I'm 18 and I got my tonsils out the day before the last poster (12/18/06). I'm pretty good for the most part regarding pain right now, but that's just in comparison to the previous days. I guess I'm coming on to day 7 and I know days 7-10 are supposed to be pretty harsh. I'm crossing my fingers for no bleeding! I've been experiencing a general taste loss though. I feel sick to my stomach just thinking about some foods that I used to enjoy A LOT. Everything tastes very bland to me, and will apparently taste this awful for months (from what I've researched so far). I haven't completely lost taste, but it's pretty unbearable to be sick of all foods. It's more like a distortion of taste. Nothing tastes the same-insead, it tastes horrible! I hope this will all go away soon, and wish I could have post-poned my surgery atleast until AFTER Christmas dinner! :-(
Happy Holidays!

:-( Hello everyone I have been out of town can you tell? Well, I am catching up here and there is so much to talk about! For the person that wrote in wishing you would have waited til AFTER christmas-yes I agree and also wish I would have eaten something the day before my surgery like I had wanted to and didn't b/c I got tooo busy and didn't eat from 11:00am -the day before my surgery and then well, you know it was days that you don't really eat but survive with what they give you to sustain you. By the way-throwing up is not really a good thing! Try not to and yes I can relate with the mucous-I still have it and am always coughing up this stuff and theres not really a conveninent time to do so-if you know what I mean? But try not to throw up if you can help it at all--there is such tender skin back there and they cauterized it and it's best that we don't cause any more irritation to it than necessary--I coughed up so bad too and wished I hadn't of but can't remember why I thought that? UGH! Anyway no major problem but anyway, just try to baby it best you can. OKie dokie? Anyway, the taste for me has taken a turn again and not for the better, I did enjoy the oniions in the "dressing" from the turkey dinner and the pumpkin pie. but that was IT! I have passed the point of disgust and am able to tolerate now...but NOT ENJOY! We went to Red Lobster (One of my fav-that i can kinda taste) Well, it didn't have any taste on sunday when we went and I felt like it was a waste! I am suprised at this b/c I really thought we were making progress. I can say it is not getting worse! That is a blessing in itself. I wonder if people don't write back b/c they are mearly tolerating this new plot in life and adding it as a chapter in the book of life. Being content or something I don't know or maybe they will feel like they are bragging if they tell us the "good news" for them and little do they know that we would be soo happy for them and this would give us hope! People can't believe this and my doc said to contact them after 4 months if I did not get it back. I still feel hopeful. I had some blood work before christmas and will go tomorrow and get the results maybe there is something else going on. I did quit taking my zinc while out of town with family, and it DEFINETELY got worse? It is soooo hard eating anything- when NOTHING tastes! It is soooo wierd! We are lucky to have each other people just hang their mouth open in awe when they find out-! I guess most people really couldn't live with this huh? We are unique for sure as I never meet anyone in person and I am friendly so I am glad that we can encourage each other here. Thanks and keep in touch, I am very hopeful for us all! We will be ok.... ........................until then............................I am praying!

Thought I'd give a little update on my situation. It's been three months now, and I think that maybe, just maybe I have a teeny, tiny bit of improvement. The constant horrible taste in my throat has lessened immensely, and it seems like I can taste a few sweet things a little more than before. It's such a small degree, though, that I'm not even sure if it's in my mind, but it's enough to give me hope. Even if recovery is long and slow, it's better than nothing! Chocolate, juice, pop, ice-cream, etc. is still bad, but I ate some candies called Milk Maids and some Milkfuls and they were actually ok! I would like someone else to try them and see how they taste. Since I just tried them for the first time since surgery, I wonder if they would have been ok all along, or if it means that there really is definate improvement. Could someone out there do me a favor, and try some and let me know how they are for you? Thanks!

:-) Hello again--how have you been? Where have you been? Have your heard anything about your pregnancy? I hope thats not too personal? Anyway, you know what---I think there has been improvement here too.....chocolate is not that bad like it was just replusive before the last two weeks or so. Anything tangy or reallly sweet is a NO...and bread and stuff is getting better everyday, but it is so wierd b/c some days really are better and some days different I don't even know why! It makes NO SENSE at all. I am still taking my ZINC but the days I forget I can really tell. Coffee I really shouldn't drink it really bothers my mouth! I love my coffee though! I understand you do too!? Let me know how you are with number 10! I feel like I am on number 5 but can't be b/c I got that taken care of almost four years ago. Hmmmmm..........I will look forward to hearing from you, I think we ARE making progress YEAH FOR US!

I know what you mean about some days seeming better than others. I've noticed that, too. I keep drinking my coffee even though it doesn't taste all that great. But it's hot, smells good, and has caffeine, so it's enough that I drink it anyway. As far as my pregnancy, I had an ultrasound and there's one healthy baby in there, and there's an area where they think there was probably another one but it died and the body absorbed it. They seem worried about it maybe affecting this baby. We'll see. But at least it wasn't imagining the feelings of being so extremely hungry. It had subsided quite a bit a couple weeks before my ultrasound, so I thought maybe I had been imagining it. But now it all makes sense. With the taste loss, I wonder if maybe I'm really only beginning to get used to it somewhat and am able to eat more things because my brain is forgetting what things are supposed to taste like. Or maybe things really are improving. It's so hard to tell.

Due to stomach pain, I'm seeing a gastro as well, endoscopy tomorrow to rule out ulcers. Now I think it is all result of the tonsilectomy.

I am 15 MONTHS out for my tonsillectomy at age 47 and my taste is still damaged. I keep a metallic-like taste in there that is just hard to get past. I initally lost about 25 pounds but 5 pounds of it has crept back.
Starchy foods like pastas and plain bread are the worst. It just tastes like mushy c**p.
I have found that toasting bread makes it better and that I really like butter now.
Sweet foods are not as sweet and bitter foods are more bitter. I guess that don't have the sweet taste to balance them out.
I have had some improvement from last year but my doctor thinks my nerve was damaged and I may never taste the same.
I really miss good chocolate, sandwiches, bananas, apples, spaghetti, yougert, peanut butter, most cheeses, ranch dressing, and ham (again the sweet is gone).
Foods I do like are meats,( beef, chicken, pork), buttered toast, and salads with French dressing. Some cereal is OKand I have just found that navel oranges are good again.
I am hoping to keep improving but I know my taste will never be what it once was. And to think all that chocolate cake I intentionally refrained from eating :-(

Hi. I just want to say that I had my tonsils out Jan 23 2007 and its been right over 3 weeks now. I have alot of problems with tasting food. I can taste the first bite but after that I cannot even enjoy food. I really hope they come back. Because I agree, living without taste buds is just awful.
Thanks

Hello, I don't know that what I will say will help you....I had my tonsils out November 2nd. And well, it goes like this...my taste is not back yet completely....but it is not as bad as it was! Food is not the same and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I do take my zinc regularly and if I don't well, I sure can tell. They did some blood work but forgot to order the part that would show up my vitamin and mineral levels so it is still a guessing game as to what is really causing this, but it happened after the tonsillectomy. I don't regret having it I haven't been sick in so long, but I am having trouble with "break-outs" like a teen ager again! That was a long time ago! Anyway, I wish you luck, I havn't heard from anyone in a long time and I am hoping that is good news..maybe everyone is recovered or just getting used to it like I am. Keep in touch and keep positive!

I am so excited to say that my taste has been improving day by day!! Almost all non-sweet foods are pretty good now and even many sweets are good! The sweets that aren't quite edible yet are chocolate, pop, baked goods such as cookies, cake, doughnuts, etc. But even they are much better than before. I can actually taste the flavor of them but they just aren't sweet enough to like yet. But I do believe that I will get there! Many candies are quite tasty and sweet and enjoyable, yogurt is okay now, most fruits are good, though juice is still not so wonderful. Bread is good again. YAY!!! Cereal is much better, though it, too, definately could be tastier. I now have complete faith that this all will pass and I will completely recover. It is such a relief. I find that I just don't even care if it takes almost two years for full recovery. Just knowing that it will come makes all this easier to deal with. I am now four and a half months past surgery and I've been noticing improvement little by little for the last month. I hope and pray that everyone else recovers also!! I will still keep everyone updated, but being that it is such slight improvement every day, I probably will only write in once every few weeks or so. I still read, though, so would love to hear how everyone else is coming along. Best of luck to you all!

I had my tonsils out 4 days ago and thought the taste loss would be a temporary thing (not mentioned at all by my Dr) but reading this is depressing!!! Similar symptoms, initial taste but then nothing at the back of my mouth or on swallowing. IT SUCKS!!!I'm not game enough to try and spice it up just yet, as I'm still raw. Whats going to happen at easter...mmmm chocolaaaaate. Please someone post something positive..please say your taste came back and give me some hope! cheers

Hey guys........yes recovery is slow. But I too think it will come back.
Patience is the key. If you want to try something you don't think you'd like now is the time,
I am still using the "fire" at Taco Bell and loving it.
Taste is so much better but not complete but thats okay! Anything is better than what it was back in Nov. Dec. Jan and Feb. Sorry but it is slow especially if you doc had to really press on your tounge!
Hang in there and spice it up when you can not too soon though!
