Hello all.

After a surgical abortion, some individuals may experience temporary discomfort or side effects, including heartburn or acid reflux. Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest, often caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus. While heartburn is not directly related to the abortion procedure itself, it can occur due to a variety of factors, such as changes in hormone levels, stress, or medication use.

The duration of heartburn symptoms can vary from person to person. In most cases, it should resolve on its own within a few days or weeks. You may try the following self-care measures to alleviate heartburn:

  1. Avoid triggering foods and beverages: Certain foods and drinks can exacerbate heartburn symptoms. Examples include spicy foods, citrus fruits, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and fatty or fried foods. Try to identify any particular triggers and avoid them.

  2. Eat smaller, more frequent meals: Instead of consuming large meals, try eating smaller portions throughout the day. This can help prevent excessive stomach distension and reduce the likelihood of heartburn.

  3. Sit upright after eating: Remain in an upright position for at least a couple of hours after meals. This helps keep your stomach contents down and reduces the likelihood of acid reflux.

  4. Raise the head of your bed: If you experience heartburn at night, try elevating the head of your bed by using a few pillows or placing blocks under the bedposts. This slight elevation can help prevent acid reflux while you sleep.

  5. Over-the-counter antacids or acid reducers: Antacids, such as calcium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide, can provide temporary relief from heartburn symptoms. Acid reducers, such as ranitidine or famotidine, can also be effective in reducing stomach acid production. However, it's important to consult a pharmacist or doctor before taking any medication, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions or are currently taking other medications.
