I need information about retropharyngeal absess patophysiology. My 8 years old son often has problems with sore throat and cough. He takes antibiotics and I am worried because of amount of medicines he has to use.

Retropharyngeal absess is usually complication of an acute tonsillitis. Any of microorganisms that may cause tonsillitis may be the causative agent of RA. Most commonly staphs, haemophilus and pneumococci are found in specimen. It can be represented in mononucleosis. RA is also documented without any prior history of tonsillitis. Antibiotic therapy is recommended.
