Pudendal Neuralgia?  I am a 50 year old nurse, who has been suffering increased pelvic/rectal pain and pressure.  I thought it was from endometriosis and adenomyosis which I know I have had for a couple years.  It is getting worse since I have begun to go through menopause and have been considering getting a hysterectomy, but am concerned as I read on this blog and others, that hysterectomy didn't always correct the pain/pressure and sometimes these symptoms didn't even begin until after hysterectomy.  In doing some more research came across this site which seems to describe some of my symptoms and maybe some of you other women as well.  Check it out!

Pudendal Neuralgia Symptoms

***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***Please read our Terms of Use

"The main symptom of pudendal neuralgia (PN) and pudendal nerve entrapment (PNE) is pain in one or more of the areas innervated by the pudendal nerve or one of its branches. These areas include the rectum, anus, urethra, perineum, and genital area. In women this includes the clitoris, mons pubis, vulva, lower 1/3 of the vagina, and labia. In men this includes the penis and scrotum. But often pain is referred to nearby areas in the pelvis. The symptoms can start suddenly or develop slowly over time. Typically pain gets worse as the day progresses and is worse with sitting. The pain can be on one or both sides and in any of the areas innervated by the pudendal nerve, depending on which nerve fibers and which nerve branches are affected. The skin in these areas may be hypersensitive to touch or pressure (hyperesthesia or allodynia).

Possible symptoms include burning, numbness, increased sensitivity, electric shock or stabbing pain, knife-like or aching pain, feeling of a lump or foreign body in the vagina or rectum, twisting or pinching, abnormal temperature sensations, hot poker sensation, constipation, pain and straining with bowel movements, straining or burning when urinating, painful intercourse, and sexual dysfunction – persistent genital arousal disorder (genital arousal without desire) or the opposite problem - loss of sensation."

(The site goes on with more info that is very interesting!  Good luck my fellow sufferers!)

Hi there it may be the nerves that go down into your pelvis I have that problem one day its good next day really painful. The tingling in your fingers may be that you have a pinched nerve in either your shoulder or neck.

Terri. I realize that your post was from last year but just wondering what the outcome was? Having same symptoms. Been to gp and gyn. Having a lap and d&c in a couple of weeks. Doing all the right things except stupidly searching the net for answers (impatient). Anyway, if you even get this, let me know what happened. Thanks !!

You know I hate it when people post "I know EXACTLY what it is!!" Bull c**p, are you a doctor? If I was you I would go to a doctor ASAP, it could be a number of things and pain in your vagina AND anus could signal cancer! Go to see a doctor and worry about the $$ later, money will not matter if your not around to see your daughter grow up.

I have had the same issue for years. I used to describe it as anal cramps to my mom, who at first thought it was my cycle. After a while realizing it was something else doctor visits began, fast forward and nothing has been found to be wrong. And my gynecologist says its normal pelvic pain that a lot of woman suffer from. I guess we just can't catch a break. I'm trying to get over an episode right now, so good luck to you all as well.

Regarding pudendal neuralgia and other pelvic issues.

I had this for years after a fall- did any of you fall at all? Usually after some event you start clenching muscles in your pelvis, basically doing a 24/7 kegal. This can damage or pinch nerves eventually- and people have mentioned pelvic PT is very helpful.

I ended up being diagnosed with a neurological disorder called tethered cord syndrome. Your cord is stuck and starts impacting your bladder etc.

And yes, you could have both! For people with urinary issues, I would suggest an MRI. I was told after my diagnosis that any bladder changes should be investigated as a spinal cord issue, because the lower part of your cord controls the nerves of the bladder.

If you have had an MRI recently, have an expert look at it, don't just go by the report! I was misdiagnosed for years because of a report (and don't think any lawyer will take that case- they won't) have a neurosurgeon specializing in spinal cord disorders look at your MRI disk if you have any back pain and urinary issues.

Go to PT for pelvic pain - even if your muscles are not tight they could recommend some self treatment or biofeedback etc.

There are also medications you can insert into the vagina for pelvic pain/spasms such as a compounded valium/baclofen suppository.

Do get help though, keep knocking on doors and have your pelvic therapist recommend a good doctor to work with, this stuff does not get better, only worse, and you are teaching your body to live in a pain cycle.

You may have a hernia. I did. It's rare in women. I figured it out myself and the doctor confirmed it. My Gyn with testing couldn't diagnose it. It's rare in women but I think it is under diagnosed. I had an inguneal hernia in my right pelvic area. And there's a likelihood of having one on each side even if you have no symptoms. . It's repairable. It took me months of testing and searching to figure out. I had stabbing pain at climax. Aching the rest of the time.  The hernia can be very small in women almost undetectable because of our body type but small hernias are more painful. Hope this helps.

Ladies, I have experienced much of what has been described here.  My trouble started when I was doing an inner thigh exercise using too much weight.  It felt as if my entire insides were going to fall out of my vagina.  I was also experiencing burning, stabbing pains in my vulva.  I have been to every doctor and therapist I could think of.  All they would do for me is give me pills to mask the pain.  Finally I decided to speak with my chiropractor about it.  She  examined my pelvic bone and found it misaligned.  Believe it or not, your pelvic bone CAN be adjusted!  The first time she did it, the pain was unbelievable, but I felt IMMEDIATE relief.  The stabbing, burning pain in my vulva was gone and the pressure was gone as well.  I was told that it will take a while before the adjustment will hold, so I am going once a week to be adjusted.  I know that many of you are rolling your eyes at the thought of a chiropractor, but let me tell you, it has helped tremendously!!!
