My 13 year old son noticed that there is a small drop of blood on the tip of his penis after urinating. He has no pain when urinating or any kind of discomfort. He is very sporty and is in intense swimming training at the moment. Any idea what this could be?

It isn’t something that you like a mother want to hear but since your son is into swimming it could be related with cold water.  Blood after urination is common sign of urinary infection but this doesn’t have to necessary be the main problem. Similar situation has happened to my boyfriend last year. It was very cold winter and one day after urination he noticed small spot of blood. First he freaked out and he was thinking about the worst.

I managed to convince him to go and visit the doctor. I am aware that as a woman we can’t understand how uncomfortable this examination can be but he lived. At the end it was just a minor infection caused by the cold. Antibiotics and keeping warm was the only thing the doctor has prescribed so at the end it wasn’t that bad.

Take your son to the doctor or let your husband to do this if he feels uncomfortable going with you.
