No, not the brief pain you mention. These women are talking about severe pain. Has happened to me after menopause.

This just happened to me on Thursday and I am 24. I had a LEEP in June and have a lot of random spotting or heavy bleeding. I also don't get periods anymore because I have PCOS. I went to the dr. To check and make sure everything was alright after my LEEP because of all the bleeding. Mind you this is the second time I have had to be checked.... They cannot find a cause for it. The pap hurt so bad. The nurse inserted the speculum about 5 or 6 times and it was very painful. The swab felt like I was being cut!!

Let's be real you say it isn't unbearable you say
That's all well and good for you but they can't even get the speculum inside me at all, even the juvenile one won't go in it feels like I am being torn in half
We aren't all built the same :(

I've had the same problem. For the last four years, my Pap smears have been so painful. The last physician I went to told me that it's because of menopause. I'm 55 years of age. It does hep if your doctor uses the smallest pap instrument, make sure you make Thai request.

I was told that they cannot us the KY for the speculum on the pap smear because the cells stick to the lubricant. That is why they use the warm water.

i heard that vaginal athropy causes the procedure to be painful. I am pain sensitive so unfortunately I am leaning towards skipping the pap smears altogether!! I have heard something about hpv testing being done along with or without pap smears. I will do further research on this...

I am 52 and postmenopausal. I tried to have a pap done by my NP. Three tries and failed. It was sooo painful. And I burned for two days. For those of you who say it is isn't painful... You are dead wrong. I got a referral to a GYN. I am pretty nervous and my appt. is not til Feb. 3rd. If the GYN can't do it, no more paps for me. I can't deal with the pain. And before anyone calls me a wimp, I have been thru more surgery and procedures than most people.

MY GYN said it was because i haven't had children, and not active sexually, the tissue referred to as the 'Hyman ring' grew back......and he would give my hormone replacement therapy and i can use dilators, or undergo surgery to remove the tissue.

I also had mine last monday and as previously said its not the neck of the vagina that hurts, its when inside, the pain was excrutiating and i told her to stop in a very clear manner, it felt like it was hitting a wall inside. i let her attempt a second time but the same excrutiating pain again and told her no way and to stop. i am 56 and periods stopped 1 and half years ago. if something hurts that much they shouldnt be doing it. its your body saying THIS ISNT RIGHT. so girls if it hurts that much demand them TO STOP.

Being real, you don't have a problem with it. Lucky you, the pap tests I have been having for 25 years have been fine ie:'a momentary pinch and pain.' It is good that you have manageable discomfort. The experience now at 58, non- vaginal childbirth, obese, vaginally celibate for 12 years, and trying not to pass out from excruciating pain while trying deep breathing excercises, is rather different. Next time I will be taking two valium and I'll try again.

you are so brave, I gave up some years ago as reduced to tears after sex and pap smears

Are you f*****g kidding? Clearly you've never experienced what these women (and myself) have gone through. This is not a split second. And it sure as hell has nothing to do with posture.
