For 10 years now I have been getting excruciating attacks in the middle of my upper abdomen that shoot through to my back. The pain is unbearable and can last anywhere from 30 minutes to almost 24 hours. The pain comes on quickly and severely out of no where. I can get this pain regularly, but sometimes I don't get an attack for months at a time, and other times it occurs much more frequently. I haven't been able to trace a pattern for a trigger. Sometimes this occurs the day (or a few days) after drinking alcohol, however sometimes I drink alcohol and I don't get an attack at all. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, sweating yet hot and cold at the same time, high blood pressure during an attack, trouble breathing, moving, and walking because of the pain, extreme weakness, dizziness and sometimes fainting for a minute or so. The main issue is the abdominal pain. I have developed severe anxiety and paranoia from these attacks. I am terrified to get them. They are too painful and no pain medication helps. I have had many tests: Ultrasounds, endoscopy's, blood tests, urine tests, CT scan. I am currently waiting for an MRI. The last time I went to emergency (3 weeks ago), they mentioned it may be nerve related. They suggested this may be a rare disease called Porphyria. I've never heard of this, and most doctors haven't either which is why no one mentions it. All of my symptoms match up, however confirming a diagnosis is very difficult. I just completed a 24 hour urine test and additional blood tests to try to see if this could be what's wrong. The only thing that relieves the pain slightly is being bent over in the fedal position with someone putting pressure on my back where the pain shoots through. The pressure on my back also hurts, however it alleviates the pain from the front slightly (only slightly). It is possible that this could not be it. I also went off birth control pills, because this can lead to porphyria. I also tend to have trouble falling asleep at night. I saw a gastro specialist who said when I get the pain, to go to the hospital and have a CT scan taken during an attack. This feels tough to do but I will try and report back. I have also been referred to an internal medicine doctor. These attacks are effecting my life in many ways, and I just want to know what it is so I can help it or learn how to better deal with attacks and relieve pain. If someone has any information or any questions, please contact me.
