Am I the only one in the world suffering terribly after my hemorroidectomy? It was performed on an emergency basis when I had to go to the ER as I was suffering and in terrible pain. I had it done 1 1/2 weeks ago and spent 3 days in the hospital. When I came home, I was in a "fog" from all the meds. and had developed a bladder infection from the catherther.
Since then 2 small BM's and 1 normal one yesterday, Sunday, that sent me thru the roof - cold sweats, nauseous, screaming, etc. After, the pain was so bad that the only relief I could get (and pardon my graphic description) was to wrap crushed ice in an old facecloth and put it up there. I'm absolutely terrified of the next movement. I've been taking Fiber Drink - 2 a day, Colace 2 a day and eating Raisin Bran Cereal. Drinking lots of fluids - all as recommended by Dr. and hospital.
I called Dr. office today for follow-up appt. (tomorrow) and asked if there wasn't something they could prescribe to numb the area after bowel movement but they said no - just sitz baths, etc.
Well I've been searching on the internet and, lo and behold, there are a ream of medications (mostly by scrip) that can be obtained!!!!!!! Why am I being told "no"!!!!!
I can't continue to exist this way - period!!!!!
Anybody doing as badly as I or am I just a "wuss"?
Two yrs ago I was operated on for a Malignant Melanoma on my lower back. Also both groin areas were opened to remove lymph nodes.
I literally "sailed" thru that - was great by 3-4 days and never any pain.
In this day and age, I can't for the life of me understand why there isn't a pain free way of doing this procedure - it just makes me soooooo mad!!!
If I never have another BM I'll be happy (not really but that's how I feel)
Any comments or suggestions WELCOME

Hi Bayview,
No you arent the only one suffering. I had mine done (3 internal one removed) on the 2nd August due to years of sever bleeding (somtimes i could just bend over to pick something up and i'd have blood pouring down my legs).
I was meant to go home the following day but i ended up staying 3 nights in hospital. While in there, they were giving me paracetamol (4hourly) and tramadol 50mg(6 hourly). this did not work at all and i had to INSIST on something stronger. Eventually they started giving me morphine via injection. b4 i knew it, they stopped giving it to me and started to give me Endone (morphine tablets) which did not help much at all. i dont know why they stopped the injections after day 2, but I got the impression that the hospital thought i was there to get off on the drugs??!!!! Well, lets see what those nurses BEG 4 if they ever have a Hemmroidectomy!!!!
I'd had enough of not getting much help so i told them i wanted to go home (i planned to go to my local Dr or back to the surgeon). They wouldn't let me leave untl i had a BM! I did a very little one, and it was the MOST PAINFUL thing i have ever been through.
hospital sent me home with panadiene forte and tramadol 50g. it was the worst thing they could have doen because panadiene forte has codiene. DO NOT let any doctor give you medicine with codiene. it will block you up and if you think it is painful now, it is 100 times worse when you are constipated.
I have since been put on Tramadol 150m (slow release pain meds and does not cause constipation) & normacol plus. Tramadol helps but then once i have a BM i feel like death warmed up again.
You are NOT a wuss. My surgeon warned me that this is one of the worst, most painful surgeries that a person can go through.
I would go and see another dr if your dr isnt giving you painkillers. it is unthinkable the pain you are going thru without pain medication!!!! locally - try xylocaine or lignocaine. keep up baths and fibre and honestly though, i am doing all of that but i am still in great pain.let me know how u r going.

Try Celebrex (celecoxib) which can be obtained over
the net itself. One or two a day for a couple of weeks
is quite safe.
Antiinflammatory enzymes tablets such as Papase
(papain), the papaya enzyme, also help. These can
be found in any drugstore or over the net. A better
one is serrapeptase, the silkworm enzyme, which
can be found in health food stores. Two or three tabs
a day should be enough.
For sitz baths, the usual table salt is not very effective.
Use Dead Sea salts, found in any health food store.
You have to use a fairly concentrated amount. Do it at
least 3 times a day.

Hi: Thanks to both of you for your replies/comments and hints!!! It is always reassuring to know there are others "out there" that can comprehend the pain and agony we are going thru! Unfortunately, family (while they mean well) really only give "lip-service" if you know what I mean. My recovery problem has been exacerabated due to having a handicapped husband who really couldn't do anything to help me other than to provide comfort so it made me feel all the more alone during this awful time.
Happily, here it is day 19 after the surgery and I'm doing better!!! Did I just type that!!!!!! Oh, my goodness - I hope I haven't jinxed anything.
The past two days I was suffering from (of all things) tremendously loose movements! And they were almost as bad as the "normal" ones I had been having all the previous days!!!! Seems anything I ate - went right thru me within 10-15 minutes and I had to make a run for the bathroom.
Yeow!!!!
However whatever happened overnight - today I'm almost pain free and was able to do a few normal things!!!!! Could it be a miracle happened!!!
I'm still leary waiting for the other shoe to drop so to speak but right now I'll accept how decent I'm feeling at this time.
As for meds, I was sent home with oxycontin - didn't touch the pain - called the surgeon - he prescribed percocet - nothing - called again - got oxycontin with tylenol and garapentin (sp?) - still nada. Finally said either give me something OR ELSE! Prescribed Vicodin but have used it sparingly and find only when I took the 2 at a time did they do anything (actually only made me loopy and sleepy but at least that took my mind off the pain.) I'm surprised the Tramodol didn't work as that was the ONLY medication that worked for me in the hospital (after trying 3-4 other meds.) In fact, if I wasn't in such a fog I would have asked the surgeon to prescribe that once I was home - just never, ever thought of it!!!
My prayers are with both of you and I pray that things will get better for both of you soon.
I read these boards daily (as I'm retired) so keep posting and let me know of how your recovery is going!!!!

Well - I went and did it!!! Yep - by posting yesterday by "bragging" how good I felt!!!!
I jinxed it!!!! Woke up this A.M. - had a loose bowel movement then it started AGAIN! Pain, throbbing, etc., etc. etc. - jeez!!!!! Took sitz bath, applied meds (RectaGel HC given by surgeon) - nada, no relief. The only way I was slightly comfortable was by pacing the house - to uncomfortable to sit even though I have several of those egg crate type form cushions!!!! Also took 2 viocodin and 2 ibuprofen but I knew I was in in for it most of the day!! Yes, was miserable most of the day although right now (7:00 P.M.) things have abated somewhat but ............... who the heck knows what tomorrow will bring.
That's the worse part - never knowing what each day will bring - can't plan a darn thing. After 3 weeks of this I'm so darn discourged!!!!!!!
Once thing I'm curious about - what do people eat??? I'm afraid to eat just about ANYTHING so stick to good old soup - sometimes 1/2 a sandwich and drink plenty of fluids (mostly Propel lemon flavored water).
I know enough to stay away from spicy foods and miss my meatballs and homemade Italian gravy!!!
Take care and post re. foods that are O.K. if you know of any!!!

Hi Bayviewer,
I was really happy to hear you were doing much better, but then i read your next msg and i am so sorry you've had a set back.
Regarding food, my surgeon and GP both told me to eat high fibre and normal amounts of all foods (i mean i wouldn't be stuffing myself with chili foods for a while) but I eat normally. I should probably drink more fluids though. My surgeon and doctor both said it's important to eat - firstly for energy and secondly so that i am have regular bm's. Eat, but just drink lots of fluids, normicol and stool softners. I figured that we're in bad enough pain as it is, i dont think we need to miss out on yummy food as well.
Today is my 18th day since surgery and i feel okay - so long as i am taking my meds that is, but i am still struggling with every bowel motion and yesterday i had to go but when i did, i felt that i had to strain really, really hard and i was sore and exhausted afterwards. The other night i thought i would stop taking the endone cos i was feeling pretty ok during the day. Well dumb me! The pain WOKE me up in the middle of the night and i have since decided that my doctor should be the one who should be treating me lol! My doctor did give me script for tramadol 50mg 1-2 tablets, 2-4 times a day. So i want to try that in the next few days. i really hope it works. My husband was telling me he can see a very obvious difference when my meds are working because i move around better etc. The bad thing is that even when i have taken my meds, if i have to have a bm, i am in agony afterwards. i feel like vomiting from the discomfort sometimes and i am not sleeping all that well so i am not only in pain, but exhausted too.
How long did your doctor tell you it would take to heal? I have read some posts that say that they are on their 8th week and up and still arent 100%. i spoke to my surgeon's nurse just then and she said that it really is one of the most horrible surgeries and that 3 week recovery is optimistic and that 6 or so weeks is more realistic.
How are you today? have you gotten over your set back? what do you think caused the loose motion? Do you think it is because you are limiting your solid food intake?
I hope you are better soon.

Hi ILMforEva; Thanks so much for posting! It is so heartening to hear from someone who's kind of in the same predicament as I!!! I'm so sorry to hear you are still having such pain during BM's- I know EXACTLY what you are going through. The only saving grace (so to speak) in my having such loose movements is that the pain is very mild at this point. However, as I previously mentioned, I'm getting truly frustrated in having everything go thru me!!!!!
As for what I'm eating - it's true - I eat very little and I believe it just might be psycological (sp?) as I'm afraid whenever I eat, then I'll have to run for the toilet!!!!! I had been taking each day - Fibre Drink and Colace twice a day so I'm wondering if that's to much. I've eliminated the Fibre Drink and only am taking Colace twice a day now to see if that helps. One good thing is I DO drink plenty of fluids.
I love Propel Lemon flavored water so I drink at least 3-4 16 oz. bottles of that a day - so I'm not short-changing myself on fluids.
Prior to having the hermorrhoidectomy I was a good eater (and my figure shows it!). I really never ate breakfast (sometimes a bagel, etc.) and for lunch 1/2 sandwich. We always had a good supper and then it was non-stop after that - usually just JUNK food!!!! I love jelly beans and would go thru quite a few handfuls as well my bedtime snack (while reading) was Cheetos!!!! Oh, also Ice Cream - always had a large spoonful each evening So you can see I had a healthy appetite.
Now because of the constant loose movements, I haven't had any of the junk stuff!!!!
My surgeon never ever educated me as to what/what not to eat after the procedure - just that I'd have incredible pain for about 3 weeks - Boy was he on the mark there!!!! Real nice of him, huh?
Well I've got an appt. with him on Thursday and needless to say if I'm still having these "loose" movements 3-4 times a days - questions, questions will be asked.
Hope you improve more and more each day.
Keep in touch as I will also.

Hi All; Just wanted to post an update. Here it is 4 weeks to the day of the hemorroidectomy and thankfully I'm doing better. Can't say I'm 100% but much, much improved over last week. I'm starting to produce small stools (without the pain!) but I'm certainly NOT back to normal.
My worse time seems to be in the morning - I awake about 6:00 A.M. to urinate then when I go back to bed the grumbling starts and within 10 minutes I'm up and running to the bathroom. From then on for the next few hours - I'm in there - usually kind of loose but some small soft stools.
It usually abates about 11:00 A.M. then I'm pretty good for the rest of the day. Just within the past week or so, I've ventured out to do small errands as I'm scared stiff I'll get caught short and have to run to the toilet and I'm not one to use public restrooms!!! My other problem is I get the "feeling" like I have to move my bowels but I'm not sure if it is gas or the real thing so I'm hesitate to "push"!!!!! I'd be mortified if I messed myself even though I wear two sanitary pads (just in case)!!!!!
I went to the surgeon on Thursday and he checked and had to remove 1 stitch and it's surprising what a difference that made! I had "passed" a couple of stitches prior to that but could still feel one when I applied the ointment to my rectum, which he said is not uncommon.
Asked him about diet, etc. and he said eat what I feel comfortable with.
I am starting to get my appetite back (here comes the weight I lost!) but am eating small amounts. I really would like to see a normal stool but as the surgeon explained it - my digestive system has to get back to normal , etc. and that could take a couple of weeks. He also said to restart taking fibre drink once a day along with the colace. Soooooooooo
yes, progress is being made. I thank God every minute of the day that the pain and agony is GONE. I'll put up with the small stools, etc. until my system adjust accordingly. I truly have to say what I went through surely tested my faith.
My best wishes for a continued recovery to all of you STILL having problems.
I intend to continue reading the post to see how things are progressing

Sounds like you could improve your diet. Cereal, bread, mash, etc. No point just having the fibre drink you need to combine it with eating some bulk for big soft stools you can push out easily.
I had the surgery one month ago and i totally understand and feel what you have said . i was given pain medications toradol and hydrocodone.I first took the toradol for three days with taking alot of fluids and eating a lot of prunes i was able to move y bowel on the third day with moderate difficulty, but starting on the third day i took the hydrocodone every four hours for pain and that started my worst agony and misery i want to move my bowel but i cannot i know i need to but it wont come out you should not strain your afraid that the stitches will give way the pain is ther its the worst feeling so on the third day that i dont have bowel movement(6days after the surgery) Icalled my MD and finally she prescrbed me senokot, i took 2 tablets and it works well, Thank God. and so i sopped taking the hydrocodne and just take xtra strenght tylenol for pain. My MD was alittle mad bec I did not take the Fiber One cereal she told me but i also took high fiber diet But my point is What ever is the advantage of not giving the laxative it is not worth compare d to the misery of any patient. If a patient is taking pain meds with codeine it affects the peristalsis and so no matter how high is your diet with fiber you still cannot move your boweland so you need a laxative at that point in time, for one to two days at least.
I am at home now still recovering from day surgery to remove very severly bleeding hemmeroid. My recheck is tomorrow and I cant waite I do believe I either have a bladder infection or UTI which is getting worse by the minute!! The recovery of this surgery is the worst!! I have pain meds with codene which have bound me up so I need to drink Mineral Oil and take Milk of Magnesia dailey and hopes that when it kicks in I can make it to the toilet!!! When I do the pain is so great seems like im back to square one!! Ihave to take a clean white face cloth and put it in my mouth between my teeth and chomp on it while doing bm to keep from chipping and breaking all my teeth the pain is so severe!!!! I have no idea how long this will last or when I will start feeling somewhat normal. This is the worst surgery I have ever experienced.!!!
Ok, I wen through a two band internal and one external Hemorroid being cut out on Halloween. It's wednesday afternoon. I feel like I am on a road straight to h___. My fears of pain are now realized. My Surgeon originally thought I could return to work as a CNA on Monday following the surgery. WHat a completely off prognosis that was. Now I am ordered off for at least another week, the pain is out of control and I am scared to eat, but know I have to. The BM's have been there and I am taking the Vicodin. But I drink lots of water, and take the fiber lax once a day. Now my doc didn't think the colace was the choice right now. But I am going, and when I do ... OH MY GOD> I scream out, moan, sweat, in the tub, out of the tub... I am in misery and feel like there must be something wrong with my healing... IT"S GOING SOOO SLOW. I don't heal this slow ever.. I am mainly a healthy person... THEN WORK gives me hell on top of it... As if this process isn't the worst ever.. That's just the top.. And I am a great worker, top employee .... that's the suckiest part. Anyway, back to pain land.
Any feedback will be read... and appreciated.

I completely can understand what you are going through. I had my surgery (two internal ones removed) on October 28th. I am a teacher and my doc said I could be back to work on Monday November3rd and even complete all of my parent conferences after school. What a joke that was!!!!!!!! I have been to h--- and back these past couple of weeks. I had to cancel all my conferences and tomorrow will be my first day back November 10th even though I am not sure that is the best thing, I have no more sick time left. I had to return to the ER 4 days after surgery for excruciating pain and vomiting. I had no idea what I was in for and I have had c sections and a back surgery and this was by far the worst thing I have ever gone through. I am terrified to eat and I have been making myself get loose stools Milk of magnesia so I don;t have to suffer through the pain. Will i ever be normal again???
Yes, it does get better with time. A lot of it's mind over matter. When you''re attempting a BM, think of the Beatles song, "It's Getting Better All the Time", and just repeat that to yourself. Also think about all the water you've been drinking and how much easier it's making this experience.
As bizarre as that might sound, it works. Recovery is a Psychological over Physiological process. There's a lot of info your Dr. probably didn't give you, so you have to find out about the pain on your own.
Thank God there are forums like this available to all of pain sufferers.
Good luck, and, you'll see, it's all worth it!

Good luck, and, you'll see, it's all worth it!
I know this is a very old thread but thought I'd just add some information I wish I had earlier..
I just had 'the works' hemorrhoidectomy 8 weeks ago and I too understand the pain. After 3 days of unbearable BM pain I was recommended to take mineral oil (which you can get at any pharmacy reasonably cheap), which essentially turns your BM to oil and it just flows on out.
I started on 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/4 cup at night and boy was it night and day in terms of pain.
It went from a 12/10 pain to a bearable 4/10 within 24 hours.
Down side is that you get very little notice when it's about to hit you, so don't go too far from the loo :-)
Also, after your BM I used baby wipes to clean up the oily residue and the moisture is soothing.
2 things to note:
1. My doctor told me that while it's good for the first few days (although he hadn't thought to use it before) that after a week or so you really need to get off it because your anus needs to stretch again. If you leave it too late, your butt will heal too small and you'll have discomfort for a lot longer.
2. Doctor also told me that most non-ibuprofen based pain medication will also draw moisture out of your bowel, so there's a higher chance it will lead to slight constipation, harder stool and therefore more pain. He said to take it as long as I felt I needed to, but the sooner I could just go to ibuprofen the better because at least that will help reduce the swelling.
