That being said, I have been having a dull ache under my tongue and under my jaw right where it meets my neck for about a week now. I was fearing the worst, and it still lurks in the back of my mind, but then I found this thread with so many similar stories. I just went to the bathroom to look, and what do you know? Small whitehead-looking bump on the skin that connects my tongue to the floor of my mouth. Right where it flares out into (what I suspect are) ducts for the submandibular salivary gland.
I wonder if anyone else who has had a blocked salivary gland has had this same pain as I have.

Can anyone tell me why eating cherries or strawberries would cause pain related to this problem? I have the white pimple under my tongue right on the vein looking portion. It appeared about a month ago. At first it hurt, but it does not hurt now. When I swallow sometimes, it hurts. It hurts primarily when the saliva ducts get clogged.
The swollen saliva ducts started years ago. I drink water and massage behind my ear and along my jaw and the pain subsides. One time I had to get an antibiotic. About a month ago, the left side of my jaw was so swollen, I went to the ER.
I just noticed a week or so ago that when I eat cherries and today strawberries, it hurts from the bottom of my jaw to my ear on my left side, my question is, why would cherries or strawberries cause such a painful reaction?

Thanks to these posts i went to see my doctor today.
About 3 weeks ago my lymph gland on the right side of my neck, under my jawline swelled up to a rather large size. It made eating uncomfortable and i felt like i had an ulcur deep at the rear of my tounge, also on the rhs. I went to the doctors and he prescribed me a course of antibiotics thinking i may have Glandular feaver or an infection, and after about 5 days my glands went down, but not completely. Eating wasnt that much of an issue so i pretty much ignored it.. until last night.
Last night while entertaining i was drinking fragelico and lime, built on ice, its rather refreshing... the lime takes the sweetness away leaving a rather nice hazlenut drink. While drinking these, my gland once again swelled considerably, but this time, i felt something under my tounge. I went into the bathroom and looking into the mirror i noticed a white pimple like object on my salivary gland. I also noted that if i massaged my swallen lymph gland i could feel my salivary gland. I went to eat some food which was very uncorfortable and i noted that my gland in my neck swelled even more. Fearing the worse, i looked online and found a number of horror stories. This particular thread however contained some good, and some misleading information, but having said that, it also has more accurate information than other bits i had found. The best bit of advice was see your doctor.
The truth of it all is this.
The 'pimple' on the salivary gland is the blockage, or stone as some have refered it as. How do i know this? easy - my doctor removed it today. Mine was about the size of a grain of rice, and there was no pain when the doctor removed it. The swelling is caused by the blocked salivary gland, and in the case of me, as well as Cathy Moore-Coleman, lime, fruits and such cause saliva stimulation hence, why it's worse when we eat these foods. lucky for us however, is that stimulation caused the blockage, or stone to move closer to the surface. With some, its not so easy. The symptoms are the same, however, it usually takes an ultra sound to find the blockage, and surgery to remove it.
The problem does not correct itself. You will find certain foods agrivate it when saliva stimulation is high and the symptoms them become more apparent. These symptoms will re-occur if you do not have the blockage, or stone removed.
I do not know the cause, nor do i pretent to be a doctor. I do know however that when it is removed, the discomfort leaves immediately, and the inflammed gland (lymph) begins to shrink. The drawback is there is a foul taste while whatever is left after the 'stone' is removed.
My recommendation is to see a doctor as only a real diagnosis will truely indicate what the problem is, but i do hope my post leaves some of you feeling a little less concerned of what the problem is and you decide to go see your local gp.
I do have some advice if your still unsure and that is, bite a lemon. It will cause the salivary gland to produce more saliva, and it will then cause the salivary gland to swell, as well as the lymph gland in your neck. It is a good indicator that you too have a blocked salivary gland and will help point the doctor in the right dirrection as my doctor did not even think of this until i mentioned my swallen salivary gland and the white, pimple like spot on that very gland.

Thank you so much for your post! It helped tremendously. I have been dealing with this for about 5 years. I had to go to the ER once because it hurt and was so swollen. I have had antibotics as well because of the swellen.
Last question, you mention you went to your doctor. Is a ENT specialist the best doctor to go to?

I had exactly this - a salivary gland stone! During the day it just popped up out of nowhere and made it painful to swallow. I couldn't eat anything except applesauce (and even that hurt to get down) and was stuck to drinking water, milk and tea. I was too afraid to pop it so I left it alone as much as I could.
The second day I had it I made hot chocolate as hot as I could stand (I'd been drinking the tea at lukewarm); it was cool enough so it didn't burn my mouth, but hot enough that holding it over the sore salivary gland stung. Every gulp I took, I held under my tongue until it cooled down. I repeated this until the hot chocolate wasn't hot anymore. This caused the sore to come to a head. The next day I didn't have to poke or pinch the sore at all; speaking in a conversation caused it to pop out on its own!
I had the stone/sore for two days total. My suggestion? If you've got a salivary gland stone that makes it painful to swallow your own saliva or food, burn it with a hot beverage without burning the rest of your mouth! With any luck, it'll come out on its own just like mine!

Oh my Lord, I had the same thing for the past two days. It was awfull, the pain I had when I tried to eat just a simple cracker. I finally saw a white head under my tongue where my tongue meets the bottom and got freaked out!!! And I know this is crazy!! but I took a tweezer and grabbed it and it was a little tiny stone!! Some blood came out and then all this saliva came and kept coming out. I had swelling in my neck and the bottom of my mouth. Its felt awful. Instant relief though when I got it out. and swelling went away in an hour. It must have been a cloged saliva duct that what I gathered from the research I did.
My advice would be if you can not grab it, go to the ER because my throat was closing and if I didnt get myself It would have been an awful out come. My throat was closing by the hour. It was amazing to me that something small could causE so much damage.

I was just reading about this because i was having all of the same symptoms. I went ahead and popped what was under my tongue (pimple/whitehead looking thing), and it didnt come out like a grain of rice or a marble like most of you said. It was just like popping a pimple. This was right next my salvaic gland. After doing so I rinsed my mouth with salt water a few times. Should I not have popped it? Is it something other than what everyone seems to have in this discussion forum? keep in mind my right gland by my neck is swollen, so the symptoms were very similar. Some input would be greatly appreiciated (especially since im a little freaked out!).

Anything new happen since you popped yours? I'm kind of scared too, as you said that you were.
Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.
