hey i am an 18 year old girl and i just noticed this bump on the upper left side of my vaginal lip. it hurts and is some how preventing me from walking a little, when i move and it gets touched even just a little it stings really bad. i think its a pimple but its unusually big and red plus it seems to be inflamed. i havent put anything on it so far, and i am afraid to go to a doctor for this.. it is only one very big lump nothing else seems to be growing but aside from the lump, i shaved myself, so i could see what the problem was..and i didnt really see too much but when i touched it the first time it felt like more of a lump than a pimple. could this be serious? i dont usually get any pimples on the vagina and if i did it wouldnt be this big but this situation im in right now is scaring me a little. what should i do? can anyone please help me? or give me some pointers on how to subside the pain? .. its really killing me. i might have made the wrong decision in trying to pop it.. coz it only made the problem worse now it hurts even more than it did before.. please help me..

Hi, try not to worry, this sounds like a bartholins cyst, which is basically a blocked duct. Although its painful and sore, it will go down, sometimes they come to a head, and if you must squeeze it then expect to see a lot of blood / pus and disinfect it well afterwards. Otherwise if you resist the temptation dont squeeze it leave it alone and it will go down in a few days

It's probably a boil.  Bartholins glands behind the lower lips.  And the cyst doesn't come to a head.  Boils progress pretty quickly.  They may look like a simple lump in the morning, then be pointy (form a head) at night.  A cyst is a lump that will either grow, shrink or stay the same size, but will not look like a pimple.

Whether it's a cyst or a boil, warm compresses are the recommended treatment.  A cyst may go away on its own.  Give it 3-5 days for a cyst, then make an appointment with a GYN if it doesn't resolve on its own.

If it's a boil, it will take about 10-14 days from start to finish: formation, forming a head, oozing pus and healing up.  It may also get much larger than it was when you first saw it.  (This is also true of a cyst, but I believe a cyst grows much more slowly.)

DO NOT TRY TO SQUEEZE OUT THE PUS!  Doing this can cause the infection to get into the bloodstream and make you really sick.  Keep the area clean and wash your hands thoroughly when handling it.  Do not shave.  In fact, if it is a boil, it may very well have come from shaving - unclean razors or ingrown hairs.

Warm, moist compresses used often help the healing process.  It's soothing, and brings blood to the area which carry infection-fighting cells.  It helps the boil "come to a head" and to burst.  Sometimes it truly is a burst.  Sometimes, it's just a slow leak.  Keep it clean, but do not try to rush the healing process.  A scar may remain where the boil was, but once it's empty of pus and the wound is closed, no more treatment is needed and you can go about your normal activities.
