I have a similar problem. When i talk in an audience(become a little bit emotional) i start to have throbbing pain at my lower back and i have to stop talking..it worsens if i continue speaking. it lasts a minute or 2. I am a doctor and i think it probably originates from muscle spasm at the site. It is definitely related to emotion/stress. It may be due to a surge of adrenaline;it is known stress worsens even chronic back pain. There are some other diseases which can present with a throbbing back pain like Arterio-venous fistula and i am planning to have MRI of the spine soon. But i think life style change to decrease our anxiety may solve the problem. I noticed in my self that i am anxious.

I am one of you! I'm a 26 year old male, very thin body type, average health. I've paid attention to it over the last couple years but have no idea how soon in my life it actually started because for a while it didn't dawn on me that it wasn't normal. For me it tends to happen when I'm experiencing INSTANT RELIEF after a high stress situation. For example if I'm awaiting test results and I'm super nervous, heart pounding, mind racing, then I get the results and find out that I passed, that's when I feel it. It's a strange dichotomy of feeling an emotional high simultaneously with a physical pain. It's like I'm classically conditioned to enjoy the discomfort it causes because the emotional relief I'm feeling is worth it. It doesn't happen so often that it's lowering my quality of life or anything. Just as long as it's not an indication of a more serious condition, I'd say it's tolerable.

I know its over a year since you commented but this has only recently happened to me ...twice. Both times during conflict in meetings while sitting. I might add that I'm a nature guide in Africa and have had elephants, lions and hippos all running full speed at me with intent to harm and not once have I had this sensation, yet one a heated meeting brought it on... so i think there may be merit to your response.

I find it odd that this could be caused by adrenal glands, but I get this horrible throbbing from the bottom of my spine, up and up with each heartbeat. When it gets between my shoulder blades it wraps around my chest and I get a few intense heartbeats that seem like I'm having a heart attack. I don't get the adrenaline rushes though. All I have to do is get up to let the dogs out and sit back down. As the pain moves up, it disappears in my lower spine. I have hypothyroidism, major depression disorder, generalized and social anxiety, degenerate disc disease in lower back, my thighs are numb, and fibromyalgia. I am being treated for all with meds which means I don't really have adrenaline spikes. And say I would due to a near miss while driving, it doesn't happen then. The depression keeps never down so getting up to let dogs out would just be a change in position. I don't know what it is but when it reaches my chest and feels like a heart attack, it's very scary!

You guys are all experiencing Adrenal Fatigue. i have it and I'm a 42 yr old females. Cause - too much stress for too much of your life - adrenals burnout. If they fail it's a life or death situation called Addinson's disease. If they are a haunted/fatigued you have chronic lack of energy, pain in kidney region or low back or both, may become more emotional or reactive, may be more sensitive to lights (need sunglasses even on a cloudy day), some noises bight become bothersome, very sleepy when you should be waking up and can't sleep at night, racing thoughts, and you may be experiencing thyroid problems (thyroid is the 'gas' and your adrenals are the 'engine' - thyroid problems usually go hand in hand with AF.) etc. See an Integrative Wholistic MD. They are out there, but harder to find and usually cost more - BUT WORTH IT!! Most doctors were not taught about AF (adrenal fatigue) and they don't recognize it as a condition. A wholistic doctor will know how to treat - with vitamins, diet, hormone testing, stress reduction, meditation. Meditation is to teach your brain to react differently to stress so you don't go into fight or flight all the time. Diet is ESSENTIAL. NO CAFFEINE as caffeine stimulates the adrenals to work - and if they are fatigued the caffeine FORCES them to work. Same with Chocolate - theobromine does the same as caffeine. Bummer- I know. I was a HEAVY coffee drinker since 8 yrs old (I know- too young) but I'veHAD to get off coffee as it was making AF worse. Another symptom may be you wake between 2-5 am hungry. You need to eat fat and a bit of protein before bed to help you sleep deeper and keep you satieated till morning. If you exercise a lot - STOP. I was a personal trainer that REALLY enjoyed working out TOO MUCH. On top of a failing economy and almost losing our house (2007), and an emotionally/mentally taxing ADHD, ODD, OCD, Borderline Personality child, AND I was training for an Ultra Marathon 125 km Canadian Death Race, I eventually went into AF. I didn't get diagnosed until 1 year ago by my Wholistic MD. Keep looking for a doctor that believes you as most doctors don't know or they use the wrong tests. Most ENDOS are useless and son't know AF but some do. Good-luck all. It's a very slow, long, hard, climb back up.

Hi, I'm 25 years old and the reason im here is because I'm searching for the same answer. I was yelling and suddenly after I say down and a rush of pain was flowing through me. My back has always troubled me, but why has this happened to me?

Maybe I have an answer. I had a home invasion while I was sleeping some years ago, so now often wake up very alarmed during the night, with my heart racing very fast. I leap out of bed ready to do battle. When I realise it's another fals alarm and start to calm down, my calves hurt like crazy, and can barely support me, so much pain. Over Christmas I went to see a deep tissue masseuse. It was awful, I was screaming and slapping the table with my hand, she was still brutal! But the next day I felt like I was walking around on someone else's legs. I have had two of my 'home invasion' wake-up since then, and while I do still feel the pain in my calves, it's SIGNIFICANTLY reduced. The reason I got my calves massaged in the first place is because I often have cramps in my calves while I sleep. So my suggestion is that perhaps the area you are experiencing pain has muscle knots that need to be dealt with, or something else that's my massage combated, maybe lactic acid? Whatever it was, it's helped a lot, so I will keep getting those horrible massages.

Yes, during orgasm was the first time I experienced throbbing pain going up my spine that left me with a headache for a minute or two after. It made me afraid to have an orgasm. When I checked with my gyno she said it wouldn't hurt me and I should just try to relax. She gave me the name of a counselor who could help me with relaxation techniques. I did not seek counseling. Subsequently, I have had the back pain in situations when I am walking fast or running, especially in cold weather. I had an epidural with my last child, about 30 years ago and I have wondered if there was any correlation to the needle in my spine and this occasional pain.

I wonder about the epidural connection, too. Mine was 30 years ago. I was already in labor so they had a bit of a time getting it hooked up. For a few years after, I would have an occasional pain at or around the site of the epidural. That pain subsided, but now I've had it at orgasm or when running (for the train, too!) or walking fast in cold weather. It's kind of scary but fortunately doesn't happen too often.

Yes, and I wonder if there is a connection, too.
