I had my surgery in April, and to say things went bad is an understatement. Anyway, as for taste, initially, i thought my taste buds and sense of smell were heightened, I had some soup and could taste every spice within, and could smell everything. That was only a three weeks after surgery. However, since then, my taste buds went south. About the only thing I like, is food with salt. Chocolate of any kind does nothing for me, nor do I eat cereal or any other sweets for that matter. It's been six months, and it doesn't seem to be changing at all, but I'm hopeful.

I had my tonsils out on October 31st and was never told that taste loss would be a possible side effect. Initially I thought the loss of taste might be because of the medication and having a swollen tongue but after reading the threads my fears have been confirmed. I have been adding lots of salt to things like eggs and soup but I worry about the long term affects of too much sodium. Everything sweet from juices, fruit, chocolate, and what I thought would get me through the recovery, ice cream and freezies taste disgusting and metallic. Water which I loved tastes bad and anything sour like sour cream and sour dough bread taste horrible. It is getting pretty difficult to find food that I can eat safely after the surgery while having it not make me want to throw it up because of the taste. I have my follow up appointment with my surgeon this coming Wednesday so I hope he will have some good news for me. I don't think I can go on eating food without enjoying it. What a horrible way to loose weight!

I too had my tonsils out and have problems with taste afterward. Everything sweet or dry has a bitter taste. I asked my doctor about this and of course this condition has a long medical name. What happens is, a nerve in your throat gets irritated during the surgery (they don't even have to get that close to it for this to happen) and it swells. This in turn effects your taste-buds. The good news is, if you want to call it that, is that your sense of taste should return back to normal after 6 months. This is especially difficult for me at the moment, because I am a picky eater and on top of that I am pregnant. I hope this helps anyone else out there experiencing this problem. It's hard to find good info about it on the internet.

This is weird I have had my tonsils out for just over a month and I have noticed within the last two weeks my taste is different with certain foods. I didn't notice any loss of taste when I first had my tonsils removed. Now certain foods and drinks just don't taste right and most leave like a bitter after taste. Most of the foods that taste different to me are sweetened drinks or sweet foods such as chocolate all leave bitter after tastes. Salty foods seem to taste o.k. and leave no after taste.

I'm 2 1/2 months post-op and still without an appetite. Most things taste bitter but sweets are almost overwhelmingly sugary. I work on a pediatric unit (where we recover some post-op tonsillectomy adults) and have never heard of this complication before. I know it's nerve damage but am hoping it's not permanent. I really enjoy food (have always loved to cook) but am finding it difficult to eat anything. I've lost 10 lbs so far. Any encouraging words?

I'm 25 and had my tonsils out 4 months ago. I almost didn't do it after reading several of the complaints/problems posted on several tonsillectomy boards. Having the tonsillectomy was the best decision I could have ever made! I'm much healthier today because of it. The first week was very rough. Right after the surgery I could taste everything, but by the next day, the meds had really distorted the taste of things. I'm convinced it was the medication they put me on that screwed up my taste buds. The bitter taste continued for nearly the two week healing period. By the third week, I was experimenting with more solid foods and starting to get my taste back to normal. I know someone else who didn't get her complete sensation of taste back for 1 month. But to those of you having problems - have faith. I can personally say that it took lots of patience, but it did come back. The more food I ate, the better it started getting.

I had my tonsils out May 25, and it is now October 13 and my sense of taste is still lousy. I like to think that I'm making tiny, incremental improvements. But I'm really beginning to worry that this change is permanent. I can't taste sweets. The doctor said that the clamp that they use during the surgery could have "bruised" the nerves involved in taste. But he said that it should eventually get better... I'm really wondering now if it was the right decision for me to have my tonsils removed. Losing your sense of taste is a pretty high price to pay. I keep praying for some improvement.

I had my tonsils removed on June 30th 2008 and I too am having a loss of taste, I can’t taste sweets either. I also have a swallowing issue; it seems as if I am swallowing sand paper. I just got back from the Dr and he told me that they have never heard of such a thing. I am glad I found that I am not the only one.

I am 50 and had my tonsils out 5 weeks ago...still can't taste food except some salt, have the bitter, metallic taste, and feel like I have shag carpet growing in my throat. By 4 pm daily, my throat is really sore. My doc hasn't allowed any more pain meds since day 21...is that usual...how long with the throat still be sore at this level? I have low potassium now with weakness etc from not being able to eat very well...any advice...thanks!

It has been about 4 months since I had my tonsils out. I couldn't eat for about 10 days, then everything tasted bad except for sweets, which did taste sweeter but were the only things that seemed to taste 'normal' that and dr pepper, so I went for two weeks eating three musketeers and dr pepper, which of course, was horrible for weight/health reasons. Eventually, I was able to go back to other foods without feeling they tasted too weird. I think I am pretty much back to normal now. I still have dry mouth but I have been drinking loads of water.

I just had my tonsils removed 10/23/08. My sense of taste did not change that day, and I did not notice a change on Friday (taken note of items I attempted to eat but throat was too sore to swallow). My sense of taste has been rapidly deteriorating starting Saturday (10/25/08).
Now everything tastes nasty on the back of my tongue. I can smell everything fine though. I smell a nice little shake a made and I try to eat it and it is a bit disappointing to find it not only has no real flavor, but it has a nasty aftertaste on the back of my tongue.
I just called talked to my doctor's nurse today and she said that it is normal and will come back in an undefined amount of time. She said it just depends on how long it takes for the throat to heal.
As for pain, I am feeling a good deal of it now. Vicodin does not really work for me, but about 400mg of ibuprofen works ok. Eating is still difficult with that, but I try to keep the meds down. I need to work and drive anyhow.
I will update on my status later on.

I just had my tonsils removed on 10.14.08. At first I could taste food; however since day 11 post surgery, my taste has slowly gone away. I can taste jello, penut butter, honey, cranbury juice and cream cheese, but I can't eat anything I used to enjoy as everything tastes so gross going down. For example...bread, pasta, burgers, fries, soda all tastes terrible. That is only what I have tried since my pain subsided. I am too afraid to try anything else that I love for fear that I will be totally grossed out and not be able to eat it again. My doctor did not tell me that this could happen either. I called the office the other day and he said it can last up to 6 weeks. I have already lost 10 pounds. My fear is that my doctor said 6 weeks; however I am reading posts about people that have lost their taste for longer. I am really upset about this! Does anyone have any other suggestions for food that tastes slightly ok?
