thks 827jecm for the tip, it is the same thing for me.
I had surgery 4 weeks ago, and I was doing better until a couple of days ago the pain started again down to the wrist, I am back on ibuprofen but tonight I will ask my PT Dr about it and eventually my surgeon about it. But it is reassuring as I thought I had done something bad and reinjured myself. Hopefully I did not! :-)

I know this thread seems to be quite old but I would like to post a bit of advice that I have found to be amazing even though yes I can see that it has been posted in this thread already but this is another of it if anyone is interested. I recently had surgery done (Arthroscopic Shoulder/Rotator Cuff Surgery) because of a tear in my rotator cuff, stretched ligaments from reoccurring dislocations and a 20% chip of the ball in my Glenohumeral Joint (shoulder ball and socket joint). It is now 3 weeks after my surgery and I find minimal to no pain at all and only await to do my physio on my doctors orders. I was give a full prescription to percocet which as I am sure many of you know is a very cautious painkiller because of the addicting side effects. I can honestly say I have not needed one pill at all and I would say more or so that I owe this to my cold therapy unit (Look up Breg Kodiak Cold Therapy Intelli-Flo pads for the shoulder), although you may see it as just too much money (prices vary but mine was 250$) you have to take in what you are willing to give for your arm to be yours again. Ask almost any doctor and they will all say the same thing how icing is probably one of the most important things for recovery and so far with 3 weeks after the surgery and having the amount of movement and almost no pain I can't more. If you have a question please just ask and I will post later on in recovery for anyone who interested as to the effectiveness. Will most likely post back in 2-3 months unless questions are posted. Wish all well with any recoveries and a happy 7 day late new year all :-)

to the guest that just posted last week re: the cold therapy, I am CERTAINLY going to check that out. THANKYOU!!!! was your shoulder totally torn, or just partial? Both times, mine was totally torn through (labrum on #1 and rotator on #2)
Some of you people who have had good experiences post surgery have no clue how good you have it. I have had two operations and the last one was over two (2) years ago. Just had a baby boy two (2) weeks ago and I couldn't even feed him with my left hand this morning because the shoulder is so screwed up still. For those of you contemplating the operation, fair warning, worst pain you could ever imagine. It makes knee and hip operations look like a hangnail.
Couple of tips.
Get an electric recliner to sleep in for the first six weeks after the operation. You won't want to sleep in a bed.. trust me.
Stay ahead of the pain. start popping the pain killers about 21 hours after the surgery as that nerve block is going to wear off within the next hour or two.. if you wait till you are in pain... it's too late.
I just called to set up an appointment with my orthopod and fear I will have to get a third surgery on this wing of mine as there is no way this pain is normal. heck, it hurts more now than it did before the operation(s).

Hi All I had my operation rotator cuff surgery - i posted a few times already and wanted to update. It is now 6 months post op and i don't have full movement as yet. I can raise my arm about 170 degrees and still cant do up my bra from behind my back. But i can do my hair, cook, clean, and type. I dont take any pain killers but sometimes my shoulder clicks, and i still cant sleep properly. I love sleeping on my side but after the surgery it is painful putting weight on the arm, and the other side is becoming sore too, as I have over compensated by using my right arm for everything that it complains too. I highly recommend my surgeon - Dr Petchell from Royal Prince Alfred hospital, Sydney NSW - caring, a good listener and knowledgeable. I still do my PT every day and the hardest part of this process has been employment. Having been out of work for soo long doesnt look good on paper and worse still is explaining you have an injury !! Anyway hopefully things will work out.
On a side note, I am taking Glucosomine supplements for joint care every day and it seems to be beneficial for me. Highly recommend taking extra vitamins to help the body through this time.

This is a reply to the guest who replied to my "Cold Therapy" post:
My injury was a full tear both Labrum and Rotator Cuff and even with both I find the healing to be quite easy just takes patience. If you do get a Cold Therapy Unit I would advise that you follow the surgeries icing instructions exactly (20 mins on 5 times a day) and if you don't you will notice as I have that with out icing the pain begins to become quite prominent. Now approaching 1 month after the surgery and so far I haven't noticed much pain or problems, I have an appointment tomorrow with my surgeon to discuss physio. Everything looks good and I'll keep you updated. :-)

Had a RCR 12/29/10. Little to no pain the first month. While doing PT at home, felt a "pop, and have had pain last 3 weeks. Dr. said I had a good repair with good tissue, but wants to MRI for a retear based on my explanation of the pain being similiar as it was before surgery. Questions: Am I just over sensitive to pain since I did not have hardly any the first month? Won't an MRI pick up on the original tear this early out (9 weeks)?

I really appreciate all the posts, am having a hard time making the decision to have this surgery. Most of what I see here is negative, realize people in pain who are trying hard need to vent but holy cow! You guys are scaring me out of doing it. I have a full tear 2cm, with a large bone spur off the clavicle poking through one of the tendons. I've had repeated (6-8x) debilitating pain after doing certain motions, last time was really bad. I realized that this is likely to keep happening if I don't do the surgery. But after reading these posts, it looks like surgery is going to guarantee that I always have this pain - in varying degrees of "critical". It's on my dominant (right) side and I live alone so it's going to be a long difficult recovery I think.
I appreciate the input re: cold therapy, sleeping arrangements and careful timing on the rehab process. My doctor has a reputation as "legendary" in shoulder repair but how do I really know? I have very little confidence in the PT portion of my medical group, but unfortunately insurance ties me to this group. (that's a whole different rant!)
Maybe there is somewhere else in this forum to look for step by step info after surgery for effective recovery? Any pointers would be appreciated. TIA

Ok everyone.....3rd post. My RCR was Oct. 2010. Recovery has been long and I am so done with PT and doctors. My range of motion was almost 100% and my strength was great as well (both have always been pretty good, it was always the pain that was my problem). So Dr and PT both discharged me last week. Literally 2 days after I was told I didn't need to see the dr. again I started having sharp shoulder pain but I chalked it up to the pending rainstorm we were about ready to get. We the pain hasn't let up...at all....and my range of motion has basically been cut in half!! What in the heck is going on? The only thing I have done was some spring cleaning and I felt no real discomfort while doing it. Called Dr. today (felt stupid doing it because I was just discharged). Nurse told me to take my perscription antiinflammatory for a week and see if that helps.

Hi, I had torn tendon repairs Feb 2010 and Nov 2010, same great doctor. Both were full thickness tears but the left was substantially worse than the right. So the right went along perfectly on schedule with PT for second and third month. I am over one year out and can not tell I even ever had the surgery or any problems. The left is another story. Four months out I have had 2 1/2 mths of PT, still have limited range of motion especially over my head and very little strength recovery. Am still using 1 lb weights. I just now can get by without pain meds but I still have discomfort/pain lying down and after/during therapy. Dr. says could take over a year before healing is complete. Oh, he had to snug up the tendon to reattach and so that is causing even less range of motion. No matter how careful you are, things happen and you aggravate the area. It has happened to me five or six times. One time I felt a big jolt doing my exercises and I lost over 1/2 of the ability to raise my arm and it took 4 days to come back. I was sure I tore the tendon loose so they did a new MRI a few weeks ago and I'm still intact. But I don't have the surgery affecting other parts of my body. I would be very concerned if that was happening. I hope this helps.

I had my shoulder scraped, shaved and several bone spurs removed, its about 9 months ago and it still hurts everyday, most all of the time. My Drs. Assistant saw me said everything was good but my mind was tricking my shoulder into hurting because I was craving pain meds. I told him I had not had any for 2 months and he gave me a cortizone shot, it helped right away and for 2 months I had hope.
Now I am back to hurting every day, waking up 5-6 times a night to readjust due to pain. My arm hurt less before this surgery then it does now. I'm worried I will have to live like this forever. Thanks for the good site as some of the stories gave me hope. Im going to keep looking on the brightside for now. :-)

Hi all
I had a large tear in my rotator cuff and needed surgery ASAP. I had it done and hardly used ice packs at all. What the body needs to heal is good blood flow ! Ice just numbs the area so you dont feel pain and helps if there is swelling but nothing else. Warm heat is best to get the blood flow happening and healing the inside wounds. I think the ice machines are a gimmic. They didnt even use them in our physio room as part of recovery process. Just heat packs. and that is why physio is a must. ! It gets the body moving and the blood circulating. Also my physio told me that the heat helps to relax the muscle and prepare it for the exercises, so it isnt soo tough. At the end of the day listen to your body and apply what you feel is best but i ditched ice packs after the swelling went down and never looked back.

Have you ever had any other imaging studies done to see there is possibly something else wrong? I had the same type of thing done in July and basically was given no restrictions by the doctor except to use some caution. Well one week post op I was at the beach and shaking a pillow into a pillowcase when I felt this sharp searing tearing pain that put me on my knees. The bad pain mostly went away after a few days but it still hurt. Finally dr. ordered and MRI Arthrogram and found out that I had completely torn my supraspinatus. That was repaired in October and I just starting having issues with it again. I refuse to believe that I will have to live this way the rest of my life. Im only 44 years old and plan on being able to play with my grandchildren when I have them.....many years down the road! I would ask to be checked out again and I would be pissed that they were basically accusing me of "needing" to have the pain meds.

i had left rotator cuff surgery almost 6 years ago... i still have daily pain in my shoulder that goes down into my elbow then numbness into my last to fingers on my left hand. after countless doctor appts, mri's, pt, and cortizone shots the doctors still tell me that there is nothing wrong with my shoulder now. im only 24 and hope not to have to live the rest of my life with this annoying pain..

Since 2004, I have had 6 rotator cuff surgeries. 4 on my left and 2 on my right. I have moderate to severe pain daily. It goes from one elbow, up my bicep, through the left shoulder, across my upper back, up to the base of my head ( which I have headaches daily, quite a few severe) across the other shoulder, down the right bicep to the right elbow. Sometimes I have pain in both forearms and tingling in my fingers. I have ruled out with doctors, any type of arthritis. I am in DESPERATE NEED of some relief!!! Anything I do irritates the shoulders. I have to keep movement in my shoulders so I still do my exercises daily. I don't know who to turn to anymore for help?
