Hey I am 26 yeards old and have been experiencing the same pop rocks sensation in the back of my neck under my skull for my entire life. For me it feels like bubbles being sucked through a straw and it actually is kinda whats happening. It is spinal decompression and the gases that are released travel through vessels that run up and down your spine. You can hear it because this takes place right outside your inner ear canal in your throat. Since your throat is a hollow structure the sounds in amplified and is recieved as being somewhat loud through your ear canal. I am not a doctor and I haven't had any procedure to diagnose this. I do have 3 MD's in my family and they were able to fill me in when I did ask about it. Unlike yourself I never really worried about it too much because it didn't hurt and didn't cause me any symptoms, it's just really strange lol. I truley believe you may be experiencing some of your symptoms due to the stress and anxiety your experiencing because of associating the sensation with an illness or problem with your body. However if looking into it a little more to confirm its harmless makes your feel better that is never a stupid thing to do. I just hope you can try and relax until your figure out exactly what it is, I know what it's like to feel anxious and worried and it's difficult to control. I wish you luck in solving the problem :)

Wow I'm glad to know I'm not the only one I've been wondering for years what the cracking sound is in my head. I'm 18 years old and I think this started happening at like 13 14? I kind Of ignored it for a while but this year it's really bothered me.!it doesn't happen all the time though. But when I move my head left or right up down slight movement I'll hear it crack. I allso have connective tissue disorder could this be related? I all so was thinking maybe from lack of nutrients growing up? Idunno I'm scared. Oh and I have chronic head aches if that helps!

Hello, I'm only 17, and tonight I laid my head back on my chair, and I can hear a cracking noise on the back of my skull. I can hear it every time I lay my head back on something. It sounds like there's already a crack there (as far as I know, there shouldn't be), and it's just cracking more and getting bigger.
I haven't been to the doctors about it yet, I just noticed it about an hour ago, and it's too late to go to the doctors now. So, I was just hoping, maybe someone might have an idea, before I do go?
Thank you, anything is appreciated.

I have Arnold Chiari .. type 1 .. had the surgery.. my symptoms before were very close to Multiple Sclerosis.. it is a common misdiagnosis. I went to someone that manipulated my next 2 mos ago.. brought back all my symptoms that I had prior to my surgery. I have {cape-like} numbness around my neck and shoulders along with pain and cracking. Even going to medical specialist...ie.. neurologist.. neurosurgeon.. orthopedist.. they kind of poo poo my symptoms as being a complainer.. Even after having the surgery.. get the run around. It is very frustrating when medical doctor are not upfront with a patient. Considering going out on permanent disability.. So.. if you have Chiari... seek a specialist in that area.. neurosurgeon.. have them do a CSF Flow Study MRI .. Aneursyms are a different thing all together.. those are usually caused by uncontrolled high bloodpressure.. I work in a neurosurgical ICU .. usually patients have repeated Headaches.. Then there are congential arterial venous malformations in the brain that can bleed also.. presenting mainly with headache.. usually severe.. with loss of vision.. stroke like symptoms.. seek emergency help if you have these symptoms.

I have arnold chiari malformation type one ..been decompressed.. I went to someone recently to massage my neck she manipulated my neck to bring my symptoms back.. Aneursyms are usually caused by uncontrolled hypertension.. also just incase any one that uses Meth.. we get alot of aneursym patients from this drug.. it basically weakens vessels in your brain...not to mention your heart. In regards to Chiari this puts pressure on your brain stem .. bringing on MS type symtoms.. have a Mri CSF Flowstudy to diagnose condition.. go to a specialist in this area.. Neurosurgeon. World of Arnold Chiari Malformation org has alot of information and list of doctors.

I have been dealing with what I thought has been "waking up with a stiff neck" since at least October 2011. It evolved into neck cracking sounds (like cracking your knuckles). I went to my family doctor who ended up saying I could be stressed and definitely need to stretch more! Lately, I feel bones making that knuckle cracking sound in my left shoulder area when sleeping on my left side, coupled with pain in the back of my neck when looking up to watch my tv in the living room.

I can play ball pain free but sometimes when lunging low quickly for a ball, it feels like my skeleton jumped out of my body (tingly jolt around the neck). Now I'm afraid because raising my eye brows is no longer a smooth motion (it's jumpy) and my left hand is slightly tingly/not as strong after lightly sitting on it last week.

I've neglected to go back to the doctor because even though I have insurance, I'm afraid of the bill that still comes due to my high deductible.

Thoughts (pinched nerve, slipped disc)?

Have any of you been tested for Superior Canal Dehiscence? I have that in both ears, and I hear those things constantly. Mention to your dr that you would like to have a ct scan on your temporal bones :)

I have been calling it a crunching noise accompanied with a noise like your stomach makes when it is hungry or digesting, like little bubbles of liquid being forced through some tiny tube or being squished around. I have weakness in my left leg to my toes a lot, and tingling. I have been feeling some sort of spasm in the muscle in, on, or around my heart for a couple years now not sure what it is or if it is even my heart but it's very uncomfortable. I am 26 yrs old. I have only one explanation that ,ales sense to me at this point and have made a doctors appointment to find out if I have chiari malformation type 1,2,3,or 4. One in 10k have type one it is where the back of your skull doesnt grow just enough to acomidate the growth of your brain and your brain winds up being squeezed down into your spinal column like a tube of toothpaste. Type 2 where the spinal cord developes outside the spinal column half way down your back, which winds up tugging your brain into your spinal column just the same. Any strain on your brain will affect every function of your body negatively. Along with chiari malformation there comes ehlers danlos. I have been able to bend in ways most other have not my whole life. I can hyper extend everything. I can even bend all the fingers backward into a perfect L shape. This is sometimes found with chiari malformation. It is degenerative connective tissue disorder :( I have though I had arthritis since I was 8 and have broken my wrists 4 times and my ankle twice. Some thing is clearly wrong. So I have decided to go on a 80 10 10 Raw Vegan Diet. Not to loose weight but because of this mans words " Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food." - Hippocrates 6 people With type 1 & 2 diabetes where out into food rehab for 30 days. They wher young old and skinny and fat ( anyone can get diabetes) they reversed there illness in that time. Proof is in the pudding you can't find anything without harmful chemicals pumped into it. I will continue to make sure if there is something very wrong I find out what it is but if they makes me feel better and all these symptoms go away than even if there is something wrong I really won't care to know anymore being I such thriving form. I'll keep you posted I have a great ppo btw which helps gets you more answers but you still have to root through just as many incompitant doctors I'm afraid.

I have had the same thing for years. Most Internet searches won't tell you much about it. I have had migraines, but they went away (due to pregnancy) and the noises still happen, mostly when I'm laying down. I don't have any of the other symptoms discribed in the other comments, but I did go to a chiropractor a bit ago and he said there were a few things slightly out of place in my neck (causing headaches). I hope that helps with the search for causes!

I was wondering if you ever found anyway to overcome the crackling you are hearing since posting, as I suffer from it too and it is driving me crazy and affecting my ability to concentrate!
Thanks.

:-|Hi I have the same thing happening to me.I manage it with Mucinex DM 1200mg anything with less MG will not work.I have allergies but was rear ended and it has been hurting ever sense.I think it is fluid buildup and allergies. If I take this medicine every 12 hour as directed it will kill the pain and stop the crackling sound and skull pressure.I have been careless and have been taken it 4 hour late and am in pain today and there is a lot of crackling in ears and painful popping in neck. This stuff works.I found out about it from an allergy doctor 20 years ago.Now you can by it over the counter in 14 count or 28.It is extensive but the pain is so bad I can not do anything. If you can not get medicine use a heating pad or if you have an electric heater close your bedroom up and put it on and lay down and breath the dry heat in clears up crackling and pain.I hope this will help someone it has helped me.Take care Rachel
