For 10 years now I have been getting excruciating attacks in the middle of my upper abdomen that shoot through to my back. The pain is unbearable and can last anywhere from 30 minutes to almost 24 hours. The pain comes on quickly and severely out of no where. I can get this pain regularly, but sometimes I don't get an attack for months at a time, and other times it occurs much more frequently. I haven't been able to trace a pattern for a trigger. Sometimes this occurs the day (or a few days) after drinking alcohol, however sometimes I drink alcohol and I don't get an attack at all. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, sweating yet hot and cold at the same time, high blood pressure during an attack, trouble breathing, moving, and walking because of the pain, extreme weakness, dizziness and sometimes fainting for a minute or so. The main issue is the abdominal pain. I have developed severe anxiety and paranoia from these attacks. I am terrified to get them. They are too painful and no pain medication helps. I have had many tests: Ultrasounds, endoscopy's, blood tests, urine tests, CT scan. I am currently waiting for an MRI. The last time I went to emergency (3 weeks ago), they mentioned it may be nerve related. They suggested this may be a rare disease called Porphyria. I've never heard of this, and most doctors haven't either which is why no one mentions it. All of my symptoms match up, however confirming a diagnosis is very difficult. I just completed a 24 hour urine test and additional blood tests to try to see if this could be what's wrong. The only thing that relieves the pain slightly is being bent over in the fedal position with someone putting pressure on my back where the pain shoots through. The pressure on my back also hurts, however it alleviates the pain from the front slightly (only slightly). It is possible that this could not be it. I also went off birth control pills, because this can lead to porphyria. I also tend to have trouble falling asleep at night. I saw a gastro specialist who said when I get the pain, to go to the hospital and have a CT scan taken during an attack. This feels tough to do but I will try and report back. I have also been referred to an internal medicine doctor. These attacks are effecting my life in many ways, and I just want to know what it is so I can help it or learn how to better deal with attacks and relieve pain. If someone has any information or any questions, please contact me.

When you get these attacks log everything you ate and how you felt emotionally, what your bowels and urine looked like. Look up Candida spittle test. You might have bio toxins or heavy metal toxins. Talk about this with your GI.
Excercise to help metabolism and cut down portions at each meal maybe instead of meals a series of small snacks daily to see if that helps. Since the GB was removed your liver has to do the work, healthy detox of liver to keep it functioning and no alcohol. Give it a run and log what you did and you felt daily.

I didn't think I would find anyone who had this. I feel comforted. I guess it is IBS. Scary however, comes out of nowhere. Alcohol seemes to help, probably just takes away the fear.

I didn't realize so many others are experiencing the pain I have been getting. I had my gallbladder removed 7 months ago yet I am getting the same pain which normally wakes me from a deep sleep. It usually lasts about an hour and is accompanied by sharp lower back pain. It feels like glass being twisted in my upper stomach and it gets so bad I start sweating. I have vomited with it as well but not often. I have had all sorts of tests done but my Dr's are stumped as to what is causing it. Once it subsides, I feel so worn out and drained for ages. My GI suggested my going to the ER for a CT scan when I get it, but by the time I got there and sat waiting (which is normal at our ER) it will have more than likely stopped. I am 70 and can't have MRI's due to my pacemaker, so unless they get me straight in and do a CT scan, there is nothing else I can see to help find what it is. To top it off, I would have to drive myself to the ER as my husband has Parkinson's and with the pain going on, I can't see myself driving!! The pain hits whenever it decides to & I get it every week or so, occasionally even during the day. Sure hope someone can get to the bottom of what it causing it!!!!

Wow Im having this same pain. Its nice to find others who are experiencing the same thing. I had my gallbladder out 13 years ago. It runs from my neck to my abdomen. Ive brought this up multiple times with my doctor but he has no idea what it is. All my liver numbers come back fine. He says its probably just indigestion. It doesnt feel like indigestion but burping does seem to make it feel better.
