I have been dealing with a similar if not the same problem you have. It started a long time ago. I am 50 now, when I was 34 my body started to drain a pus-like substance from my head. It started after I scratched an itch on my head. Skin peeled off in my fingernail and I felt my scalp getting wet. The stuff was clear (to my relief), not blood, so I was concerned not alarmed. For the next few weeks my skin peeled and leaked puss. At the time, I thought it might be a severe case of acne. It took a couple of years of lancing and draining puss until my head started cracking. The first crack was rather loud and I saw stars. Over the last 12 years I have been dealing with cracking and pop sounds from my head and neck when I shake my head. My theory after all this time: Over the first 34 years of my life, I have had psoriasis. This has caused huge lesions made from of the oils and dead skin that could not be secreted normally from my body. This stuff solidified hard under my skin and is in the process of coming out. I have talked to a couple of doctors who did not agree, so this is just my theory.

I get all of those symptoms, I want to pull my teeth out at times. Look up any information you can on Electrical Hypersensitivity and consider if that fits your particular symptoms? Does it come and go depending upon what you are doing? Consider your surroundings when it is at its worse. I have that and chemical sensitivity brought on by a combination of candida infection and being given an excessive amount of steroids. Its a serious problem and hard to get a diagnosis, good luck.

When we get knots in our muscles, toxins accumulate. That is partly contributing to that crunching sound.
If you do seek help via massage - self or otherwise - to facilitate relief, those toxins will be released and running through your body.
Therefore, it is imperative you flush the toxins by drinking tons of water afterward. Adding lemon makes the flushing process even more effective. Coconut water...even better, due to the high concentration of electrolytes, which can sometimes be flushed along with toxins

I can definitely relate to this one. My popping/sizzling noises started in 2007 when I was 22. I don't even have to turn my head to hear it. I can be just laying in bed and my husband can sometimes hear it too. It never really got better or worse... no pain... just annoying, you know? A few months ago, I noticed it getting louder. The quiet sizzling noise is now accompanied by clicking and low popping sounds. Once in a while I will get a random "zap" of what feels like electricity that shoots from the back of my neck up into my head. Even more troublesome - just a few weeks ago I started to get weakness, numbness, tingling and pain in my hands and feet. It's been gradually getting worse. Going to the doctor this week. Wish me luck! Multiple Sclerosis runs in my family....... I pray that's not the diagnosis for me. :( I'll keep ya'll posted if I find out the source of the sizzling neck noise.

Thanks for writing. I am praying for you. What concerns me most is how young you are. I hope you are cured soon. My problem probably started when I was about 13. The first symptom was mild acne. Then the popping and clicking noises started and ended within about 6 months. After that I had very bad dandruff. The dandruff went away when I was about 16 and had mild cases of acne till I was 34. I am 50 now and the stuff from the acne is almost gone. My skin is better now and looks better now than it has in 30 years. I hope and pray your problem is not neurological. I know that mine is not and it makes me feel lucky and thankful to god every day

Hi all,
Just to give a brief note of my personal experience relating to this. It started a few years ago with recurring dull ache in my face, behind my left eye which I always thought was a sinus infection. I went to see an ENT, who did an MRI of my face and put a scope up my nose and didn't find anything. I also saw an eye doctor and a neurologist and no-one had any suggestions. I got fed up of going to doctors and just left it.
About 4 months ago, I slept funny one night and woke up with a stiff/sore neck, and a few days later was in the gym and got a sharp shooting pain in my left shoulder. Assuming it was a mild sprain, I just left it to see if it would go away in 6-8weeks (standard healing time for sprains). I also get the crackling sound in my neck like poprocks, although the crackling sound sometimes sounds like it is coming from my sinuses. There was no improvement in my neck or shoulder so two weeks ago I went to see a physio. Apparently my posture is terrible (I work in IT) and my shoulders hunch forward when I sit and my neck tilts forwards as well, meaning my shoulder/neck weren't able to heal. I asked her if it could also cause headaches, and here's the kicker - apparently the referred tension in my neck/shoulder can feel like "a swelling behind the eye", which is exactly what I've had for years. I also asked her about the crackling noise, and this is a common symptom of tension in the back and neck caused by bad posture / bad sitting position in the office. I got a deep neck massage and some exercises to do and have corrected my sitting position, and this has helped a lot. The pain is still there but is slowly getting better, and the crackling is still there but much less. During the neck massage, I had all sorts of strange popping sensations in my sinuses/ears (like when landing in an aeroplane) so the two are clearly linked.
Good luck all, I hope that helps someone! Have your posture checked by a professional (a lot of companies, especially big ones, will have someone internally that does this, otherwise you can ask a colleague to take lots of photos of you sat at your desk and take them with you when you see a physio), and try to be aware of things like sitting at a funny angle on the sofa while you play on your iPad, or bend your head quite far forwards when reading a book.
All the best, Matt

Hello again, all. Just updating you... I went to the doctor a couple of times now. They can't pinpoint what the crackling noise is (so frustrating!!!). However, they said my blood pressure is too high, and my back and neck muscles are way too tense. I told him I thought that was unrelated, but he diagnosed me with severe anxiety and panic disorder. I started Zoloft and a muscle relaxer. A few days into it, I noticed the sounds have decreased, and I'm not consumed with worry about it anymore. The pins and needles in my hands and feet are completely gone. Maybe it's just the meds fooling my mind, but I feel so much better. Still waiting for the results of my blood work... so we shall see.

This sound is likely caused by weakness of the deep intervertebral muscles. You see when they weaken you tend to use the larger muscles that turn the head on the neck rather then turning each bone in the neck individually so that it moves in the normal plane of motion. i.e. the neck turns the head follows and then the bones move in each of their intended joint planes. Strengthening deep intervertebral and capital flexors and extensors for a few months will make that sound go away.

I didnt explain that really well... So what happens is you have the big muscles in your neck that connect from your collarbones and shoulders to your head. you also have a lot of little bitty muscles that connect from one little bone to another little bone in your neck...Doing a lot of computer work, having a whiplash, or just studying a lot makes you lean forward and get your head out in front of your body. So you start getting lazy and use the big neck muscles that attach from the shoulders to the skull to turn your head. Then you don't use the little muscles that turn each little bone cause they are smaller and weaker. What happens is then your big muscles basically twist your head and the little neck bones follow but they don't do it very precisely so that noise you hear are the joints in each of the neck bones grinding cause they are not moving in the correct plane of motion. it is called crepitus.
Also, the anxiety can be triggered by dysfunction of the upper cervical spine... it causes a fight or flight reaction in some people because of the sympathetic connection to the upper cervical spine through the superior cervical ganglion.
Granted if you have some reason for your anxiety that is your likely cause of neck tightness and needs to be addressed with an appropriate counselor of some sort. People hold there stress in their neck, likely why the zoloft is helping.
See your physical therapist to learn how to strengthen the deep neck muscles appropriately it's not a matter of tying a rubber band on your head they are very precise delicate movements and have to be done correctly and daily for a few months in order to get the right results and eliminate the noise you are hearing. Oh and the tingling is probably caused by the neck muscles called scalenes pinching the brachial plexus ... that is common with neck tightness. If you take care of it you can prevent disc or arthritic problems in your future.

..in reply to the above, ditto,my teeth feel really sensative like suddenly the enamel isnt protecting me from sensitivity.
Does the 'hinge' at the point where the upper and lower jaw are joined feel painful when you move your jaw to eat, yawn etc.?.I thought it was acute sinutitus but ,after two weeks of two types of anti-bots. although it relieved the pressure, I feel I still have this problem.
