Beegirl,
Do you think you could just be passing "air"?
My sister told me that she will sometimes get up from sitting down and pass "air" out of her vagina. She says it's not gas,, but only air.
My CRS also said that many women pass air and it's not gas.
I feel like I've been dealing with this for so long that I don't know the difference between gas or air anymore!!
Perhaps it's only air up there... do you feel "gassy" when it's happened?

CJ-It is most definetly gas--ugh, but again, like Penny said a while back, if this is all it is and it is pinhole size, I will be happy as a clam... CJ def. wait it out a little while because the body does heal and there are no guarantees with surgery (this is only my opinion) but ask flower too, hers got bigger, so did Bea's... wait it out awhile. as far as sex, I don't know...I had sex...but we have a little one, so we don't have too much time for sex, ha... I don't know, I will continue to have it unless I feel like it is hurting me...I think that I may always have to worry about this-as long as I can live and it doesn't get worse- Mine got so big after that first surgery-ugh...anyway, be good -b
Beegirl,
I am sorry that you passed gas, but you sound very positive. Like you said, if it's pinsize it might be fine to live with it. Did your doctor check to see if your fistula was gone when he did your reversal?
I will definitely wait and see what happens before I have surgery. That is what my CRS said we need to do. I think (hope) that mine isn't bigger. I haven't passed any stool in over 2 weeks, but I haven't had runny stools at all. I hope it is healing!!
I know the firmer the stools the better as long as I am not constipated and have to strain. I may be taking stool softners forever!

HEllo everyone,
Just a quick response before I get ready for work. I've been having that awful migraine post anti-depressant so have been somewhat down for a couple of days.
CJ I tried to continue exercising throughout. If you're in bed post surgery there's not much you can do but when you start to feel better I tried to get back on the elliptical. That's what I have. Walking the dog was always my first exercise. As b knows I have a bike though it could get more use.
B I wouldn't worry too much about the gas. I actually found a website with posts relating just to passing gas vaginally and no one mentioned a fistula so I think it can happen normally. I feel it when I sit down on my backside, which I imagine forces organs and air forward, but not every time. I'm assuming it's nothing to worry about.
Bea, my thoughts are with you. Good luck in your research. Would your plan allow you to go out of the country? Anything would seem to be worth having it taken care of once and for all.
It's Friday, hurray. Do people have Labor Day plans? NOt sure if you celebrate it Bea. We're celebrating next weekend when it's my da's birthday so I'm trying not to do 2 weekends in a row. Enjoy the nice weather if you can!
Penny

CJ,
I hope it is healed too!!! It would be great if you didn't have to go on to more surgery...when do you start school again?
I start soon...still tired....oh well...no more gas vaginally-weird...but we'll see...I had diarrhea and nothing came out the wrong way-that makes me happy...
Penny-how long of lexapro? How are you feeling?
Bea-how r u?
Flower-you are probably a pro with the ostomy-what are you using? B

Beegirl,
I know... it would be awewsome if mine healed and I didn't have to have surgery again. We are praying for that. At least I am not passing stool. I did pass some gas yesterday. I am glad you didn't pass any stool! Maybe you really did just have "air" and not gas. Are you watching what you eat too? I have been avoiding gassy foods. I am completely off caffeinne.
School started this week for us. I job share with another teacher, so I only work 2 1/2 days a week which is great!
Do you start school after Labor Day?
Keep in touch.

Hello beegirl1 and everyone,
It has been I think since July since I have posted and so much has been posted since then that I haven't been able to catch up but am praying that everyone is hanging in there and doing okay and hopfully getting better if not hang in there; the time will come.
Beegirl1, thank you so much for your responses when I did post. I went through a phase where I wasn't feeling well over all and then had trouble logging in a few days then ended up having to travel two hours out of town to see a new colo rectal surgeon. Not sure if you remember all my story...long story as short as I can is that i had 4th degree tear from a 6.8lb baby (have an atty looking into the doc because many things don't seem right) but had several repaire operations with nothing but tons of pain, emotional pain by not being able to pick up my new first baby most of his first year (he is 15 months now) to having a colostomy hoping I would heal better with no feces coming around and prevent infections and so on. The last thing was June 25th I went in to have colostomy reversed to find that the pin hole was still there and was sent home when my colo rectal doc said there is nothing else i can do and found me a specialist two hours away. I went to him Aug 10 and had surgery Aug 20th; I was amazed at how fast things went. The doc said this was a very very complicated operation and he was going to "disect" me and completely separate the vagina and rectum and reconstruct everything just due to so much damage and take muscle from pelvic to use "good" muscle.
The operation went very very well and I was in the hospital six nights but almost think I should have stayed a bit longer. My pain tolerance is much lower than the average person something to do with the genetics of my liver..anyway...made it home...still in horrible pain much like the other opeartions but worse this time which was to be expected but am having a hard time managing the pain even to a bearable level. I go to the doc wed for my first post op appt and hopfully we can come up with something to help with this pain. What does everyone else take for pain? We have just about tried everything.
I am struggling so bad right now that my baby is walking around holding his arms up and doesn't understand why I can't pick him up or play with him like he is used to and it is killing me along with the pain. I'm also having problems with my ostomy being recessed and leaking under pouch so hoping it will pop back out very soon because having a colostomy is no big deal but dealing with little things like that on top of everything else just kinda puts the edge on if that makes any sense.
I am so sick of feeling helpless already and it hurts so bad to even walk. I am so praying that this will be the last operation, that my body will take and heal successfully. this doc has a 95% success rate at this particular proceedure but he was on top of things and definately knew a lot more than my previous surgeon except for he doesn't take how bad my pain is seriously as i would like him to. I guess he figures that what works for everyone else should work for me too....
Well, that is about all that is going on here. i will just be glad to be well again, as much as i don't want to go back to work now that i've been home with my son (i lost my job due to all of this) but I look forward to being able to buy my son clothes, puzzles, toys and just doing fun, normal things as in going to the park and so on that most people take for granted that I am dying to do with him! And I honestly hope to have another son one day down the road because i feel so cheated of my first son's first year that no mother should ever have to deal with like many of you i'm sure have also. But I also know that there is no option but to have c section but hey after all the operations and pain a c section should be a peice of cake!
well, I am going to go for now and I am going to try and stay up to date with everyone especially while I'm pretty confined; it's just hard when your in so much pain to just even concentrate to read or type or even watch tv in my case. I just lay here a lot and try to sleep as much as I can because I don't feel the pain when I'm asleep.
well, Thank you all for listening because even though my husband tries...no one understands and my family doesn't have a clue much less try to help or act concerned...they are wrapped up in "i've got to clean my house or go to the grocery store and so on" when I'm like....you have no clue what work is or what pain is...but that is a whole nother story. I am just so tired of feeling so alone! I have made it 15 months now so I am doing my best to keep my chin up and count my blessings knowing it could be much worse and at least I still have a roof over my head with no income things get really really really hard along with everything else.
talk to everyone soon, I hope!
Love,
Jess

Hello Everyone..........Beegirl...that is a good thing having nothing come thru the ole rvf site, so a big yay !!! sounds like things maybe going well fianlly. I have a question for you, how long after you had your ileo/rvf repair (dec 08 correct ?) did you wait until you went back to CRS for a look see at the rvf to see what it was doing as far as healing or not.....I am trying to decide as I don't want to go back just for the "fun" of it, you all know what I mean. I had my last repair jun 09, and then a month later my colostomy (jul 09) Do you think that month in between may have hindered the healing ?
Bea...How are you? Are you hanging in there....want you to know, been thinking about you and sure hope you are getting the answers you need. We need answers that either the docs can't or won't give us sometimes and its so frustrating.
Penny...What kind of ostomy did you have ? and for how long, did you have a rvf repair along with it at teh same time? i too developed mine from a spchint-plasty surgery, which that is still intact...
Cj...sounding good about you, keep fingers crossed!
I am dealing just fine with Stella Stoma. tried to choke her last week whem I changed the flange, but fixed it right away !! Went blackberry picking and I figured she would just run with me if I came across a big ole bear in the woods....but didn't see one..whew !
I use the Convatec system with the drainable pouches ( I hate the word bags ) as I empty her out 5-6 times at day easy....so the disposal ones would be a joke for me, I also have to "burp" the pouch as sometimes the gas builds up like a balloon.....a nasty task to be done. I put in a few stinky drops as my hubby calls them after i empty and rinse and that helps alot with the odor upon emptying.
well I have to work a full day today, a stressful day I'm sure as the reg. girl there doesn't like me, I am always upbeat, good mood and chipper whereas she is like a thundercloud....man if she only knew how good she has it, I have a sack of ^&*% hanging off my tummy !!
so chin up everyone, stay positive as sometimes that all we have...is our dertermination to beat these buggers.....

Hello everyone,
Jess, just wanted to tell you about Delaudid if you haven't tried it already. It was the only thing that worked for me. I too found that my first doctor didn't 'get it' when I talked about pain. After I got this prescrip life was much better. I hope it works for you or something comes along soon for you. What all have you tried. I hope all you have left is the healing.
Flower, I had an ileostomy which I had to change frequently. The doc who did it thought the fistula would heal on its own in 6 weeks and was going to reverse it without checking. I had 2 other doc's look at it, they said it was still there and recommended I not stay with that doctor, basically, so I switched. I had the ileo for a year and a half. Had one failed flap repair and then by a year later it had healed on its own. My CRS said it finally 'took' but I dont' see how a flap repair could take a year to 'take'. In any event I was in shock when I came out of my last anesthesia with the RN saying I didn't require the surgery because they couldn't find the fistula. Continue to spread your sunshine, flower. We need more of that and much less rain!
Thinking of you all,
Penny

Blueyes,
Wow.. You have been through a lot. I am so sorry!
SO, did you have a "graft" repair? Did they basically take tissue from somewhere in your pelvis and stitch it over the fistula? It does sound like it may have been more complicated than that for you since you said the doctor restructured the area between the vagina/rectum. Am I right? What kind of doctor performed this surgery?
I had a failed flap repair through the rectum 8 weeks ago. I haven't passed stool in 3 weeks. I am passing gas though. I am anticipating that I will need to have another surgery. My doctor said it could heal over... but I am doubtful. I do not have a colostomy either. I am hoping my fistula is still small.
I feel like I have "bad tissue" and have been wanting more info on a graft surgery.
I hope things continue to heal for you. Keep us posted. I don't know what I would do without this board since I have no friends to talk to about this.

Hey Penny,
I have had delaudid in the hospital but didn't know I could get it as a pain med in pill form or for use at home but I go to my first post op appt after this operation which I am dreading because it is a two hour drive away. I have had tried percacet, loratab, fetynal patches up to 100 mg, narco and oxy and nothing seems to work this time. I will sure talk to the doc about this wed. The percacet 2 5 mg every four hours to the minute gives barely any relief but the most I have found so far. Thank you for the advise! Delaudid and toridal always does pretty good in the hospital so I am really hoping the doc will listen to me; what do have to do these days for a doc to really listen to the pain your in; it seems like they don't think you should be in that much pain.
Well, I am so tired and still feeling awful from the pain and just the operation in general so I will be on soon!
love,
Jess

Hi All,
Jess/Blueseyes - I am very sorry to hear your story - especially as you are in pain which is terrible on top of everything else. I can't help on the pain front as I suspect I have average or possibly slightly higher than average pain tolerance. But I feel for you a really do. I wish I could help.
Penny, You had a repair which failed and then 'took' after about a year - which as you say seems odd. As I am now in the same situation of a failed repair witha stoma I just wondered how much stool got past your stoma and were you aware of passing gas through the fistula and passing any stool after the repair failed? I'm just wondering whether I should just leave the fistula and see what happens. However, my stoma is not 100% effective (I think because the stoma recesses below the skin when it is active and so allows stuff to get into the other bit of the stoma (does that makes sense?). I don't know if any thing can be done about that.
Flower, Many thanks for your info - did I tell you that I found the clinic you mentioned and two other people have also recommended it? I think this will be my first port of call. I am feeling a bit better in myself - a bit flat but not so upset and down as I was. Being back at work helps too. The psychological strain of this thing (the hope, not daring to hope, pretending not to hope but still hoping, then failure and the realisation of how much you were hoping) is very trying!
Beegirl I hope all is still progressing well for you.
CJ - fingers crossed that your repair has worked after all. I gather that some failure early on does not mean it can't still heal so it might have taken.
Many thanks for all your posts support etc - hang in there girls!

hello everyone !! Just came back from my reg doc...yearly physical..that sort of thing, and I consented to a female exam only if she could have a peek at the vag end of the rvf......she said that while she saw inflammation at the site, she saw no discernable hole......BUT, it may still be there, small and the tract may have collasped down since the colostomy and is healing...the only way is to have a dye test...?
OK.......what's this dye test ?
She said to wait it out a few more months before I go back to CLE (3 hour drive) to get it checked out. Could I have my general surgeon here locally, who did the ostomy, run the dye test?
How is everyone doing? The sun is shining today, walked the dogs and heading into work for a few hours after I tend to Stella (we celebrated with an iced capp. after the doc appt ) %-)
Oh and what is this recessed stoma and how does this happen, should I be aware of this too? How and why does it recess? can it be prevented?
spirits up everyone and hang in there
