I had this pain for about 4 or 5 months. At first the pain was just minimal but gradually it got worse. I went to my physician and all he did was send me for X-ray which did not show anything. Finally I said this was enough so then I went to my chiropractor and as soon as I was on his table and he placed his hands on my lower back, he immediately knew what is was. I think he said it was a stuck rib.
He did some manipulation and then pressed with his thumb ( I believe as I couldn't see) for a few minutes on the ribs I would imagine. Although it hurt while he was doing it, he then advised me the rib was back in place.
It took about 4 weeks for the pain to finally go away. I went back to the chiropractor just to check and sure enough the rib was still in the right place.

I highly recommend seeing a chiropractor...this is a very common issue. I've experienced it myself, as has my girlfriend. Usually these feelings of pain or discomfort are due to muscle pain/discomfort around the outside of the floating ribs. They can "popped" in by a chiropractor pretty easily...or you can try doing it yourself if you can relax your body enough for your muscles to relax (so the floating ribs can pop in). I have used a technique where I use the same hand for the same side I am having an issue (right hand for right side), with the palm of my hand down touching my back (bare skin), with my fingers pointing toward my butt. Using your fingertips, pulling them...using as much strength as you feel you can use, up the side of your back that has the issue (right hand right side, left hand left side) and sort of turn your body the opposite direction AWAY from where the discomfort is, while pulling (with pressure) your finger tips up and over the skin and muscles above the ribs. If you can relax your muscles enough, this will cause the floating ribs to "pop in".

My aunt practiced physical therapy for years. She said that if you have a rib pop out of place, and you don't let it sit out of place for a while, you can try laying on the floor with a tennis ball between you and the floor on the area where the rib is out. It will hurt a bit, but it will apply enough concentrated pressure to put the rib back in. You may need to move a little to have the tennis ball push in the right direction, but try it.

My pain has been hapening for 14 years now. always in the rib cage but sometimes at the top and bottom and other times on both sides at the bottom. when its happening i cant breathe it hurts that much. no dr has ever helped me - when i am in pain they just stop the pain, when its not hurting there is nothing to find out. the pain used to come for a day and then not come back for months - even years, now it comes and hangs around for weeks.

I am now almost 41, and have had this off and on since I was 24 years old. I have been told it is a floating rib and once it pops loose it doesn't really ever go back. The pain is not something I like but will have to live with. Holding the bottom of the rib cage, or stretching it out will take the pain away when it happens.

i am 45, never had any back problems. three years ago shoving snow, i fell on a vertical piece of snow, on my right back side, lower. took the air right out of me. went to the doctor, said you broke your floating rib, it well heal on its own. last year went to see him, said it still hurts, took x-ray. said it was fine, saw nothing in the x-ray. still to this day i can't sleep through the night. starting to get worst, try to sleep on the sides, but still takes away my breath and the pain is getting INTENSE!! never been to bone cracker, but after reading these concerns of other people, maybe its time to try.

When I bend over (like when tying shoes) sometimes my ribs feel like they cross. It's not really painful, but uncomfortable. When I straighten up, they slowly go back into place. It's always a little scary that a rib will crack when this happens.

I have had what I now think is floating rib pain. I can feel it move out of place and back into place if I press it gently. It doesn't hurt when pressed but when I breathe deeply, yawn cough etc. I had food poisoning and malaria a couple of months ago and someone said maybe I damaged the rib vomiting. It is very uncomfortable and doesn't seem to improve with anti inflamatories.

Ive had this problem for about two years now too. When I lean forward the rest of my ribs move but one some times two (one on each side) stay in the same place, which is painful and sometimes means the ribs are going under the ones on top. It happens more often in my left than my right but hurt more when it happens in my right. I don't see the point in going to the doctors about this because I know they will just nod then send me away because its not hurting me enough to be a majour problem. Sometimes they also hurt when I do exercise.

I'm 18 years old and have been experiencing very similar problems with my ribs. My right three ribs have been giving me pain since I was fourteen but just recently the pain has been becoming much more frequent. Now on my right side my ribs can easily be popped or pushed out of place with minimal effort, and my left side has begun to show similar habits. I feel extreme pressure some days where it feels like my breathing is effected. Other surges are just a usual mild discomfort. Im starting to get worried, i just had passed this off as "floating ribs" and figured it wasn't too serious but now that it seems to be spreading im not so sure.

Hi, Im a 20 year old college student and I have always had scoliosis. I have an S curve in my back which causes my last left rib to detach and shoots pain up my spine. It usualy makes my whole side hurt and I would rather stay in bed. The only way to make it better is to have the Doc. pop it back into place, as far as I know. I also found out that regular streching helps me to have longer time spans between having a rib out. If any one has suggestions or is just in the same boat I would be thrilled to hear about it. Im terrified because it just keeps getting worse and I have no idea what it will be like in 30 years. good luck to everyone and thanks.
