I am 9 weeks post op. Have had differing pains since then and experienced similar to what you have described. My pain by the bone at the top of the shoulder was explained as being related to the nerve - I was told to GENTLY massage the area with the help of a lubricant, this helped but do check if this is recommended for your shoulder.
Now 3 weeks into PT, at the clinic muscle massaging by the PT helped unlock the tight feeling but takes about 4 days for the area to not be tender to the touch. Massage hurts at the time but worth it for the result afterwards. PT went on holiday for a week so I missed a massage and shoulder went back to being really tight, I couldn't wait for the next visit as it felt like things were going backwards.
Following the exercises very carefully and checking when pain is okay and when it is not. Also asked if there was anything I shouldn't be doing and was told DO NOT LIFT anything with affected arm.
Although my Range of Movement has improved the progress is not what it should be by now which is frustrating, but having read other comments I now appreciate for most people there is a very long and uncomfortable recovery.
Wishing you strength and the best in your recovery.

Hi there , I had rotator cuff surgery 13 months ago to shave a bone spur and repair 2 torn tendons the pain was very severe for the first 2 to 3 weeks - BUT a few months after surgery the pain got worse than ever - has after further x-rays I was told I now had calcific tendonitis ... thankfully that has subsided now but it took about 7 or 8 months from surgery , I think I depends on what you have had done - most was another post op condition which occured

I'm also 9 weeks past surgery and still feel a lot of discomfort periodically, especially after i wake up in the morning. I started PT two weeks after surgery and my shoulder is close to back to normal flexibility, at certain positions I still get pain. I also have periods of no pain if my arm is in the right position. Depending on when you start PT, your arm is still going to be a little sore for a couple of months afterwards.

Hi, glad u r doing so well. Obviously you had a minimal amount of work done you speak nothing of anchors etc. No two people perceive pain the same way. One should not be so quick to judge. Once again I am glad u r doing so well.

Hi L.
Did you have your surgery? Did you get to do your trip? I am only 62 and a total mess after extensive work on my shoulder. You are an inspiration!!

On a lighter note why is it that when I lie down to do one group of exercises my cat decides I have done this solely to provide her with a comfortable place to curl up and sleep - though she only gets a 'catnap' before I move on to my next exercise.

I too had rotar cuff surgery on 12-23-13 and must say that even though I am still week and have some pain, this pain is much preferable to the pain I experienced prior to surgery. I am able to sleep through the night now and working toward full recovery. I am a 59 year old woman who was very active with swimming and am certain that swimming and water aerobics will be the key to full recovery.

Hi Everyone, its Feb 10 2014, my name is Vonni 47/female.
Just had MRI and am waiting for results on Feb 14...after reading everyone's post, I'm now scared to death if he says I need surgery. I'm also Type II diabetic (controlled sugars), but have also heard that diabetics take a LONG time to heal! :(
First, to all of you in the forum, thank you for sharing your stories. Each one of your experiences say alot about how strong you are and I am very appreciative that you started this post.
Second...I live alone...should I hire a visiting home nurse for a few days?
Third...how much time should I take off from work? Someone said they went back to a desk position after one week...is a week enough?
Fourth...is your arm/shoulder in a cast THEN in the sling? Or is there a large gauze / wrapping you have to change? Are there stitches?
Fifth...does the doctor require you to sleep in a reclyner (I dont have one)? Or are people saying that because its too painful after surgery to lie in bed even if propped up?
{Sigh}
Thank you again everyone...your triumps inspire me to stay strong when the doc says I have to have the surgery.

Hi if you do require surgery how long it takes to recover can be influenced by what surgery you have, but I would suggest you get ready ahead of time.
I spent the week before surgery trying to do as many daily activities with just one hand to see what was going to be difficult. From there many meals were prepared ahead of time. You may need help but a friend or relative would be enough, but if the only option is a nurse it would give you some peace of mind
Time off work varies from weeks to months depending on what you do. I had an office job returning for half days after 3.5 weeks but only on the condition it did not interfere with physic which is most important.
What you arm is in will depend on your doctors preference and also what you have done. I had open surgery and had the gauze type sling with a waterproof dressing.
If you don't have a recliner see if you can borrow of hire one - sleeping in a bed in the first weeks is impossible.
Wishing you the best.

God bless you for responding. I will take those important measures (and see if Rent-a-Center has a comfortable recliner to borrow for the time being). I hope you are recovering well from your surgery. :)

Mike M, Thank you for your post. I am to have my surgery on Wednesday March 12th and these posts are freaking me out. I was wondering if I should just live the rest of my life with the pain and not have the surgery. I am determined to do the work and push through the pain so that my shoulder is good as new at the end of this. Besides there is such thing as pain management, I am sure my doc won't let me loose sleep from pain.

I just had mine done a week aog and I'll tell ya what, had I known it was going to be this painful I wouldn't have done it. I'd rather give birth. I went on the web to see how long the sleepless nights continue. I'm feeling very disheartened to know that I'll be suffering like this for quite some time. I don't wear the sling they gave me because it's too painful to waer so I guess I'm getting "SOME" use of it. It is my dominant arm and so it's second nature to do things with it, however limited it may be.
