Sugar alcohols are a form carbohydrates that are put in the so called “sugar-free” products.
You didn’t say what your grandson suffers from, so it is impossible to say if sugar alcohols would hurt him. I suppose it won’t if given in reasonable amounts.
Sugar alcohols do contain calories but less that regular sugars. It takes little or no insulin for sugar alcohols to be metabolized and they are converted into glucose slowly and they raise blood levels slightly, there is no sudden increase.
The negative side effects of sugar alcohols are linked to excessive amounts. They may cause diarrhea and bloating and also have laxative effects. They rise blood sugar only when taken in the high amounts.
