also.

no, stints are to be changed or removed after 2 months tops. it hurts when you pee because the stint causes a reflux action just like a straw. It means it back flows everytime you pee. Painful. See another Dr or tell that one to do something
