Hello, I am 54 and engaged to a 62 year old man. He was diagnosed about 18 months ago with chronic kidney disease and put on prednisone. He's been on it steadily at different doses with the exception of a few months when taken off. I have seen him take on a 'Jekyl/Hyde' personality where he rages at the smallest things and says angry, mean things to me that he NEVER said before! I realize steroids can affect you this way, but he doesnt seem to see the change in him self - he blames me and says I'm the moody one. All of this HAS given me moods of sadness periodically, but I just try to find ways to keep busy. I graduate from college in 2 months and we have been together for 6 years. We are engaged, but I'm not sure that I want to go thru with it. My question is, does prednisone cause long been lasting personality defects and does it magnify personaity traits that are already present? Does anyone have similar experiences? We used to be so close, and this is breaking my heart!!

I sure wish a voice of experience would chime in here! My friend was badly injured: resluting nerve issues/swelling. He was put on a 12 day prednisone pack regiment to help restore nerve function and reduce swelling. A week later all hell broke loose, He is a jeckyl/hyde personality, and it's been nearly 3 weeks since the regimen ended ( properly) and he still rages, will not listen to reason and has an unhealthy obsession with manipulating and harassing a person he blames for everything. I am caught in the crossfire. How long, if ever, will the real person emerge?
