THE DOCTORS I'M SEEING IS AT THE UNIV OF LOUISVILLE HOSPITAL ENDO CLINIC. YES IT'S A LEARNING HOSPITAL, BUT THE RESIDENT DOC WORKS ALONG WITH AN ATTENDING. THEY DIAGNOSED MY HYPERPTH SYMPTOMS THRU LAB WORK WHICH SHOWED MY TSH LEVELS BEING HIGH AND MY T4 FREE LOW AND MY CALCIUM LEVEL WAS HIGH. MY VITAMIN D WAS VERY LOW SO SHE PUT ME ON 10,000 iu IMMEDIATELY FOR 6 MONTHS. NOW I TAKE 1,000 iu OF D. CALCIUM AND D IS NORMAL NOW. GUESS MY D WAS LOW BECAUSE I DON'T INTAKE OF THINGS THAT HAVE D AND CALCIUM IN THEM, NOR DO I GET SUN FOR 10 TO 15 MINUTES A DAY.
IT'S BEEN A YEAR SINCE MY ONE PARATHYROID REMOVAL IN JUNE2009 AND I FEEL GREAT, BUT MY ENDO DOC SAYS MY TSH IS SLIGHTLY ELEVATED AND SHE TENDS TO THINK I'VE GOT THE HOSHIMOTO DISEASE AND WANTS ME TO TAKE THE 25 mcg OF LEVOTHYROXIN AGAIN. I WAS TAKING IT ABOUT 2 WEEKS IN FEB 2009 AND HAD SEVERE HEADACHSE AND MY LEFT BREAST HURT...I STOPPED TAKING IT AND THE HEADACHE & BREAST PAIN WENT AWAY...MY TSH LEVEL WENT BACK TO NORMAL. THOUGH...NOW THAT IT'S UP AGAIN, SHE WANTS TO PUT ME ON IT AGAIN. I'LL TAKE IT AGAIN, BUT I'M GOING TO DOCTOR MYSELF ON THIS AND TAKE THE 25 mcg PILL EVERY OTHER DAY TO SEE HOW MY BODY REACTS TO THAT. IF I GET THE HEADACHES AND BREAST PAIN AGAIN, I'LL CONSIDER TAKING SYNTHROID AND NOT THE GENERIC TO SEE IF MY BODY REACTS BETTER TO THAT. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Hello,
I'm a 27 year old male that had the parathyroid surgery done yesterday at 9 a.m. After reading parathyroid.com I thought that this would be a "walk in the park surgery." My doctor was pretty hesitant to let me believe that; he indicated that it was not as easy as lead to believe in Jim Norman's website. My doctor told me he was going to do the MIRP technique first, because he was pretty sure that the pre-surgery scan showed my adenoma in the top right of my throat. During surgery he didn't find it there, as the radioactive dye wasn't making the tumor show up like the first time during diagnosis and it was hiding behind my trachea. The only thing he could physically see was the ACTUAL gland and not the tumor, so it looked normal at first. Then he made another incision to look into the left side of my throat: nothing there either. Only after tugging at the one he originally thought to be the affected gland did it show to be connected to the hidden "grape sized" tumor. My PTH and calcium levels fell to normal levels almost immediately after it was removed and I was released same-day last night at about 8 p.m. I have experienced the change of voice and difficulty to swallow, but that is caused by the irritation of the breathing tube inserted during the surgery. Today I sound as if nothing had happened and am feeling minimal pain, with only a little hoarseness here and there. It's only the second day since removing the parathyroid and can't say what symptoms have gone away, since I was only noticing some depression, difficulty sleeping, and possible loss of energy. Hopefully my alertness, energy, sleeping pattern, and mood will improve in the coming days/weeks as a result of the surgery. I am confident it will.
I would recommend this doctor if anyone is willing to travel to Indianapolis, IN for the surgery. Please contact me with any questions.

Hi, I had parathyroid surgery on Jan. 11, 2010, so this is day four. My surgery was done at the Mayo (St. Mary's Hospital) in Rochester, MN. My surgery was more complicated than usual only because the adenoma was located behind my sternum instead of in the neck. Luckily, they were able to "fish" it out without having to open up my sternum.
My calcium was at 11.8 pre-surgery and dropped down to 8.1, so now it's too low. My surgeons (Thompson, Fatima, Quillo) told me it'd take about a week for the calcium levels to stabilize. The day of surgery when the levels were normal, I felt what it will be like once they are stable again: clear thinking, no joint or bone pain, no depression. My major symptoms post-surgery are vomiting (I can't tolerate pain meds very well, so hardly take any), some tingling in fingers, and 10 lbs. of edema. Anyone else have so much bloating post-surgery? Is this normal? I haven't been able to eat much because of the vomiting, but what I have had is soup and saltines. Could the salt alone do that?

Boy, you did have a rough surgery! I am so sorry that you are experiencing all the problems. It has been a year since my surgery and I don't think I have heard of anyone having a problem with bloating. Could it be due to the pain meds? Have you asked your doctors about it? Your surgeons should be accessible for any questions you have and you shouldn't hesitate to contact them.
Are you taking lots of calcium? I was told to take 2000 mg twice a day after surgery and I still take 1000mg twice a day. Osteoporosis was a main symptom for me and it will be another year before they repeat the bone scan but I hope the calcium is being replaced.
It does take a while for your body to adjust after surgery but your symptoms are unusual. Please contact your doctors if you haven't already. Don't try to handle things yourself. I hope you feel better soon. mass

My mom had parathyroid surgery just 3 weeks ago and I am concerned as her voice is still at a whisper. Her surgery did last over 5 hours due to the surgeon finding only 2 parathyroids which were larger than normal and her calcium not dropping as he expected. When leaving the hospital her calcium level was 9.6. I am curious if anyone else had a whispering voice this long after surgery and if so did your voice return to normal? How long did it take? When the surgeon spoke to my dad and I after surgery, he did say he did not injure her vocal nerves. Is this normal?

If your mom's surgery lasted nearly five hours, I assume that she had general anesthesia and a breathing tube in her throat. It is possible that her throat is still irritated from the breathing tube. I had no discomfort from my surgery but my throat was irritated for a while. I drank lots of cold drinks and kept talking to a minimum. I guess it could also be irritated from their hunting for the parathyroids. Did they protect the vocal cords during surgery? I think her voice will be okay - sometimes things take a while.
Who was the surgeon? You should be able to contact him to ask questions.
Hope your mom is feeling better otherwise. mass

Thank you so much for your reply. You are correct ~she did have general anesthesia and a breathing tube. We were not told that her vocal chords were protected only that he did not damage her vocal chords. She has her 3 week check up this week and has questions to ask him. I did call in a week after surgery, for her, to ask if there was anything she should be doing or not doing and the nurse indicated that minimal talking is a must. She is writing many notes!!! Mom said the other day, "I just would have thought that after 2 1/2 weeks, I would be able to make some sort of sound." I have to agree.
Other than her voice she is feeling great. She too did not have any pain with the surgery.
Thanks Again

Let me know how the check up goes. It must be very frustrating to be unable to talk. I was able to talk but got hoarse if I talked much - that lasted for maybe 2-3 weeks. Glad your mom feels better. mass

Check up was today. Not the greatest news. Her calcium is back up and as the surgeon said the night of her surgery, he is suspecting another parathyroid(since he couldn't find the other two)could possibly be in her chest. I have read online at (anyone ever heard of this?) that one should be concerned when a surgeon tells you this(parathyroid in chest)? He will do MRI to make certain before he would operate. He also indicated her voice possibly could never come back. However, when she was speaking today, her voice ame out slightly stronger at times. Perhaps she was trying harder.
I don't know what to think. I know she feels frustrated and said she is more concerned about her "hiding parathyroid" than anything.

I understand your disappointment and frustration. You're right - parathyroids aren't always where they're supposed to be. Did the surgeon use the radio probe? I wanted a surgeon who would use it because we didn't know where the adenoma was. Most people with parathyroid concerns find that website- that's why they call it that - but I am not a fan of Dr Norman.
I don't know about the calcium being high. I know it takes a while for things to adjust - I've heard of a year or more. My PTH was high 6 months after surgery but on the last test it was the lowest ever. I think I would get a second opinion before consenting to another surgery. Also, I would want to be very very confident in my surgeon before having that sort of procedure. Vocal cords do get damaged occasionally in spite of all the precautions but it is a rare occurrence. Does your mom feel better than before the surgery? Most people have hyperparathyroidism for years before it is discovered and the body has been out of balance all that time so it takes a while to get back to normal. Best wishes to you and your mom. mass

Hi all,
Could any of you who've had the MIRP, tell me what the approximate total cost was? And who/where you had your surgery please?
I don't have insurance and that's why I'm asking... I need an idea of what I'm looking at financially. Any advice is welcome.
Thanks!

I had surgery with Dr Larian in Los Angeles. There are a number of variables that can affect the cost. I suggest that you call him, and any other surgeon you are considering, and discuss the fees. No doctor's office should have a problem with that. mass

Thanks. I just want to approach the whole monetary issue right for the start. If there's a way to find out if the office does any pro-bono work, if they'll let me pay what they actually collect from insured patients providers (as apposed to what's billed), etc. I am afraid to just ask 'what does it cost' because there might be a better way to start the whole conversation. I guess I'm just saying I don't want to put my foot in my mouth.
Do you know if we're talking more than 5k and less than 10K? Or more than 10K?
Thanks all,
