So i recently noticed a small lump in my lower right eyelid (closer to the inner corner of the eye than the outer corner). its hard and somewhat painful to the touch but the outside skin isnt red. What is red however is the skin behind it which is in contact with the actual eyeball (at least redder than the one on the left eye). It began with noticeable swelling which has died down by now but the lump is still there.

Hello.
The symptoms you're describing in your lower right eyelid could be indicative of a few different conditions, often related to the glands or tissues around the eye. Here are some possibilities:
-
Chalazion: This is a small, usually painless lump or swelling that appears on your eyelid. A chalazion occurs when a meibomian gland (an oil gland in the eyelid) becomes blocked and inflamed. While they typically start as painful, they often turn into a painless, firm lump. Redness and swelling can occur in the surrounding area.
-
Stye (Hordeolum): A stye is an infection of the oil glands in the eyelid, often caused by bacteria. It typically appears as a painful red bump, sometimes with a small pus spot at the center. The skin around a stye can be swollen and red.
-
Conjunctivitis: While this primarily affects the conjunctiva (the clear layer over the white part of the eye), it can sometimes be associated with swelling or lumps in the eyelid if the inflammation is severe.
-
Other Eyelid Issues: There are other less common conditions that can cause lumps in the eyelid, including cysts, benign growths, or, rarely, tumors.
Treatment may vary depending on the cause, ranging from warm compresses and gentle massage for chalazions and styes, to medication if an infection is present. Let us know what doctor told you.
