Thank God for this site! My doctor claims that he's never had a patient with my complaints. I'm 37 and had my tonsils removed 3 months ago. I am experiencing much of what has been expressed here: weird taste in my mouth and loss of sweet taste. In addition, about one month after the surgery, my tongue started to feel dry. I feel like I'm not getting the full flavor of all foods. I've looked but can't find what percentage of patients experience this. It's pretty depressing........

Thank God for this site....I had my tonsils taken out on 10-30-08 and I won't bore with with my experience because it was just as bad as everyone's else. Sometimes I think to my self "was it worth it". But back to what I was concerned about. MY DAMN TASTE BUDS......I read about how the nerve might have been irritated. WTF? I need to taste my foods..I highly upset with my doctor about not telling me about this. Losing my taste buds? OMG why. I would not have done this procedure if I knew this. I rad on other forums that it can be up to a year? I just hope I get it back. For godsake thanksgiving?

I had my sugery 10/06/08 and it seemed initially I could taste the gatorade and chicken broth flavor. But when I was finally able to eat real food ( 2 1/2 weeks later) I was so dissappointed. I tried to eat pizza (my favorite food) but I couldn't taste it!! It tasted like cardboard. I tried chocolate, no taste. I reminds me of when you have a lot of sinus drainage and everything tastes bad, but it is like that all the time...even water tastes bad. My doctor told me to give it 6 weeks , but I am still without 50-60% of my taste. I can taste a hint of what the food is when I first bite into it, but then nothing after that. I just hope it is not permanent. I was never told this was a side affect. I love food and eat it because it tastes good. I don't get cravings anymore, it's terrible. If someone could tell me to give it 6 months, I could live with that, but the not knowing is the hard part.

I had my tonsils out 11/6/08. I go for my first follow-up visit tomorrow. I am glad to know that I'm not the only one with this problem. I've been forcing myself to eat because I've already lost 17 pounds. Hopefully, I'll make a full recovery. Sigh.

It will be two weeks tomorrow since I had mine taken out.
My taste (from what I've eaten) have seem to return - for the most part.
I do have a problem tolerating certain flavors. What were once mildly flavored foods now are very sour. Also I can detect the slightest salt (this may actually be a good thing) so I take very little of that.

Sodas are out of the question - both because of my throat and the taste. I had tuna fish tonight (no onions),and it tasted pretty normal. Onions are a different story - I realized a few days ago I can' t take them any more. They just kill my salivary glands.

Over all, it just seems my sense of taste has been thrown in over-drive (if that makes any sense). I think I actually taste more of items and my brain can't process it all. I don't know.

Dear all, just stumbled on this site looking up to see if others are experiencing this horrid taste problem! Though to be honest it was the least of my problems - 4 days after my first tonsillectomy I got an infection and was in huge pain and heavy antibiotics - 9 days later woke with severe heamorraging, ambulance to hospital, had to remove a clot from my throat which was obstructing my breathing, tried to stem bleeding for an hour and a half and then back into surgery for a second general and second op, then hospital for 3 days.... so just to say, it could be worse folks, keep your heads up! Mind you I felt much much better after the second op and hardly any pain but the taste thing is bothering me a lot although in the light of what I've been through I keep some perspective! Chocolate and anything sweet tastes like cough medicine... and I'm eating everything but somehow only tangerine oranges taste normal, cheese sort of OK, as someone said, savoury things are the best like roast meat. But yes, most things are salty or sour! I guess I'll just have to wait then and be patient.

Yes, it will get better. I had issues with Salty and all things sour. Murder on my glands.

Chocolate tasted like dirt and sweets in general I had issues with.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel. It took me about 3 full weeks before my sense of taste started to return - so hang in there all!

Wow!! I thought I was going crazy with my tasting issues. My doc said to gove 2 more months. I had my tonsills out Sept. 22, 2008. This was the worst decision I made!! I have issues with talking and tasting my favorite sweet things!!! My doctor with held this information from me about the whole tasting thing. I am 30 yrs old and do not need a doctor to make decisions for me. I very upset that this happened and he (my doctor) new this could happen but did not inform me. Have any of you got all your taste back yet?? if so how long?? it's been 3 months for me.

My doctor did not explain to me this taste issue could happen. I am PISSED!!! I even asked him the other day why did he not tell me this. When he told me that they needed to come I asked what are the risks of this procedure. He just said bleeding and anytime you under go anastegia (what ever) you may never wake up. I said that is it?? and he said yes. Now I am having with tasting and he just now explains to me that a nerve can be damaged. I asked him why he did not tell me. He just said because it is so rare. I am so mad!!! Have any of you recovered your taste yet?? it's been 3 months for me.

I had my tonsils out on Nov. 3rd 2008. I STILL can't taste good. Everything seems to be bitter....even water! I always have a nasty taste in my mouth! My doctor says he's never heard of this as a post tonsillectomy complication. He said I may have type of reflux, not like GERD. He gave me a sinus wash and a reflux med prescription. Then he told me to stay away from coffee, which is like the ONLY thing I taste normal! I think his diagnosis is bogus! He, too, never said ANYTHING about taste issues after surgery. I am livid! Every time I eat, it's a reminder I can't taste. I eat because I have hunger pains...not because I enjoy what I taste. I also try to drink a little water or juice even though it all tastes bitter nasty! I'm really really hoping this is not permanent! I've read on other sites that it took 10months plus for some people to fully recover.....YIKES!

WOW!! I had my tonsils out in October and still have a bitter taste in mouth and all sweets taste like c**p!! I have an appointment with a neurologist tomorrow to try get some closer. My ENT as well did not tell me about this complication. He says that he don't tell his patients cause it is so rare too. Well, this is not fair. He said this can happen when they cauterize. Had I have known this, I would have seeked the laser version. I am as thin as a rail cause I have really no desire to eat. Has anybody got their taste back yet??? It's been 4 months for me and I seem to get worse.

I had mine out Sept 15, 2008 and it's now Jan 10, 2009. My taste is about 50% back. The first two months were absolutely awful. Water, bread, and pretty much everything but canned chicken noodle soup & chicken flavored top ramen tasted terrible. It was pretty depressing. Since then there's been enough improvement that I'm no longer concerned I'll never taste again. But that's about it. Since my surgery, I haven't truly enjoyed any food. Which sucks, because food is my favorite, and I've barely lost a few pounds. Unfortunately, I keep eating out of hunger... (I'm not really overweight, but I guess it'd be cool if this whole thing made me Hollywood-Thin)

I had mine out Nov. 11 and still no taste buds working and still learning to swallow. My tonsils I am told were VERY LARGE so I guess they left a gaping hole because food and drink go up when I swallow. Anyone experience this?

Loading...

Yeah.. I went through that too. It starts to calm down. Although I still have issues swallowing breads, potatoes (that kind of stuff).
