Recently my sister and I heard that my cousin suffer of Munchausen syndrome. We were surprised, we believed that he is really ill for a long time. Now we don’t know what to think. What can we expect? What is the general prognosis for Munchausen syndrome? Can anybody tell me, please?

Unfortunately I need to say that persons with Munchausen syndrome are rarely treated successfully. First, it’s very hard to diagnose this syndrome and persons with Munchausen syndrome never want to have any kind of psychiatric treatment. And usually the self-inflicted illnesses and injuries of persons with Munchausen syndrome can cause serious illness.

First of all I am very sorry to hear that your cousin is suffering from such a terrible condition such is Munchausen syndrome. Unfortunately there is no cure for this syndrome and therapy hasn’t showed any improvement so the best thing you can do is to be very supportive to your cousin and to help where and whenever you can.
Also if you notice strange behavior that could lead in self hurting try to prevent it or stop it before it is too late.
Unfortunately your cousin will refuse any kind of treatment and all help that you will try to give and the hardest thing is to help to someone who doesn’t want to be helped.
