Research Rosacea- it often runs in the family of people who suffer from these symptoms.
I have the same problems- I get very blotchy and red when I am drinking alcohol or if I have any sudden change in emotion (any emotion). I never knew that Rosacea ran in my family, but after some investigation I learned my father has a mild case. Rosacea treatment can also help this condition. I suggest looking into it.

I am not Asian but suffer from a red face after drinking alcohol. It only happens from time to time but I light up like a beacon when it does happen. I have a line that goes through the top of the heart and anything above is red while anything below is not. Sometimes if I just keep drinking, it can go away. Breathing can get quite laboured as well. If I have been drinking every night for a while, as happens on business trips etc, sometimes just a sip of beer can set it off. I am watching out to see if there is any pattern in my food or drinking that starts it. To date there is nothing concrete but Red Wine or Sake seem to spark it off more than other drinks...

i suffer the same condition only sometimes, i'm not of any any recent asian desent that i know of (tho i wish i was, as i'm of the irish'pink' variety of human-which i wish i wasn't) it dosn't seem to happen so often now, i'm 42, but when it does it causes me major embarrassement for some reason to the extent that i don't like going out any more and have isolated myself, i'm glad i found this forum as i taut i was the only one with this problem, and the thing is it dosn;t matter what i drink-it can happen any time anywhere and i've had some nasty comments as a result-hence my staying home most of my recent life, which is making me very depressed-my doctor dosn't know what to say or do about it-and the same with others i've tried-one thing tho, is that i used to be very shy-causing redness, could this be a factor? please help as my live on hold...

hello, i too have that problem, but i have several medical problems that have been discovered that im sure are the colprit. first off, i have a metabolic disorder where i cannot break down certain carbs because of lack of enzym. also i have a problem with poor circulation due to my hypothyroidism.i dont condone smoking but it helps while drinking to close blood vessels and construct the blood i get in my face. i will however try the antacid because this seems more reasonable. however, u might want to think about getting your thyroid checked.

I always get it when i first start drinking. I get blotchy red around my face/neck/ears and they all get hot. After a while it all blends together and goes away. I have never tried pepsid and will have to see if it works next time. Sometimes if doesn't happen and usually it happens if I am in a warmer room. If drinking outside on a cool night it doesn't seem to happen as often or as severe. I have recently just tried looking to see what it was in case I am developing an allergy to alcohol

I noticed the same problem happening with me and started watching food patterns and found out it was related to a wheat allergy. Now I have cut wheat out of my diet, which includes beer, sadly. If I don't want to turn red while out, liquor only and watch what I eat very carefully. So far, no redness!!!

So... for as long as I can remember i have gotten this weird red and hot splotchyness all over my cheeks, neck, chest and upper arms. I have found that in my younger life it came from any rapid change in emotions. If i was to get up in class to give a speech, when i was nervous, angry, embarrassed, anxious. And then I realized it happens when I'm on the phone for a while, when i'm driving in my car and the sun hits me just right, when I'm getting ready to go out, after i get out of the shower and especially when i'm drinkig. The heat starts and i know i'm turning red. People will comment on it and tell me that i'm breaking out or something and it's really embarrassing. I'm constantly running to the bathroom to apply more make up and that just makes it look purple. It goes away after a while but I just wish there was some diagnosis. What the hell is this???????

I've had this problem ever since high school and college. My parents were pretty concerned and have been researching the issue. My face seems to get red but only in certain areas. My skin itches and I have an intense burning feeling on my face after only a few drinks.

Please visit this wikipedia. It actually shows that indiv with these symptoms of alcohol actually have an increased risk of certain throat cancers, and related alcohol problems with the kidneys and liver. The red reaction triggers certain enzymes that are carcinogens! I've talked with a doctor and since college I've been highly recommended to either stop drinking all together or only very occasionally. The red flush seems not to be as bad now that Im down to 3 drinks a week.

I've been drinking alcohol for years (20+) on a moderate basis and never had this condition. Then it started about 3 years ago. I told my Dr. but he though I might be developing some sort of allergy to alcohol. Then this morning, there was a story on Good Morning America that addressed this to some degree. There is a study in Japan regarding Asian Flush and one of the things they have found is a high correlation between that and Barrett's Esophagus. This is potentially a really serious issue because Barrett's is a pre-curser to esophageal cancer.
I'm not saying that everyone has this but you shouldn't dismiss the symptoms so lightly.

I just saw an article that says redness of the face and neck with consumption of alcohol has been linked with esophogeal cancers. . . apparently those that experience this symptom are more likely to get esophogeal cancer. . epecially with excess drinking.

Hey,
I have asian flush and have been searching for a way to overcome it for years. It can be very frustrating as you all probably know - i even went to see a doctor who told me that it was caused by a genetic enzyme deficiency and that there was nothing i could do about it.
I have since done a lot of research on the internet and have come across a few remedies that work very well. The key was understanding the problem and the causes and then finding ways to inhibit the reaction. The commonly mentioned remedy of using antacids before drinking works ok, but there are much more effective formulas available on the internet that work significantly better. Beware of miracle 'pills' being offered, i have found them to be just repackaged overpriced antacids.
