Hello! I am 45 years old female and I suffer from epilepsy. As I am gradually approaching to the perimenopausal period I was wondering what effects can perimenopause have on me and the seizures. Thx in advance!!!!

If you had menstrually-related seizures before ( in your reproductive years ), then you are more likely to have them in the perimenopausal period as well. But seizures are more common in the fifties. In perimenopause levels of estrogen and progesterone decreases, ovulation stops and becomes is infrequent. Only little progesterone is being made during perimenopause. As progesterone inhibits seizures, so their lack can trigger seizures as estrogen is the one who promotes them. If you want to know more, you should talk to your neurologist or neuroendocrine specialist.
