I have this issue too.  I never was a big drinker but on occasion would socially.  However it has been years because it makes my muscles tighten up in the neck and shoulder area.  Uncomfortable feeling.  When I asked a doctor about it I was looked at like I had a mental illness.  I have no desire to drink because why drink something that is going to make your body tighten up and feel horrible.  I was at a women's expo and they had wine that they were trying to sell.  I decided to try it just to see and from one taste I could immediately feel my muscles tighten.    I am amazed that there is no answer online anywhere.

I have this too! No one understands when I try to explain it to them. I get the pain generally between my neck and shoulders and various points on my back, a deep muscle ache sort of pain. Usually it goes away within about 5-10 minutes but I can't move or anything until it does. People must think I'm odd that I just stop dancing and go and sit down. The funny thing is it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the amount of alcohol I drink, I can drink loads and not be affected, or I can drink hardly anything and suffer from it. Utterly bizarre.

Sometimes when I'm drinking a margarita or a mojito I get intense pain/burning in my shoulders & chest.  I only need to drink a little bit and could happen.  I lasts for about 15 or more minutes.  What's the deal here ??

I think this is a glad issue where the your body does not process the alcohol. I can drink rye and water all night, but if I have more than 2 rye and coke drinks, I suffer from intense shoulder pain that seems to come right from the bone. It comes on quick, lasts about 20 min, then goes away just as quick leaving me feeling strange because there is no lingering effects. I think it is from how your body processes the alcohol and sugar combination. I try to avoid drinks with excess amounts of sugar...margaritas, wine coolers, etc. That seems to do the trick.

This has actually Been happening to me too and i don't know why. This actually happened to me last night. I got one of those little $1 bottles of vodka and I mixed in in my pepsi and like 5 minutes after drinking the pain in my shoulders started to happen then it somehow feels like it starts getting more intense but stops after 20 minutes. I notice when I get like this I tend to jump in the shower and let hot water hit me it feels like it's helping relax my muscles in my chest and back when u sit in the hot water. It's weird cause it only happens once in a while cause I can drink any wine or liquor and sometimes it would happen and then later on in the weeks or months I'll have that same wine or liquor that caused that pain it wouldn't happen. I also notice i do get burpy and when I burp (which I have a hard time making myself on command) the pain starts to dull. There's gotta be some type of name for this issue but I think the only way to diagnose this issue is to go to the dr and have testing done. Ugh I hate the dr :-(

I have the same thing.

It usually comes on when I drink alcohol with juices.

I remember being 21 and it happening after drinking the alcopop reef.

2 kids later- it happens when I drink Tia Maria with Orange Juice, and now today I've just recovered from 20 minutes of shoulder pain, tight chest and sick feeling after Malibu with Pineapple- only a few sips.

I've not eaten a meal for about 5 hours.

It doesn't happen everytime, and only seems to happen after Tia Maria and OJ- but its my favourite drink :O( tastes just like Jaffa Cakes or Terrys Choc Orange!

I'd love to know why it happens x

I think the person who says it has to do with sulfites might be on to something. I found this same pain happens when I eat marichino cherries which contain alot of sulfites in it. I don't have this happen if I drink shots of tequila but does if I drink margaritas no matter how good the alcohol is its the mix not the alcohol for me. Doesn't happen with everything alcohol. I can drink beers and I hate beer but does happen with some wines. I've had this happen all my life without definite answers until now.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one. This happened to me last night for maybe the 4th or 5th time. I do like to drink so I am lucky it happens so infrequently. My trigger is always whiskey and after reading the post above I suspect coke and red bull. The pain is intense and it feels like my neck muscles are trying to pull my head down into my chest, it's some serious cramps.

PLEASE READ.

For new visitors to this thread, please see your doctor and run tests to determine the possibility of Hodgkin's Lymphoma --a cancer of the lymph nodes.

Pain as some of you describe it, is uniquely linked to lymphoma. The pain sets in almost immediately after taking a sip of alcohol and will last 20-30 minutes whether you continue to drink or not. The most common site of the pain is neck, shoulder, and chest --usually concentrated on one side.

Message me if I can be of help. I was diagnosed with it in 06 and am now in good health.

Jessica I'm glad you felt it necessary to post this but please make sure that you tell people there are other more significant symptoms to go along with signs of lymphoma not just pain from drinking alcohol. Sometimes you bring fear not awareness. And yes I've been "tested" for lymphoma but only because I had a wide range of other symptoms ie: fever, pain, swelling lymphnodes and a lump in my groin. Still not lymphoma. Just saying.

I'm another who thought this was only happening to them. This has happened to me for at least 15 years (and I'm certain longer than that), usually with alcohol and very occasionally with deep fried foods. I never remember to ask my doctor about it as I don't drink much and so generally forget it happens.

A.Mark. have you ever had your gall bladder checked? Just saying fried foods can bring gall bladder problems if it's bad and it does feel like the same pain. I did have mine checked and found it was distended but not enough of a problem for it to be removed. Just a thought for you. Unfortunately it was my husband gall bladder when he experienced the same pain.

I'm def not telling anyone not to get checked for a serious illness but this has been happening to me for 20 years. For me it's extremely infrequent, I call it whiskey neck.
