hi everyone, i dont know if this thread is still alive but i found it because i am day 11 of my tonsillectomy and i have this horrible lump in my throat as well. it feels absolutely horrible. at night i have been dreaming that someone is choking me and i wake up to find it is just the pain of my throat.
what can we do for this? i need a remedy i cant live like this, constantly feeling like there is this is mucus lump in the back of my throat and like i cant breather. i would almost rather have the stinging pain of the first days post-tonsillectomy than this constant lump.

I am a 48 year old male and had a recurrent sore throat for over 6 years, I had every test in the book, including sleep apnea and that tube down the throat test. Nothing positive as an indication to why my throat was always sore. Due to the lack of diagnosis, a tonsillectomy was floated out there by the GP and Doctors I saw.
After a further two years of different super healthy diets and anti inflammatory foods I still kept getting sore throats. I relented and asked the doctor to refer me for a Tonsillectomy.
Having mentioned the word Tonsillectomy to my friends and family seem to bring out the horror stories and how bad it was going to be. Oddly I never heard any benefits to the procedure. After all it is a massive disruption to the lymphatic system and from the minimal research I had done, none of it looked great. So I took the stance best not to look.
Incidentally my father had his tonsils (cut and stitch) out when he was 43 and he (According to him) had one day of pain and was eating dry toast on day two and was eating normally with no pain on day three. So I had a lot to live up to.
The doctor who was doing the procedure was going to perform the same style of procedure my father had so I was hoping mine Op was going to go well.
Typically the day of the procedure, my doctor was not available to do it so I got someone else who did a completely different procedure with cauterisation.
I'll never know if the older style procedure was better than what they did to me, but whatever this Doctor did the results are not pleasant.
I had my tonsils out 5 days ago.
Day 1 & 2:-
Mild to moderate throat discomfort and no ear pain. x4 Enlarged Uvula and very flat looking. My jaw muscles ached but suppressed due to the General Anaesthetic wearing off. Speaking was difficult and the sinus mucus (which keeps running down the back of my throat to choke me) is a constant bug bare and causing total lack of sleep.
oddly, burping and flatulence was a new thing on me. though put this down to the new cavity my throat (lack of tonsils) had which caused the extra air down my throat when swallowing liquids.
As I am allergic to opiate based drugs I was prescribed Ibuprofen and Paracetamol.
I had prescribed myself a protein rich diet and ice cubes. I am on a sugar free, and generally, a vegetarian diet. So hoped that this would help recovery, more than my age.
Day 3:-
The effectiveness of the 'over the counter' drugs was less affective.
Mild ear pain started, along with a stinging throat. I was drinking copious amounts of water, gargling with salt water, regularly before and after meals.
My diet consisted of watery porridge, chicken soup with pre soaked rice biscuits.
The mucus was running down the back of my throat so much I kept choking. Drooling when attempting to sleep was also a weird side affect.
I went of for a long walk in the local forest and actually slept a whole hour that night.
My anaesthetic constipation ended today of which I was thankful for.
Day 4:-
The ear pain started in earnest. I would categorise this as severe. The lingual nerve is so close to the area operated on it had not occurred to me that that my ears would be affected in such a drastic way with referred pain. The sensation was a throbbing pulsating pain which at some points I could barely stand because the pain was so severe. I forced my super saw jaw muscles to work by eating more solid foods. Sourdough Toast with peanut butter, thicker porridge, cooked vegetables. Tons of water, salt water gargling and teeth brushing.
The toast eating was a painful experience and only ate one slice.
The pain and stinging on the back of my throat was constant, only helped with ibuprofen and to a lesser extent paracetamol.
Gargling with warm salt water helped, but only after drug medication. Before hand it felt like someone had dipped my throat in acid. Maybe a slight over dramatisation of the immediate pain, but it was testy.
My body is still retaining extra water due to the stress my throat has had so feel a little bloated.
Day 5:-
My birthday. Not the best present.
Lack of sleep due to excessive, chocking mucus did not help. I now have a spit jar. Eeew.
Dry irritated throat and ear ache beyond belief was helped with the drugs again.
I am sitting down the thicker non milked porridge and today am going to attempt to eat a normal meal, something with fish, sushi or mundane like ham egg and chips.
I'm off off for another long walk to hopefully reinvigorate whats left of my lymphatic system and hopefully will aid in a little more sleep and help my digestion.
We will see how it goes.
Good luck to anyone electing to have this procedure done.
It is certainly not to be taken lightly.

Day 10 was the turning point. No more pain!! Yey.
On day 11 now and it feels like the day before my surgery. Mild sore throat.
Still can't sleep on my back due to the phlegm (I kept choking) but at least I can now eat normally.
I bought a MADs device, as a temporary measure, so I could sleep.
That has helped immensely.
Onwards and upwards.

Is it normal after tonsil removal to feel a choking sensation? My child just had this procedure done to him a few hours ago.
