Did you ever find out what was wrong? I'm 22 and the doctor says I most likely have endometriosis. She palpated my abdomen at the doctor's office and right after I got home, I started my period, but it had a foul odor and I have no idea why since that's never happened before.

Just throwing this out there: it might be because you have a cold, sinus infection, the flu, or some other illness, not necessarily a vaginal infection. Also, everyone states to take antibiotics or take medicine /creams to fix vaginal issues. What if you're on antibiotics (for that or something else) and that is what is making it smell? I mean, antibiotics are known to give stomach problems, gas, diarrhea, why not smelly periods? Especially since periods by definition contain bacteria. Maybe the antibiotics are flushing them out through the menstrual excretion.

I always had really heavy periods when I was younger. It could simply be something like that. Usually the first day or too is the heaviest. For most people, it takes a little while for their cycles to normalize. I would talk to your mom or guardian right away. If your period is too heavy for a pad, you may want to consider a tampon or menstrual cup. If your family is against that, you will need to set an alarm and wake yourself up to change your pad once or twice a night.

I used to think it is just me.. glad to know someone else's lining also isn't shedding as fast as before and it's shedding hanging out before it passes making it smell terribly! I'm 42 also!!

Ladies, I too had meat-smell period the last few months. I chalked it up to aging and yeah, sure, blood lining taking longer to shed is probably due to hormonal changes.

However, that smell is nevertheless caused by excess bacteria (as unshed lining starts to decay), which does in fact mean mild bacterial vaginosis. I was in denial until I had unprotected sex with my partner Friday: fish bomb, confirmed mine had turned into full blown BV. On my way to the pharmacist now for an antibiotic, and the grocery store to stock up on yogurt.

You don't have to suffer the smell. Even if it's not a bad case of BV and you don't feel an antibiotic is necessary, experiment with probiotics and extra liquids and fruits and veg in your diet. If your hormones have changed and your period takes longer than it used to to drop, you can probably still support the growth of "good bacteria" in your vagina's ecosystem, to keep the bacteria that's growing off your slow-to-shed uterine lining from taking over and causing the steak odor (or from turning into a full BV infection like it did for me).

Doctors don't know sh*t about female bodies. I've gone several times and they said there's nothing we can do go to a naturalist or something like that. I always smell like sh*t even when I'm the cleanest I can be. I have all day foul-smelling discharge and my period smells like sh*t. Also my poo is yellow and the doctor said he can't do anything about my pooping yellow and suggested it was my diet but my diet is 100% fine.
