I read these tonsillectomy threads during my entire tonsillectomy recovery. Boy, was that horrible. I can safely say that the recovery was the worst 3 weeks of my life.

I had my tonsils out on December 17, 2006. My taste was very distorted after the surgery and I kept Google-ing "tonsillectomy taste buds" just to see if anyone else was experiencing the same loss of taste. I'm now a little over 3 months post-surgery and my taste has come back completely. Finally, right? :-D

Goodluck to all who are enduring that ridiculous recovery! It'll be over soon.

I find that I'm getting dejected all over again because after the initial small taste recovery after four months, I've had no more improvement. Sweet things STILL aren't all that great and I REALLY want them to be! It's been almost six months since surgery and I'm getting worried again that the improvement I have had is all I will ever get. How about you, threedwoman? Are sweets good yet? I have to admit that I have found some that are okay and many are good for the first couple bites, but I want it to be normal.

Good lord woman, I'll give you an idea! Get on birth control right now and stop contributing to overpopulation!

I just had my tonsils removed on March 30th. And I also am having the same taste bud effects. I cannot taste anything really except at the front of my tongue. Once it moves to the middle and to the throat nothing. Today is the first day I am able to swallow without too much pain, only taking Alleve in place of the Hydrocodone. Also I am almost nauseated to try and eat anything. This lack of taste thing is very odd and Im eager for it to end. I will keep you posted.

I sure hope you don't have to deal with the taste loss as long as some of us have! You get used to it to a certain degree but it never really gets okay. Especially when trying something you haven't had since before the surgery and you expect it to taste good and it just doesn't. Please keep us posted.

And chuck45, if it makes you feel any better, I have an extremely happy marraige and home life and my children are not physically, mentally, or sexually abused in any way. They have a very happy home life and are being raised in a wonderful healthy manner. We are the type of people who SHOULD be having kids, not teenagers, druggies, alcoholics, unhappy marraiges, etc. My children will be raised well and healthy and probably will grow to be good adult citizens, unlike many of these poor kids raised the opposite. But I can understand your concern, as I've heard this many times before. Just try to understand where I'm coming from and keep an open mind.

Hi I'm so glad that I am not the only one who has lost the sense of tate after a tonsillectomy. I'm even happier to read that some of you have regained some of your sense of taste. I am 33 years old and had my tonsils out on April 30th. I have been getting very discouraged about not being able to taste much of anything. This has totaly taken away my appetite. At first I thought it was a cool way to lose weight, but now I just want to be able to enjoy the taste of something. I have lost 8 pounds so far and can stand to lose a few more, but I am worried that I will not be able to enjoy the buffets on the cruise I'm going on in August. My throat still hurts, vicodin is helping some.

It has to be the most horrible pain I've ever had. I'm 20 years old and just had my tonsillectomy yesterday after having chronic tonsilitis for years. I'm having difficulty even swallowing droplets of water and passing my own saliva. Is this a normal symptom? I do cough every hour and pass mucus (disgusting I know) and no blood thank God! I have some taste, but I just want to be able to even drink water without being in dier pain. Any suggestions?

I just had my tonsils out last week. I had an allergic reaction to the tylenol w/ codeine I was sent home with so I'm now on Percocet which has done absolutely nothing all week except make me dry heave and dizzy. Each day I feel is now getting worse pain wise - my ears are absolutely unbareable at night. And today now I have this G-d awful cheesey taste in my mouth - and all I've had was rice cereal and mushed up bananas! I have a follow up this week, but someone please tell me that this is going to get better! Does anyone have any food suggestions? I'm so sick of all the mush - jello hurts! And I've even resorted to babyfood fruits!

I had my tonsils out 4 years ago, and my taste is still affected. Water tastes pretty bad, and most food doesn't taste too good, either. I lost a lot of weight at first, but I guess my body adjusted because I gained most of it back. My ENT and internist have no ideas about how to make my situation better. Very discouraging!

I'm 26 and had my tonsils out 5 weeks ago. My taste was affected and I thought it was normal at first but now I'm starting to think that it's going to be a long time before I get it back. Reading the scientific journals about how rare this is and nerve damage and everything really freaked me out. It was good to find this board and see I'm not alone.

At first things tasted pretty bad or there was just less flavor. I totally agree about the sweets, they are the worst. Orange juice tastes weird. I think things that rely on sweetness for overall flavor are altered. Alcoholic drinks, especially wine, sadly, don't taste their best. I don't know about the water thing though, I think water tastes okay. My sense of taste I think has gradually come back, I don't notice a difference day to day, but thinking back to 5 weeks ago, I believe that things taste better now.

I don't know if I will ever get my taste back completely, but I would be happy with 85%. I'm sorry for those who seem to have a more severe case of this, I hope it gets better for you. But I think it's hardly the worst medical problem to have, just not very pleasant at all. I know most of these posts were written a while ago, but if you're all still reading I'd love to hear about any more success stories.

Well, I have a word of encouragement! I lost my taste unbeknownst to me at the time. I had complications of thrush and such and therefore didn't realize what was really happening until Thanksgiving. I had my tonsils out on November 6th. Anyway, I believe in prayer and gave it all to God. I was getting concerned I will be honest because I did not hardly cook and certainly didn't eat much at all during this time. As a mother of four that was really not what was the right example considering they had to eat(thank God for hubby) Anyway, making a long story short, I had a hysterectomy in March and still no taste return. Well, I can say that in June something happened I don't know how or what but I know when, and I know it is here. But, only with a vengeance! Thats ok though, its back! I give God the glory and all the glory cause 8 months is a long time, and yes I had accepted it, but really knew I needed it to be a good mom and enjoy life like everyone else, as we all know food is a major part of the society we live in today.
So, I said all this to say.....faith in God will take you places and will keep you when you may not have the answers to life's problems.
Where do you put your faith? I know I experienced a miracle. I am EVER grateful. I can and will pray for you too! Giving God the glory........ Oh, but be careful what you pray for.....chocolate is what I crave mostly alllll the time now! Ah well, can't be too bad eh?
So long for now! Let me know about your miracles....they do come true! ;-)
