I had rotator cuff surgery about 8 weeks ago now. Im healing pretty good and Im not really feeling any pain. The only problem is when stretch, I sometimes feel light twinges in my upper arm between the shoulder and my bicep, kinda like I've just lightly teared it. It doesnt hurt when it happens but it seems like it shouldnt be happening. Should i be seeing a doctor about this??

I just had my dominant arm rotator cuff repaired back on 12/10/08. I had my nondominant RC repaired 2 years ago and was much better 3 months out than I am now. I was doing better the first 2 months but like a dum ass overused it one weekend (8 weeks from surgery) and have been paying for it ever since. I'm scared I may have damaged the repair but the pain is not as bad as some of you seem to have. No numbness but an occasional sharp pain with certain motions which concerns me. I know the burning and throbbing pains are normal. I worked out on machines last night (medium light weights) and it woke me up in the middle of the night barking pretty loud. The PT I had was terrible so I quit him and am looking for another one.

This sounds exactly like my story. I just had rotator cuff surgery 5 weeks ago, and feel like something is wrong as well. I did so well, for the first few weeks and them wham, major pain all day that would not go away. Also, have this huge crunching noise, and clicking with lightning hot pain in my shoulder that almost drops me to my knees. I was surprised when I told my Physicians Assistant about this, that they made me think I was trying to get more med's too. And, then he told me I should go back to work, even though I am in a heavy construction job and drive a huge company truck. Hmmm. I haven't even started physical therapy yet, and it's okay to go back to work where I got hurt in the first place.
I am thinking about getting a second opinion as well. Not happy, with the way the Dr. and her assistant seem to poo poo it.

I had rotator cuff repair and acromioplasty in late February 2009. My shoulder is healing but I have developed chronic neck pain which radiates from my neck to the shoulder blade. This pain intensifies at night and limits the amount of sleep I'm getting. My surgeon had no answers. Anyone experiencing the same problems?

I had my first rotator cuff surgery in October of my senior year in high school. I finally got well and start college ball in August. Half way through the fall season I went to get in checked again after having pains. And in November I had my second surgery. Today, I'm still having really bad pains in my shoulder. Not sure if it's ever going to go away. I'm not sure if I'll ever have a good shoulder again and Im only 18

Hi there..I had my surgery, Cuff repair and a/c decomp about 3 weeks ago. Last week I was feeling a little better a left the sling behind and started doing dishes and laundry. Big mistake on my part. My whole shoulder is sore now and all the muscles ache. I can still lift my arm and get to the desired 90%s but I wonder how long I need to stay in the sling. I read not to lift more than a cup of coffee. I cant go back to my Dr cause my insurance turned down the surgery and I havent paid him for that yet. Im only taking pain meds at night cause they just make me sick. Anyone have any ideas ? I hope I didnt over do it too soon. Thanks in advance :-D

Hey . . . I had a bone spur in my cuff area, was told to have it fixed before the spur tore my cuff and I had real problems. Well, my story is the same as the rest of your stories. It is now 5 weeks post surgery (supposedly minor surgery). I hurt more now than I did before the surgery. My shoulder is weak. When I do exercises, the shoulder hurts. When I let it rest it hurts. I sleep in my recliner most nights because it is like a toothache. It feels like I have a pulled muscle in the top of my shoulder and the nerve that runs down the back of your arm is what really hurts. Even my wrist area aches to a degree. I do hold out hope that it will get better with time, but I am about to write off golf for the summer of 09. My doctor said that I needed the surgery so that I could get back to doing all the things I want to do, and while I'm not ready to say I made a mistake by having the surgery, the surgery to this point is limiting me far more than the impingement limited me before the surgery. I'll re-post in a month if things are getting better, but for now, while I"m not real discouraged, I am in pain.

AM I GLAD YOU ALL ARE IN PAIN, haha, not really, however it helps to know that I am not exhaggerating the pain I feel after 3 weeks post op.

I have run into people that look at me as though there is something wrong that I still wear the brace and have not yet been given the "ok" to begin PT.

My arm gets very tired and the front and back of my shoulder are sore, sore, sore. It also feels like it pulls on my neck, and I hate having to ask my hubby to do everything for me, not the most romantic time in our lives.

How long will the dr. keep giving the pain meds, I don't think I will be a happy camper if he cuts that off at this point. At least the pain meds to take away the edge and help sleeping.

THanks for the posts.

:-D Hello everyone,
I had right rotator cuff surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago. I am in the sling for a good month. I started physical therapy where they move my arm/shoulder 1 1/2 weeks after surgery. Pain suddenly got worse but pain med. has helped with that and also ice packs all the time. I can't write for very long or really use my hand/fingers or my shoulder is in pain for a long while. Is slowly getting better. Sleeping is terrible. Seems like the recliner, couch and bed just are to much pain to sleep in. I usually pass out if I sleep, but again it is getting better. PT person is a huge help. They stretch my arm/shoulder into the pain ever so slightly. They say I am doing great. I am also surprised I have so much pain, dull achy to long sharp to short bursts of severe pain. My shoulder top and neck also hurt too. The front muscle pain was helped by the PT telling me it was because I was having the sling carry my arm/shoulder to far forward. And at night to try to tuck my back shoulder blades under, it would help me to sleep flat and pain free and it helped. Dr. and PT's have been great. very thankful. Just waiting until I can do more and keep recovering. Hope everyone does ok. Hang in there it should get better. :-D

Im glad I found this post to. I had rotator cuff repair and acromioplasty in Jan. 2009. Pain was not to bad about a month out of the surgery then I dont know if I done something or what exactly happened but now it is May and I am having a lot of pain from the right side of my neck down through my shoulder and down into my elbow. I started PT about 10 days after the surgery then in April I got a mild case of pnemonia and missed 4 weeks of PT. I have not returned to work yet and my Doc. says it just takes time to heal. Im in worse pain now than before the surgery. Never had any kind of surgery and I am a 42 year old male. Surgery on my dominant arm side. I do railroad work which reqiures throwing swithes, climbing ladders on the cars, tying handbrakes and alot of other stuff but my doc is looking at July for a return to work. I have returned to PT and having more pain than ever. I know none of you are Docs but do you think I should have an MRI to see if anything is wrong. I brought this up to my doc and he said it was to early to have an mri because everything has not healed. If that is true guess this is one long road to recovery.

this is my 2nd post about my surgery. I m six weeks out and have progressed to the point that i have started to experience periods of hours at a time where I feel no pain, maybe pressure, but no pain. However, I must misunderstand the pain-free time because I think it gives me lisence to do things, like put things away with that arm, open the car door, etc. reach around my back or hang up clothes on and on... The bad news is that after I overdo things, pain comes on like a bat out of hell and it's burning and painful. Then it takes a day and a half of good full attempt at keeping arm rested and not moving other than the range of motion movements to get better.
The lesson for me is that I cannot push this healing and do too much. If it's not hurting, I will enjoy that without having to PUSH THE ENVELOPE, because it will hurt a lot if I do too much. Thanks for all your posts. BTW- does anyone still take pain meds in 3nd month? or is the Dr. going to think Im a junkie? When this thing hurts, it does not discriminate according to how far I am post op. Who is continuing to take pain meds after 8 weeks? if so, is that a potential for addiction? Any responses are much appreciated! Thanks and good luck to all.

I had rotator cuff surgery 1 year ago on my right shoulder and I am right handed and I have good and bad days at first i felt better but now the pain is back just like it was before they told me I needed surgery. I have the hardest time sleeping. It just hurts. the doctors act as if i want to be in pain. I am 42 mother of 4 and I don't have time for pain. I really dont want to have another surgery and really not sure what to do but live with the pain

Glad I found all of your honest, real commentary. I'm now into 2 1/2 years of almost constant pain after lifting a heavy crate of books. It does not sound like a good idea to have surgery but I have not had lasting results with physical therapy, cort. shots, chiropractic, etc...I cannot take anti-inflam. drugs and the pain is torture, anybody have any positive results after surgery. It just sounds like most people have no real help or the pain gets worse. My injury is to the front of my shoulder, torn biceps tendon with rotater cuff involvement, burning pain!

Just thought I would share my success story to give you all hope. I Had Rc surgery and compression in January 09 on non-dominant arm. I was in lots of pain for the first 3 weeks but it slowly eased. Had about 12 physio sessions and stretched / used elastic bands for the next 2 months. Re-started the gym after about 4 months and decided to pay a personal trainer (something i have never done in 10 years of lifting) to help my rehab. She was excellent and showed me several RC strengthening exercises, as well as isolation work so I could start re-training my other body parts. It has now been 5 months since my op and I get very little pain in my shoulder. I weight train 3 times a week which includes 2 sessions of pure RC strengthening, I make sure I warm up and stretch well before and after and have also been doing yoga at least once per week. The strange thing is that my right shoulder was just as bad as my left and I thought that I would have had the op on that one aswell...however since I have been working my RC and stretching the pain has totally disappeared in my right shoulder...so I believe that if I would have trained the way I am training now there would not have been any need for RC surgery on my left shoulder...oh well...hindsight is a great thing...so my advice would be to hit the weights (with correct form) stretch well and devote lots of time in the gym for RC strengthening (these routines can be found by doing Google searches) Good luck all! :-D
