The pituitary gland has major control over secretion of hormones in the body. It is situated near the crossing point of the two vision nerves. The normal pituitary gland produces important hormones for the adrenal gland, thyroid gland, sexual organs; growth, sugar metabolism, cell growth, and lactation. Pituitary adenomas are benign tumors of the pituitary gland, usually slow growing. Pituitary tumors can also be divided into functioning, which produce hormones in large amounts and non-functioning tumors, which do not produce significant amounts of hormones.
