ok so i've had the same issuse as everyone; severe/continuous pain in the neck, shoulders, back and chest areas after consuming alcohol; accompanied by sweating and just a general crappy feeling that lasts for 15-45 mins. nothing makes me feel better...so i've been experimenting and narrowed it down to these 3 triggers (now don't hold me to this coz it might be different for the rest of u)...i found that i get this feeling when (a) i drink rum (b) i drink brandy (c) i have not eaten or had any other non-alcoholic fluids a few hours before drinking alcohol...and it always happens with liquor and not beer...so i'm guessing that higher concentrations of alcohol on an empty stomach = our common shitty feeling...so ummm make sure u've had something to eat and drink (not just a bite sized snack or sip of something) b4 u have any shots or liquor based drinks...yes the feeling goes after a while and i'm able to carrying on drinking; but i've also found that if i drink a lot of water right when i get this feeling, that it doesn't last as long......i'm still working on it so if anything now comes up i'll let u know and if anyone else can find a solution plz let us know!!

It's great (and sad...) to hear so many are dealing with this! I'm 21, and it is literally immediately after the first sip of wine or rum (I haven't yet experimented with beer) that my back/shoulders/neck tighten. I wouldn't describe it as excruciating pain, but it is incredibly uncomfortable. As others have stated, it is like my muscles are cramping -- but never in my chest as some have noted. It now shoots down the back of my legs and even to my fingertips, but it is mostly concentrated on my back and neck. It doesn't much seem to matter whether I have eaten loads, nothing, sugar, or not. If anyone figures this out...we'd all love to hear it! My mother has a slight alcohol allergy (red in the face), but she has never heard of anything like this... Hope this helps as we compile data!

A friend of mine told me about this happening to her. I thought to myself how peculiar. Now I see other people with the same thing, and am even more interested in finding out what this is. I hope all of you can get some answers.

Well what prompted me to start Googling this was I just took a normal adult dose of Nyquil and within 2 minutes felt that old aching pain in my shoulder. I know Nyquil has a bit of alcohol in it - but this is insane!

I really don't drink much, I don't like the taste of alcohol except in wimpy drinks like Mike's Hard Lemonade - however whether it's beer, wine, or some interesting mix - I always get aching pain in my neck and shoulders, often going down my upper arms and upper legs. It feels like an adrenaline rush in a way - like being angry or about to run a race.

Anyway it's pretty dumb that only ONE SIP of any drink (and apparenlty now Nyquil too) will do this. My mom has the exact same symptoms and we "race" to see who feels it first.

However I'd really like to know if there's any cause for concern. Do I/we have an alcohol allergy? The feeling goes away after 10-15 minutes and doesn't return with further drinking. But I'd like to know if I'm endangering myself by drinking more than this!

What exactly is the mechanism at work here and why do only a few people have this condition? I'd really like to know.

A friend used to call them "dying pains" and I never knew what she was talking about until some years back when I noticed my arms would get this heavy, achey feeling as soon as I had a drink.

I drink rarely and so thought it was just some getting used to. I actually got on a medical talk show with Dr. Dean Edell and he assured me it was my muscles relaxing from the alcohol.

But still, I dunno...I'm not 100% sure of that answer!

Everything this post is speaking of...me too. This has been going on for about 5+ years.
It's usually drinks like champagne, margarita, wine...even wine coolers etc. The pain is intense. Enough to make you sweat. It usually lasts for about 20-30 min. Then subsides. So, I thought, okay, don't drink on an empty stomach, eat something, bread, chips, whatever. Doesn't matter. Pain still comes on.

You know what? I'm being examined for gallbladder disease. I had a HIDA scan yesterday, and I'm waiting for results. Seems this is one of the symptoms. My doc stated that if it was an actual allergy to alcohol, I would have more "classic" allergic symptoms like, hives/flushing of the skin, vomiting, loose stool, swelling, itching...that sort of thing.

Don't rule out peptic ulcers either!! But seriously consider your gallbladder. After the
gallbladder completely empties (30 min or so..wink wink), there isn't any bile left, hence
the pain subsides, and the alcohol moves on down the road.

You can add me to the list too, get pain in right shoulder worst with red wine which comes on about 5 minutes after drinking a 1/2 glass. Goes away again in about five minutes. About a 2 or 3 on the pain scale so not severe but annoying. Beer don't really get it so can't understand it.

Going to the docs to try and get it sorted - worried about Hodgkins but my symptoms aren't really consistent with that. Must be some other explanation but have yet to find it. Weird thing was this pain was originally under my ears, then over the course of 12 weeks migrated to my neck and is now onto my shoulder, I no longer get the pain in my face or neck.

I am having the same exact thing I am hearing being described here! It is really crazy to me that a ton of people online across many different medical boards are complaining about this and that when you pull a search on this no specific illnesses are coming up.

I have noticed that immediately after my first drink of "red" wine I feel this pain between my shoulder blades. It is dull/achey spasm like to mild burning. I am beginning to believe that it is connected to my stomach. I usually take Prilosec and when I haven't been regular with it, this happens. I also feel like I have the urge to burp or swallow "something down" in my throat. This never happens when I drink beer (and I am a regular Guiness drinker) or even liquor drinks. It totally makes sense that all the acid in the wine may be affecting my stomach. I am just guessing here though. I love red wine and this is really annoying, but I am beginning to think I should just give it up and stick with beer. Also, I do not have this problem with white wine. As other posters have mentioned this pain eventually does stop, but in my case after this pain starts I will just finish the glass of wine or pour it out and grab a beer.... so maybe that is why mine stops. I know that alcohol can aggrevate stomach problems, maybe that is why people that are drinking beer are hurting, to me there seems to be NO DOUBT this must be related to the high acidic amount in the red wine and my stomach.

Oh yeah, another way I have to descibe the pain between my shoulder blades is this... it feels as if I am pulling my shoulder blades together in tight trying to hold a weight between the two of them. Like I am packing a weight around on my back with the pressure radiating from the inside out. Really weird!

I have the same problem too.. when I drink any type of alcohol (including beer) I have this awful pain coming on.. :( pain starts from the shoulder and goes further through my arm to reach my fingers.. [It's always the LEFT side]

I still haven't visited a doctor because I have an "on the spot solution".. Whenever I want to drink, I should take a certain pill called "Muscerol".. It is a medicine that helps muscles relax..

Before new years' eve, I started taking this medicine 2 days earlier (once a day) and on the 31st of dec I took around 2 or 3 pills.. To my surprise, I drank 3 cups (vodka & juice) and I didn't feel any pain :)
A friend of mine told me to try this medicine and I was surprised that it worked

I think that practicing sport for the shoulder would help decrease this pain..

I also have similar symptoms.

If anyone has found anything, please make sure to post it and let us know!

Thanks!

I'm only 24 and I get this too. I was looking it up because it only does it with cheap sugary type drinks like the guy earlier said! Wine coolers and lemonade are the only things that have done it to me, so it isn't limited to alcoholic beverages. Try a sweet lemonade and you'll know what I mean.

The pain though has went to slight discomfort, to omg, I can't move. It's a terrible burning sensation, like my muscles are cramping as others have said. Ever further, it feels like large knots are actually forming in my shoulders and back. I'm always wondering if this has anything to do with Hodgkins. Anybody find out what the heck this is?

I get it from any drink with sugar and carbonation but especially with alcohol. However I usually drink wine, sometimes with soda water and it never happens with wine. Tonight I had 2 rye & diet cokes and then 3 hours later had a cranberry juice and then the pain started. It hurts like hell for around 15 or 20 minutes then goes away. Occasionally it has happened without alcohol(regular pop or juice) but not as severe .
