Wow, I'm surprised that so many others are going throught this. It's been happening to me daily for the past month or so. But, it is the strangest thing...not painful..just an eerie kind of sensation as has been described by others. I couldn't really explain it until I've read some of the descriptions here. Mine is located on the left side of my upper back, and the parasite description seems so real. It's like something is crawling around in my back. i don't have any sores or bruising. I haven't experienced any accidents and have no outward signs that anything is wrong. But, I've thought about going to the doctor as well although I just don't think he'll tell me anything, just write out a prescription. I don't want to be taking any medicine just because you can't figure out what's happening. I think I'll just pray and hope it goes away.

I tried the prayer route, the numbing creams, exercise, you name it, I tried it. Nothing helped! I started going to a Cervical Chiropractor for neck and shoulder pain and after 5 treatments, the "crazy" running me up the wall sensation is completely gone. My medical doctor nor dermatologist did not know what was causing this. I was told to use Lanacane patches which offered no relief either. If it should return, I'll definitely see my chiropractor alignments again.

Olivia - that is exactly as expected from the messages outlined above. The chrio has released your upper trapezius and probably levator scapulae which has allowed the shoulder blades to relax and take the strain off the lower trapezius. Long term this may not permanently fix it.
As I have mentioned previously I struggled with this tingling sensation for almost 10 years before I realised that upper trap tightness, levator scap tightness and lower trap weakness were causing the issue. The solution is:
1 - strengthen the lower traps with the exercises I have listed previously in earlier posts
2 - stretch the upper trapezius and levator scapula
Trust me this will work for everyone. Try it.

ive had the same feeling in my middle left of my back...next to the spine....its about the size of a quarter and tingles for a few min and then goes away then comes back at random times...after the apst few days it has began to hurt there...its feels like bugs are crawling around, or my skin is being streched

Stretch your upper traps and levator scapula as per my earlier posts. You should notice this relieves the tingling quite quickly. The focus on strengthening your lower trapezius.

If you dont know how to stretch the area out, the best way I have found, esp as I need a hard stretch, is to:
put your left arm up as if you are about to grasp a ladder rung, but face your palm in not out. Grasp your left elbow with your right hand and pull it across your body. To get to the right spot, I bend my left shoulder inwards and stretch my shoulder blade area specifically by moving my left arm around to a straight out, kind of hunched position. You will know immediately when you have got the sweet spot!
I also use a capsaicin cream which just helps to numb the critter-crawling sensation. I have gone through nearly 1 tube, perhaps a months worth, and I havent had a relapse of any significance as yet and it has been a month or two since I stopped. I continue to stretch And sometimes scratch though, so I may need to start the cream again. Prayer wont do a thing. Prayer cant untrap nerves etc, you have to help yourself. But you dont necessarily need to ingest medication, unless it is really, really bad and is stopping you from working or enjoying life, then you might need something like Gabapentin or similar. read what Greg has posted, it is useful, as well as certain creams. Combined, you will, hopefully, find some relief!
Good Luck!

I have the same tingling sensation on the Left center of my back. The strange thing was that it seemed to start at a Zit - and spread around.

My doctors really did not know what it was. Family doc and dermatologist said probably nerve endings irritated. Only thing that has helped is adjustments from cervical chiropractor. I went twice a week for six weeks and the irritation is gone.

+1 here. Only thing I'll say is some people seem to be getting it on the surface of the skin others mention it being deeper. Mine is definitely on the surface, right shoulder blade. Feels like it's coming from a mole I have there but it's a weird sensation so hard to pin point. Gonna go docs this week so will post any updates!

I think that it is possible that this problem has something to do with the sciatic nerve. I was having some sciatic problems before I began having this very same problem. I was told by a nurse that it is possibly dermatitis? Not really sure what that means but thats all I have. I think personally that it is definitely a nerve problem. But I never got an injury in my back. When I got injured it was my pinky on the left side. Which is the same side as my tingling. I think it is just because of how our posture is when we are sitting. Maybe putting the wrong kind of pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Problem Solved!!! So I had this exact problem; tingling/numbness like your back is asleep always on the left side by my bra strap in one isolated spot. It would occur mostly when I was sitting at work in a chair but the odd other times. I wouldn't be doing anything strenuous so I couldn't pin point the reason it was happening nor had I changed any of my exercise habits. It was uncomfortable more than it was pinful but sometimes it would last so long it would disrupt my day. I googled my symptons and found this site with other people who had similar problems (and was hoping someone would solve the mystery) but in the meantime I went to see a massage therapist (my regular massage therapist moved out of Province). The first girl I saw said I'd have to live with it. I stopped seeing her and went to see another massage therapist my friend recommended and said she was the best. Turns out she was right. She asked me tons of questions and once she started massaging me she found the tingling was originally coming from my left shoulder and left rib area (I hold my tension in my shoulders and traps so I shouldn't have been surprised). Seriously after living with this annoyance for months she fixed it in a one hour massage (sounds easy and too good to be true but I swear it was the solution for me). And here I thought maybe it was due to bad posture, needing a new bed or needing to lose weight and work on strengthening (which I still need to fix all of) however all it took was her to find the right tight muscle spot where the nerve was being 'trapped' due to adhesions and I have not had the tinglinging in my back since (I still see her once a month as I have coverage and she rocks). I highly recommend finding a seasoned Massage Therapist who will take the time to isolate the problem. Hope this helps!
